Great food, great service, and great friendly people...we will return next year
We visited this charming restaurant for our anniversary and had a wonderful experience. The food was excellent— creative and delicious; service was attentive. We loved the duck and the halibut. Flourless chocolate cake was amazing!
One doesn't really come here just to "get something to eat." You come here to celebrate something special, in our case, the last night of a great 3 day getaway which was my wife's first time in Mammoth. Having previously stayed at Tamarack Lodge some years ago on Sierra Club cross-country ski trips, I was looking forward to re-visiting the Lakefront Restaurant with my wife, and the experience did not disappoint. Here, you don't just get a bowl of soup - you get a wonderfully unique round ceramic "frame" for the puree which is poured tableside and which was delicious. Main courses are beautifully presented and showcase unique preparations and flavors (I had the Elk Strip steak, prepared rare at chef's suggestion with charred squash and risotto, rather than the potatoes one might expect. The portions seem small by American standards, but not by European: we enjoyed and finished every morsel on our plates, and yet felt totally satisfied. One should not judge value based upon the weight of your "doggie bag" of leftovers. Dessert was incredible: a passion fruit and blood orange tart that exhibited flavors that I've never experienced before.
Speaking of value, prices here are high, but I suppose within fine dining standards. I typically order a glass of wine with my meals, and the wine list at this small restaurant is impressively extensive with sommelier recommendations in all categories. Overall, a memorable meal.
Overall, I’m not sure that I’d return. The menu was small and my entree, halibut, didn’t seem cooked completely. Service was also completely slow. We had to request Beltran because we were starving. The waitress said we could get it once we placed our orders. What?????
My daughter had the kids steak filet. That was amazing.
Tamarack is a classic mountain lodge with a lot of wood, stone, history and ambiance. Service is great however, the food was not as good as I remember it 10+ years ago. Good but not great.
The food was outstanding. Probably the freshest and tastiest arugula salad we have ever had (and we are from the Bay Area)! The dishes were all inventive with creative combinations and artistic plating. The dining room is small, intimate and romantic, but there were larger parties and families as well. All blended together beautifully in this charming mountain lodge environment.
Beautiful location, had been here many times in the past with wonderful experiences, but no substitutions now and very very pricey. Will not be back.
We've been to the Lakefront restaurant several times and this time we were very disappointed. The food was mediocre. One would expect an excellent meal at the prices they charge. It's a cozy setting and the wait staff is outstanding. I had the filet which was just average - not very tender and no flavor. The elk was luke warm. When they said it was served rare they weren't kidding. I'd say it was more like seared and bloody. The ambience would have been perfect had there not been kids whining at the next table. Thank goodness the parents brought an ipad to keep them occupied. This meal was just mediocre for the price. Nothing special at all.
Lakefront Restaurant at the Tamarack Lodge is wonderful! Our dinner was delicious, particularly the Chef's soup du jour, but the main reason I felt a high price point is justified was their top-notch wait staff combined with that breathtaking view of the lake. A true culinary destination!
This is my favorite place in Mammoth. I love the ambiance. It is quiet and I feel like I'm on a little vacation even though I live in Mammoth. The salmon appetizer was absolutely amazing. Everything was good. I gave only four stars for value because there is no bread brought to the table, which felt a little, tiny bit stingy, given the prices. I did not order the prawns, but cannot imagine how they could have been worth $60. That seemed crazy, but, maybe I missed out on something amazing. I am pretty happy with the salmon appetizer, though.
We thought we had checked in as the gal in the Lobby, we waited 30 minutes, and I had to ask several times, and finally we were told to go back. There were 4 empty tables, I made a comment, she said she forgot about us. Several other people were seated ahead of us. I had made reservations with opentable.
The service was very slow, I asked for bread twice before it was served. The food was good, but I thought a little sparse for the price. I had the halibut, my friend had the gnocchi, and her daughter the soup. We had desserts, the creme brulee was disappointing, but the flourless choco cake one of the best I have ever had.
Very disorganized checkin, especially with so many empty tables. You might do with a quicker checkin and service, so you can have more customers. I doubt if I will come back for dinner.
The acme of fine dining in rustic elegance. Excellent food/wine/cocktails, superb and amiable service by authentic people, a lovely and beautiful setting, an unhurried and thoroughly pleasant experience that lingers happily in our thoughts long afterwards.
We have been coming to the Lakefront for many years and even with changes of ownership, we believe the quality and innovation of the food continues to get better. Flavors are well balanced and subtle. Cocktails are unique and served by the very friendly waitstaff.
There was a very loud group which wasn't particularly the restaurants fault but wasn't great for our experience. My date and I are both hard of hearing so it make talking super difficult. The busboy brought us bread, but no butter. My filet mignon was super chewy and not cooked to my requested style. The artichokes were chewy and not very good. The sauces weren't very good either. We were completely disappointed with our whole experience.
Excellent food and friendly service. Cocktails could be improved, however.
Finally! A beautiful meal in surreal lodge with stunning views! You won't regret this experience.
Very small portions, so if you have a guy with a big appetite this is not the place, however the food was presented well and very good.
I love this place. I guess they changed chef's and it is not quite as good but still a great place to visit and enjoy a great dinner. Drinks are really expensive!
I requested a table for six by the window on open table. I received a call back and was told that they could honor my request if we changed our reservation to 5:30. So we showed up at 5 for cocktails and no one was there to confirm our reservation or serve drinks at the bar. By the time the bartender got prepared it was time to be seated! We where seated at 5:30, but they said we couldn’t be seated at a window. My response was “why did you have us come in for an earlier reservation if you can’t accommodate my request.” He didn’t have much of a response other than we don’t seat six or more at windows. No other parties showed up for at least a half hour. We all felt tables could have been arranged to accommodate us.
One other annoyance was that short ribs where offered to those that came in after us. It was disturbing to some in the party that we where asked to come in early and we didn’t get the selection of entrees because the kitchen wasn’t prepared and we where denied seating promised on the phone!
food is great, the servers nice, but the organization is average to say the least. had to wait 40 minutes to be seated even with reservation.
Beautiful setting, great food & excellent & helpful waitstaff!
Loved the lounge area, fireplace!!!

The quality and the presentation of the food was superb. It stands equal to the finest restaurants that we have been through. The menu was limited but of high quality. The special of the day soup was excellent.
The service was very joyful and pleasant which made us feel very comfortable.
The chef, Reed Johnson, whom I met by chance in the corridor was a young humble man who deserves to be recognized as an excellent chef with a high level of expertise in crafting the food items on the menu.
We definitely would love to go back whenever the opportunity arises in the future.
After coming to dine at this place for more than 25 years - it fully stands up to it's reputation. Undoubtedly, by far the best eatery in Mammoth Lakes. Well, that doesn't say much - because the overall quality in Mammoth Lakes is not very high, but the Lakefront Restaurant is fantastic; in the midst of the dark winter or in the summer, where I love to come there for a romantic patio experience. It is a winner.
We love this restaurant! The food is delicious and the staff is the best. Highly recommend.
Amazing food, lovely staff, wide range of wines. Setting was small and quaint. A little bit noisy but that did not interfere with our wonderful birthday dinner!
Lakefront is the best restaurant in Mammoth. Their food is consistently good and cooked to perfection.
Food not that impressive for the price. Service slow... best thing was bread and soup. Not worth the price. I live here and will not recommend it.
Our favorite restaurant when in Mammoth Lakes. Food and service never disappoints.
Food is outstanding! There are only 10 tables, so reserve ahead or you won't get in. A small, quiet, yet casual atmosphere with 5 Star menu. We will definitely go again when we are in Mammoth.
Everything was super fantastic. Staff, food, ambiance...Excellent. Can’t say enough.
Good food, but pricey. Gnocchi was $42 entree. Menu is limited. Service was friendly but slow. Be prepared to spend $100 a person. We've been many times over the years, but this time it just didn't measure up to the price.
Cozy place with friendly staff and amazing food. We loved it
Based on the recent reviews for Lakefront, I was a little worried about making a reservation for five friends and me during our upcoming trip to Mammoth. We're so glad we returned.
Everything from the wonderful food, to excellent service and amazing setting (with lots of snow!) was perfect. The only downside was that we chose to come on a Thursday, when the pianist in the lounge is off. We'll be sure to come back on a weekend night next time.
I hosted our team and our clients for a lovely dinner after a long day of production, and was fortunate to get a last minute reservation for six. Everyone was enamored with the authentic, rustic atmosphere and one of our server's storytelling of hauntings and history of Tamarack Lodge. We ordered each of the starters for the table and all were delicious...foie gras with banana jam (unexpected pairings and delightful), smoked salmon, quail and apple. Many in our party chose the elk, one the filet mignon and I selected the beet and gnocchi. No one had anything but high praise for their dishes - truly delicious and conceptually well done.
The dining room is very small and intimate, which provides the opportunity for pristine service and a feeling of warm attentiveness. Our group likely got a bit loud with laughter towards the end of the meal but never felt out of place. While waiting for our Westin Monache shuttle, we enjoyed sinking into the chairs and couches in the fireplace lounge, so much so that we did not want to leave.
While not a true criticism, our only soft disappointment would be that the sole was not available, and the the dessert options did not appeal to us. Fortunately, we were all overly satiated and dessert was not a priority.
I look forward to someday returning to Lakefront and have already recommended to many!
The cuisine choices, the ambiance, the service, the view, absolutely equisite. What an unexpected treat to be served, and to share a dining room with others whom appreciate a level of service long reserved for formal dining at any great resort, or dining venue. This staff simply excels at making one feel spoiled in a rustic, wilderness atmosphere. Kelly was our waitress, and she simply stunned us with her comprehensive understanding of the chef's preparations, and presentations. Her service standards are amongst the best I have ever had the privilege of being served by.

The Lakefront restaurant is just one of our favorite spots in Mammoth. Even with the snow storm going on we always enjoy the food, service and location.
Our absolutely favorite restaurant in the entire Mammoth Lakes area. The service is impeccable. The food is always delicious. The best dish on the menu right now is the elk. Served perfectly on the rare side. Wanted to go back the next night and have it again. Beet salad served with a crisp bite and the soups have lovely complex flavors. Don't forget dessert, you won't be disappointed.
This is a 40 seat restaurant in a remote lodge next to Twin Lakes. The food flavors and presentation were superb and the service was very good. The portions, however, are not for a hungry person who spent the day on the slopes. You may still be hungry after appetizer, salad, main course and desert. About $500 for 4 people, including an $80 bottle of wine.
Amazing food and woods-lodge ambience. I had the pan-seared pheasant, and I’ve never had better. My wife had the beet gnocchi and loved it. Small, quaint, friendly.
