Entering the Saloon, a family owned restaurant since it opened in 1967 is a bit like stepping into Philadelphia's past. Dark oak paneling, shiny brass and authentic local antiques create a warm congenial and casual atmosphere. The choice of two comfortable dining rooms each with its own vintage bars make dining and conversation a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Both bars feature a delicious and moderately priced food menu. The menu is Italian with seafood specials such as grilled octopus and dover sole. Saloon steaks and veal chops are legendary. Many prefer a plate of fried long hot peppers to compliment the steaks. All desserts and gelatos are made on the premises daily. The Saloon is a Philadelphia neighborhood bar and restaurant with a national reputation. And the parking is FREE!

What an amazing meal! Everything was fantastic, freshly made and tremendously prepared! We started with the seasonal cheese platter (strawberries, goat cheese and balsamic drizzle)- very tasty. Next I had the mushroom soup which was flavorful and simply delicious. Entrees included the vegan option for my wife (it came beautifully displayed and ready to be mixed together. Super flavors all blended together, although the jalapeños were quite spicy. I chose the chicken with Gnocchi. It always great, the sauce was tasty and the chicken was perfect, but the highlight was the gnocchi. They were cooked well, but then seared on a griddle to be amazingly crispy. I’ve never had them that way but will definitely be trying to make that at home. The carrot cake with the ice cream was just perfect.

A surprising find for us as we were new to the city and to this restaurant. Service was good and the food was excellent with nice sized portions. The pork chop was very tasty though a slight bit fatty, not enough to ruin the meal. The salmon with sticky rice was, on the other hand, flawless. It tasted great. Unfortunately, we had an appointment to keep so we missed dessert, but we hope to be back again.

What a perfect way to celebrate a birthday. We sat at a window seat, watching the wonderful parade of people and pooches pass by, ate a wonderful lunch. The place has a great buzz, the staff is attentive, the food is delicious. (I really wonder, however, why such an upscale restaurant serves canned tuna in its Nicoise salad. "Canned tuna from Italy," the waitress said apologetically, but still. In any case, it was a great experience, to be repeatedly as soon as possible.
