What Insiders Are Saying
Balthazar, you had a good 16-year run, but it’s time to step aside. Lafayette is now the quintessential French bistro of bustling downtown NYC.
Great Easter Sunday breakfast. Beautiful restaurant with wonderful ambience. The waiter was very friendly and accommodating. Delicious food. We visit this restaurant every time we go to NYC.
I’ve booked this place because my friend had birthday. It was one of our best New York City experiences
Wonderful Server, Wonderful Wine, Wonderful Oysters and Gem Salad! The ceilings are high and the lighting warm. Luxiorious yet humble in decor. Thank you!
While a little pricey the food is always amazing. Our server tended to our every need and was just lovely.
Muy rica la comida la ensalada de pollo es la mejor está súper deli !!
As a returning customer, I again found dinner at Lafayette a delight. It fulfilled my expectations completely. Our server was attentive and personable; other wait staff gentlemen who took care of us were very pleasant. The food was delicious, especially the duck. I tried a new champagne with hints of strawberry and enjoyed. In addition, the location of the restaurant is quite good for nearby activities. In our case, we were heading to the Public Theater. The Lafayette was the start of a remarkable evening.
Great food, lackadaisical service, consistently
Everything was great
This is definitely a "treat" spot as prices for small plates were a little higher than those to which I am accustomed. I would have tried more things but I was very happy and satisfied with Moules Frite. There were so many dishes going to tables around me that looked as delicious as ours! I will definitely be back.
Two times in a row struggle to get drinks out
Food was good. Service was okay. I had called the day prior to request and outdoor table and they ignored my request. We had to get up to get our own silverware after the food came. They brought our pastry basket after our meals rather than before because they forgot it. Would try again because it was good Food and ambiance but service isn’t.
The food was good however the service was very poor. Even after reminding the waiter more than once he still did not get what we asked for. It also took ages for them to get the bill or get the waiters attention to ask for one.
Too loud to talk at 9:15 but quieted a bit later in evening.
Enjoyed the team
Friendly and attentive service, excellent food with interesting options in a pretty room with a nice ambience.
Food was ok. Nothing special. Service was not very friendly. Nobody talked. Just delivered and took plates. Nice setting but did not meet my expectations.
Good French food, lovely servers, pleasant restaurant as always.
Coming back for the second time this week
Try the crouque madam to change your whole life
Honestly a little disappointed. I ordered a smoked salmon Benedict. Hollandaise and eggs were barely warm. I had to ask for salt & pepper. Espresso was excellent but we had to ask for tea spoons for the sugar. I know that if Chef Carmellini had been dining with me he would not have been pleased!
Thank you so much for the great birthday experience!!
top welcome, food & atmosphere !
very kind service !
lighting cool & smooth.
... a bit noisy... not that disturbing.
I really like French cuisine, and in Lafayette, I enjoyed all the four appetizers we ordered, but not so much the main dishes: black bass and vegetarian pasta.
Our server was attentive; he swiftly changed the piece of cheese we disliked, so I appreciated that. However, the delay in getting the main dishes, then our coffees was too long. We got impatient and restless. The restaurant was busy, but still we expected a faster service.
Lastly, in my reservation, I specifically asked for a table away from the restrooms, then we were seated next to the restrooms!, which was annoying. There were better locations in the restaurant. It just that I realized it after I settled into my seat.
Still, I do intend to go again, because overall the experience was positive.
Been here before. had a reservation for brunch, made request when we saw our table was in the well to be moved but they said th y couldn't. Had the omelet with tomato confit which was disappointing because the tomatoes were unpeeled and the tops still had some core in them, They were almost raw as opposed to confit.
Really good. I ordered the Benedict minus the Salmon since I’m a vegetarian, the portion was a little small. It would’ve been great if they added one more egg. Overall delicious food and pressed juices !
The food was very disappointing. Wouldn’t go again
The late winter/early spring menu is a bit drab, but the quality and preparations are excellent. For the first time, I noticed that it takes forever to get drinks once ordered, even when the restaurant was not busy.
A lovely restaurant food, ambiance and staff. Have been here many times doesn’t disappoint
We had a wonderful lunch at Lafayette. The location is beautiful, the food was delicious, and our waiter was great. The only issue was that the people at the front were slow, indifferent, and unapologetic when we had to wait 30 mins after our reservation time to be seated, which was such a shame because the rest of our dining experience was lovely.
Excellent food, service and ambience
We went to Lafayette for breakfast and the food was delicious. Both my daughter and her husband, who go there a lot, commented on the fact that the servers were slow and inexperienced. Otherwise it was great
Went for our anniversary. Everything was nicely done and we had a good time. Will return during the summer for another nice meal. Thanks
Both our dishes were very salty (Duck, Roasted Chicken)
We enjoyed everything, food, service and ambiance. Great for family dining on the weekends.
Food was good but the menu was too limited for me. Also, it was very pricey and not good enough for the expense compared to other restaurants i frequent.
Booked for 5 pm - only limited menu available. Be aware
Very good food, service and ambience. Would recommend to a friend.
We had a birthday dinner at Lafayette for our daughter and had a wonderful evening. Since, our group was large, 13 people, we had to have a family-style chef’s menu, which was absolutely delicious. Lots of food, wow!!! I forgot that 2 people are trying to eat gluten-free and didn’t mention that dietary restriction on the preference sheet, but 2 bowls of gluten free pasta showed up for them during the pasta/risotto course after my sister-in-law saw the printed menu for the night and asked about gluten! The wait staff was incredible - extremely attentive and very adept at maneuvering all the large platters and bowls on a fairly tight table and confined space. Even though we were told we would be at two parallel tables in the dining room because of our size, we were at one table, which we were very pleased about. It was cozy, but we all enjoyed being together at one table. I had never been to Lafayette Grand Cafe before and the vibe was definitely that of a cool French bistro. The pictures on the website don’t do it justice! Highly recommend!!! Btw, the cute macaron birthday “cake” with the large sparkler for the birthday girl was so fun!!!
First time at this outstanding restaurant. I cannot say enough about the attentive service. We were treated so good that I was sorry we were in a rush to get to the theater. My chicken dish was one of the best I’ve ever had. I cannot wait to return and have it again!
Food is great!
