One of the best Thai food in the city and with relaxing ambience. Will definitely come back!
It was nice to find a reasonably priced, modern/hip option in the neighborhood for a post-holiday shopping dinner with my mom. We liked the option and then the presentation of choosing 3 starters to share and the portions were plentiful - we just did the starters and shared a curry. I also liked that they had a nice selection of cocktails and martinis as well as beer on tap.
The bathrooms were the most disgusting bathrooms I have ever seen. They are a health hazard.
My date no like
The food was delicious but the service was horrible. They came over to the table only twice and never asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks, which the drinks took a long time to come out as it was. Our waitress was standing behind the bar on her phone so it’s not like they were busy. It was also SO hot inside. They should have had the air conditioning on because it was much too warm for comfort. Just disappointing because the food was very well done.
Visiting after nearly 8 years, I found that the food, service and restaurant in general had maintained its high standards. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was superb and being a Sunday it was not too noisy nor crowded. Well worth a revisit - hopefully sooner than 8 years...
The food was so good ! It was our second visit to Lantern Thai and I had the whole fried fish with the triple sauce. I was 'licking my fingers' good! Our appetizers were delicious as well. The only complaint we had was the warm temp in the restaurant. We were seated near the kitchen area and had to request for the large fan as it was getting hot in our area. The Staff accommodated our request and we enjoyed our food.
The waiters demanded more tip. In all my experiences with going out to eat I thought giving tip was optional and also it was supposed to be given by free will not forced
Everything was delicious and great
Food was only ok. Unfortunately not the best Thai food we had, the curry was very creamy and a lot of coconut cream so it tasted only as it was a big coconut cream thing. Service was very friendly
Service was pathetic. The seever was extremely rude when we asked him if he could alter a dish based on preference. He constantly made faces whenever we asked about a dish and at one point he even said “i dont know what to tell you. Make your own decision and let me know. I cannot help you”
Food did not cover up for the service either. Pad kee mao was stale, rice and dumplings seemed like they were cooked a day before, heated up and served. I will never come back.
we went on mother's day and it was lovely. they offered a free drink to mothers, which was very sweet. it was cozy and comfortable.
Good neighborhood place
I usually enjoy Thai places and had booked this for a birthday gathering. At first it looked like they didn't know we had a reservation, but were easily able to seat us.
Their menu online was somewhat different to their actual menu, and unfortunately this meant it didn't have the item my friend really wanted.
We ordered some spring rolls while waiting for the rest of our group, and they weren't very tasty unfortunately.
We ended up leaving after paying for the spring rolls and going elsewhere.
There was an extremely long hair wrapped around my pad Thai noodles when I lifted up my fork. I’m happy I noticed before I ate it! They also now have a B health rating. I did not have a good experience here and will probably not be going back for a while unless they raise their health standards.
The restaurant was freezing cold, we were the only table there and the service was incredibly slow. When the food came out it was cold. Overall terrible experience.
Service was atrocious. Throughout the entire night too.
I had a red curry which was very good, but a lot of sauce compared to chicken. My wife had shrimp pad Thai which she says was good.
Nice place. Food was good not amazing. We had appetizer tasting platter that was good. Drinks were ok- eg i ordered the Siam Sunray which was supposed to have spicy habanero syrup but it wasn’t spicy at all even when I told them this and ordered a 2nd one - it was the same. I had shrimp over vermicelli in a clay pot - only had 4 medium sized shrimp! And not much sauce or flavor. Everyone else’s dishes were good though!
Good food, great service. I’m glad we have Lantern in our neighborhood
Only too loud. Food was good and the ambience was nice as well
We come to NYC once a year and always eat here. Live shrimp clay pot for dinner. Very reasonable for city prices.
The staff was very nice and the entire group really enjoyed their meals. I'll definitely be back.
Great Thai food at a good price! Ambience is amazing
Very good time and great food!! I will definitely go back!
Food was mediocre but then my husband and I both got sick when we got home. Decor was fine, but bathroom situation was terrible. Out of order, smelled terrible and leaking ceiling with a dirty mop in there. Had to walk by the trash to even get to bathroom. If I had went in the beginning of my meal I would have left.
It was a hot hazy humid day and we literally had to beg for them to shut front doors and put on air conditioners. We then had to ask for knives. They only put out forks. They bring me one. Not thinking other guest would want one also. The food WAS good. I’ve been there many times before. They just need to be more aware of guests needs.
My friend (of almost 40 years) and I each drove 2 hours from opposite directions to meet, eat and enjoy Chapel Hill for a couple of days. Lantern was the perfect dinner! We had several appetizers as dinner and got to sample many different flavors and creations. The okra was especially good! Will definitely be back some day.
Normally it’s a quite peaceful place but romantic sophisticated place to dine and have good food in a peaceful atmosphere, last night it was overrun by a large family with rambunctious children which made it much louder and chaotic Tha t normally is, my friend Shapiro a chair back with 3 kids was getting constantly pushed and disturbed so not so sure it was a positive experience for her the food and service can be pretty much relied on
Delicious meal served promptly!
It’s was good. A nice little spot for the area.
They didn’t have air conditioning on so it was a bit hot. The sludge no doors were open and there was a bit of a breeze.
Good portion, tasty food...
We were sat near a smelly tub of dirty dishes and had to change seats. Also, they forgot to bring us our drinks until halfway through the meal. But the food was good.
Watch your bottom line. Unbeknownst to most, gratuity is added to bill and an additional tip is often unnecessary.
I believe that it is difficult in NYC to find a Thai restaurant that has a pleasant atmosphere, solid staples, casual and friendly service, and all the while at affordable prices. Given the prices of Lantern's food, I was very surprised how good the food is. While I wouldn't recommend Lantern for a date-spot per se, for as casual it is, the ambience is quite nice, with very lovely decor, a full bar, and very nice staff. And, again, the food is top-notch; there are some of the highest rated Thai restaurants in NYC that may have more innovative or novel Thai dishes, and perhaps some more "authentic" Thai restaurants that may do slightly better; but in neither of these cases would you get the value and overall good experience we had at Lantern. I would highly recommend Lantern!
Mixed bag. My steamed Ginger fish was a large portion and the fish seemed fresh, but it tasted like it just had some sautéed ginger on top. No flavor development. Definitely not worth $26.The shrimp and mango salad was excellent. The jumbo shrimp and seafood with asparagus and pineapple was decent. I think our server was brand new, when I asked if they had bourbon, she didn’t know what bourbon was. The space is nice, although it seemed like half of the lanterns were not lit. And even though I told them we had a reservation, they never told open table that we had arrived.
Lots of menu options for us vegetarians! My girlfriend and I both enjoyed the food, which was flavorful and fresh. They weren't especially busy, so the service was prompt and attentive! The waitstaff were very helpful in unboxing the birthday cake we'd brought and lighting the candles (and quick to the rescue when I accidentally knocked over my water glass!)
Delicious Food at a great price! The Drunken Noodles with Shrimp was spicy & tasty, especially with a Thai Tea!
