   Having never been, I took a bit of a gamble and booked a table for Kelli’s birthday at L’Ardoise. She is still smiling the next day. We felt welcomed immediately, the waiter knew the menu intimately, the food was wonderful and even though the small dining room and bar were completely full, we had no trouble feeling like we were by ourselves. How does that happen? We will be back for sure.

   Second time within a few weeks and it was again a good experience. The food and service are good, the staff is friendly and polite. Prices are reasonable.

   We ordered escargot and I was expecting the traditional dish, but instead there were 2 escargots, each in a potato cup. Still good but totally unexpected! Rack of lamb was cooked to perfection and so was the coq au vin.

   Basically, the same great food and ambiance. But like many restaurants, it has cut back on little things that made it extra special (charging for bread that used to be free and eliminating a free after dinner glass of sweet wine).

   Great little gem in the heart of San Francisco. Country French flare with a neighbour feel to it. Make reservations due to its popularity.
