What Insiders Are Saying
Balthazar, you had a good 16-year run, but it’s time to step aside. Lafayette is now the quintessential French bistro of bustling downtown NYC.
i visit lafayette often, love the ambience service and food. i feel at home and comfortable
Moukes didn’t taste fresh and I couldn’t eat them
2nd time there and food and service first rate. I wish they had a more extensive menu but overall its a great place.
Our server was super lovely! He was so cheerful and adorable. Our meal was good, the portions were smaller than anticipated, given the price, but it didn’t put much of a damper on our good time. Would love to return!
Great spot for brunch if your in the area. a little on the pricer end, but very nice and the food is great.
We liked the place, bright and sunny. However the food was ok, especially for the price. Good but nothing special. We had scrambled eggs, salmon with eggs and lemon pancakes- we all agree it’s was ok.
Service was a bit on a slow side but overall we had a good impression
Menu was most uninteresting. Perhaps my fault but took the suggestion of the waiter but Chardonnay was very disappointing. The brisket burger was uninspiring, but the service was terrific and everyone from the hostess to the waiter were attentive.
Very nice ambiance however the food is overpriced and the portions are tiny considering the cost.
We expected so much more.
Service was not good. Slow and sides we ordered with our meal arrived after we were done eating.
Hard to flag down the server. Food was good when it showed up, but not nearly as good as the sister restaurants which we think are great.
Perfect brunch spot.!
We had a great brunch. Service was spot on. Beautiful restaurant.
Fantastic night despite slow service. Although service was slow the food, wine and desert were all amazing. We were a happy table , in no rush so it worked. Maybe on a week night it wouldn't work but for Saturday night it was fine. They accommodated all our dietary restrictions perfectly. I would go back only when I'm not in a rush or expect typical NYC Express service.
We went to Lafayette for my father in-law's 70th birthday. Service was great and they accommodated that he wanted an apple pie for dessert instead of cake. Everything was wonderful!
Food and waiter were great. Very noisy
Great brunch. Beef Tartare excellent. Great service.
Food was just ok. Very disappointing.
Wonderful evening at Lafayette. Food + service + ambiance gave us a perfect evening to celebrate with friends.
This by far is one of the most fabulous restaurants, may be my favorite by this group. Pasta in a French style? Yes please!
Lafayette is our go to restaurant when we have tickets for a play at The Public Theater. Consistently excellent food and service and this night was no exception. Lisa, our Server, was warm and welcoming and offered helpful suggestions for food and libations. Lafayette will cater to special diets which is helpful as I’m on a Keto diet. I particularly enjoyed the Bistro steak
The food was very good. The service was OK but they really pack people in so it's not a great dining experience overall. Plus we were seated next to the host's desk which is the worst possible location as they have about 4 hosts behind the desk who are rushing about. I would consider going back as the food was good but I wouldn't stay if it was as crowded as it was for Saturday brunch.
The special of the day as a starter was a Camembert cheese in a puff pastry. As most starters were around $20 I understood that the price was $18. We took one to share to find out that the price was $80 which is a total rip off
It was good but clearly did not deserve such a price. Be careful with the prices that are not on the menu one could get huge and bad surprises
The food and service were impeccable. The escargot was melt in your mouth perfect. And my elderflower martini had a lovely citrus splash. My friend loved her steak and I thoroughly enjoyed my burger which was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. A special shoutout to the manager who checked up on us to make sure that everything was to our liking but wasn’t overly invasive. Thanks to all for a lovely experience.
The staff at Lafayette were so accommodating! We had fewer people than our reservation and they were so understanding. We will absolutely go back again and again! Coffee and pastries are superb!!!!
Always an amazing experience- great food and beautiful ambiance
Excellent as always. Oysters are always fresh and delicious. All entrees were great.
Beautiful space and delicious brunch and pastries. Spent a leisurely two hours there without being rushed out. Felt like I was in Europe where people value meal time and are allowed to linger and enjoy the experience.
Overall great restaurant for brunch. The only bad thing was the wait. I had booked the reservation for 1pm for last Sunday. For whatever reason, we weren't seated till 130. It would have been nice if they offered drinks on the house for making us wait 30min. Maybe the maitre d' needs to be taught how to handle a simple situation like this
Lafayette is a great, reliable spot for brunch/lunch. The food is a bit overpriced but it's a great location with good service and a fun ambiance.
We loved our server, and the service was wonderful. The birthday sparkler was a nice touch!
Amazing meal. Great set-up. Super service. Every plate better than the one before. Much better than Balthazar.
Excellent dinner. Shared superb escargots. We had the agnolotti and the rotisserie chicken. For dessert where’d the ice cream. Restaurant very Parisian. Highly tecommended
Food was average. Nothing mind blowing
We just felt the food wasn’t that good for the price. Not sure if prices have gone up or if it’s just been a while since we have been. Menu was very limited which is normal for a French bistro. We ordered a wine recommended by sommielier and it was quite sour even by Sancerre standards. So all and all not worth the cost.
Interesting menu and excellent service. Loved the beet salad and the mussels.
Pleasant lunch at Lafayette.
Nice bistro atmosphere.
Music was playing much too loud right over our head for a business lunch and it’s not necessary. Low is more atmospheric. For a business lunch I’m going to look for some place quieter.
Stunning ambiance, breathtaking flavors. The Sunchoke Agnolotti was impeccably balanced, rich and flavorful yet delicate. The Chicken Grand–Mère a hearty plating. Pomme-Frites are a must for the thin, crispy & lightly salted, fry lover. Roasted Cauliflower was also delicious, slight heat from the chili, and drop of sweet from the love I assume.
The wait for the table was too long. The service was not warm. My food had refrigerator taste. Maybe a bit over ambitious in getting the meals out quickly to turn over the tables.
In a word, disappointing. I took a 3 hour train ride to celebrate my son’s birthday. I wanted sparkling wine, you were out of most things. My husbands coffee was cold. My son’s Bloody Mary ( was supposed to be a bloody Marie) was watery. Food was fine but not worth the money. I wish I celebrated somewhere else. We will never be back.
We enjoyed Sunday brunch for our daughter’s 30th birthday. It was delicious and the service was equally as good.
