Nestled in the heart of Ashtown Village, Dublin 15, overlooking the Royal Canal, The Lock Keeper can be found at Lock #10. Steeped in heritage, this double lock was constructed c.1792. With quality stonework and attractive sloping edges Lock 10 is one of 46 along the Royal Canal and continues to be a testament to the skill of the craftsmen involved. Our bar is adjacent to the Lock Keepers House, a post that became obsolete in 1961 when the canal was closed to traffic the previous year. The Royal Canal, which runs from the River Liffey to the River Shannon and stretches a distance of 145km, was originally built for freight and passenger transportation with the last working barges ceasing to operate in 1951.Now beautifully maintained by Irish Waterways, you are welcome to visit The Lock Keeper by canoeing, walking or cycling from Dublin City Centre. Equally idyllic, why not catch a train from Connolly with a short 6 minute journey bringing you to our

The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café became a famous Dublin landmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Named after the Yeats poem and in honour of its winding staircase, it is overlooking the river Liffey, with an iconic view of the Ha'penny bridge. As a popular meeting place for writers, musicians and artists, it was a well known hub for debate and creativity with many poems written, novels penned and movies shot within its walls. In 2006, Elaine Murphy brought this much-loved spot back to life as a restaurant, championing seasonal, Irish produce. The bookshop, located on the ground floor, was retained, as were many of the old bookshelves, photos and memories. The room retains its timeless charm with stripped wood tables and floors, and Bentwood café chairs. The view remains as quintessentially Dublin as ever. The food is good, old-fashioned home cooking, with produce sourced from artisans within the island. Drink sare local and international craft beers & wines from stellar producers.

We had a wonderful meal, availing of the very attractive 5euro corkage on Mondays, and the excellent value Express Menu. The name is confusing because we did not feel " expressed" along but served in a comfortable, timely manner. We were greeted warmly and our request for 2 chairs rather than banquette seating was facilitated. All the staff were friendly, courteous and attentive. The Smoked Mackeral Salad was very tasty, and generous. The Tail End Fillet was delicious and cooked as requested. Also the pepper sauce was tasty and nice consistency. The accompanying French fries were super! Finally we both had the rum bread and butter pudding. Delish! We had a wonderful evening in a beautiful building.

I had the 10oz steak and my partner had the peri peri chicken dish. Both were lovely. You get complimentary garlic bread to start and a complimentary dessert of chocolate profiteroles with a lovely warm chocolate sauce. Staff were very friendly and accommodated my partner with the downstairs bathroom when they noticed she is heavily pregnant without us having to ask. Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff , very good value for money will definitely return and would recommend.

It is simply the best Italian restaurant in town. Not wonder why it is difficult to book a table. Starters were perfect, mains even better and the atmosphere was unreal. Great staff, great chefs. 10 out of 10 and will come back as many time as possible. Was the best choice to celebrate my birthday. Special thanks to Elenice, she made my night even more special.
