Laporta's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The ambiance is extremely dated without being hip. On a Saturday night at 8, there's an old man playing cello, another old man playing piano, and a middle-aged man crooning old-man classics like "Lady from Ipanema." Yet, they don't play up the oldster them very well. The cocktail menu, which is small, does not contain a single classic. Instead, there are poorly thought-out and poorly-made variants on the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, margarita, etc. The service is slow. The food is ordinary. The wine is by-the-glass and not very good. The pricing isn't over-the-top and, if you happen to be staying at that hotel or can't get the mile or so to the walkable part of Old Town for some reason, it's not a terrible experience. But, with so many great options so close, there's no other good reason to eat at Laporta's.
We were there for Valentines day they had a jazz band that was really good ]. Our seating was a little close to the band so it was hard to talk and enjoy the food. The food was good. I had the hanger steak and macaroni and cheese very tasty. Overall great time and ambiance.
Excellent atmosphere for brunch meal with great piano playing in the background. Service and decorum superb. Wait staff was very friendly and accommodating when we had to postpone our reservation for an hour. I recommend LaPorta as a great spot for casual and evening dining.
Enjoyed a nice dinner with friends who I see once per year; the venue was very nice provided a menu varied enough and the service was attentive. I was concerned about the jazz duo being located in the dining room, but it was not an issue from a noise perspective and provided a delightful ambiance. I am not a desert person, but recommend not missing one of the homemade creations. I was impressed by the few bites I tried. Also the salad entrees are large.
We wish our schedules allowed us to eat at Laporta's more frequently. Not only is the food always tasty and well presented, but we LOVE the live music available seven days a week. Our latest visit was last Friday and we heard the great Satin Doll Trio. Thank you to the owners, who recognize the value of live--not taped--music as part of the dining experience. Our next visit will be brunch!
My friend and I came to LaPorta's to celebrate his 50th birthday and we were absolutely happy with everything. Our waiter, Luis C. was warm, friendly, and attentive the entire evening which made our visit an enjoyable event. The atmosphere and music really set the tone for the evening we will definitely be back again. Great place for date night!!
I was pleasantly surprised that it was still Restaurant week. Unlike some Restaurant week participants the full menu was available so selection wasn't limited. We both had the mesclun salad. I had seafood crepes and my date had the tilapia fillet. The piano music by Antonio James was delightful mixing jazz standards with a little Chopin. We both took our deserts to go, mine was the tiramisu and traveled well. I had it with dinner the following evening.
Had the Cod this evening as my restaurant week entree. It was very tasty. The honey glaze was sweet but not overpowering. The fish was soft and flaky. I will say that it had a little too much batter and may have been left to fry for 30 secs too long because the crust was a bit barker and harder than I would have wanted, but overall it was very tasty. The carrot cake dessert was warmed in the oven prior to being served which made it softer and more moist than it already was. Served with some whipped cream and berries on the side. It was excellent.
I have eaten here several times. The food is good, consistent, but not to die for. The special bottle of wine with two entrees is what keeps me coming back. Great price. Service is usually good, but the last time I ate here it was very slow. If you want to hear live music you must sit very close to front, so soft you cannot hear toward back of room.
Excellent food and service! My girlfriend and I went because of a restaurant week special that many local restaurants were offering. The soup of the day was a delicious vegetable and turkey soup that left us wanting more. I had the salmon filet and she had the salmon fettuccine, both of which were cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. Lots of great dessert options too, particularly the strawberry fleuret and chocolate mousse cake. The service was brilliant, all our dishes came out in very timely fashion, drink refills were always quick, and the wait staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. The country music didn’t bother me but contrasted with the general ambiance unusually, and the music level started off a little loud but was quickly corrected by the waiter. I will absolutely go back.
Food and service were good and we enjoyed our meals. Was disappointing that because we celebrate a birthday during restaurant week each year that we can’t use the birthday gift we sign up for. I’m not sure why $19 off isn’t just $19 off, regardless of if being a special meal deal. It’s still $19. That leaves a sour taste on an-otherwise enjoyable occasion.
The Laporta' s family and staff are always consistent with delicious food choices, several genuine light Italian dishes and desserts, generous portions and many homemade desserts. Service is very professional and respectful. Loved our restaurant week three course meal, will return soon.
I thought the food was just ok. I was actually kind of disappointed in this place after reading the reviews. The prices were high given what we got and the overall experience. I am use to dining in DC, LA you name it and paying top $$, but for this I just was not impressed.
We made the mistake of going to one of our favorite restaurants during restaurant week. It is a lovely venue but this time, it was too crowded and we were disappointed with the food. The service was good but she was really crazy busy. We will probably go back but never again during restaurant week or other big events....
Food was delicious! However, the service could have been a little better, asked for lemons for my water, never got them, the waiter also did not come and fill my water glass, it was empty for most of the dinner, he also brought our dinner then never came back to ask how things were, if he would have come back I could have asked for a refill but he didn’t until we had finished eating
This was my second trip to LaPorta's and I'm thinking hard about returning for a schedule dinning on the 14 of February. My B-B-Q steak was un-eatable, even at a request for med/rear. The drinks were excellect and my date enjoyed the pork chop. The deserts were subpar compare to the menu discription. Menu way not clear on all additional charge associated with restaurant week, which provided a small rise in seeing two iteam charged with an additional $5.00 fee. Just try to ensure clearity and it will reduce the amount of concerns about the bill. The waiter seem confuse on serving the meal and then taking over 45 minutes to remember that I had asked for our desearts and the bill. The Jazz smooth out the evening and the young lady that welcome us and took our coats whas outstanding. Great smile.Overall I really do like this eatery, however if I return on the 14th and the concerns qare still there. This will be the last time I or friends will patronize LaPorta's.
Went here on a Friday evening with family and kids, but seemed like mostly a date night spot. The food was pretty good. I had a salad, and the dressing was very good. The salad portion was large, the kids had ravioli, and got 5 or 6. This was enough for them, but maybe not enough for an adult. They did get theirs without the mushrooms though. The dessert was the best part. Probably the best chocolate mousse cake I've had. The live jazz music was very nice.
My wife and I were looking for a nice dinner spot with live music. The jazz trio playing was very good and we were surprised that there was no "music charge" because the band was so good. Service was excellent from our waiter Frank. Food was also excellent. We will be coming back again and again.
I have been dining at LaPorta's for many years, and they never disappoint. Their staff is friendly without being overbearing and the food is consistent and top notch. We celebrated a friend's "significant" birthday and she was delighted to be at LaPorta's with the LaPorta family. Phil, Mary, Margaret, Ralph and Douglas are gems in Alexandria's challenging restaurant scene. Their live jazz nights are a lovely bonus. There is a reason LaPorta's has withstood the test of time. Try it - you won't be disappointed!
