What Insiders Are Saying
Balthazar, you had a good 16-year run, but it’s time to step aside. Lafayette is now the quintessential French bistro of bustling downtown NYC.
It was very hot in the restaurant. We asked several times to check the temperature but nothing changed. We enjoyed the food but we were uncomfortable throughout the meal because it was so warm in the restaurant.
Waitress didn’t want to be at work. Took forever to even serve the wine. Had to ask her 2 times for everything. Restaurant had little a/c at 7pm
Been here many times in the past and something is different. People just don’t seem to care like they use to working there. Use to be a great place as little as /
Great quality food and outstanding service.
Sunday brunch was fab
Not bad. But not a dining experience. Wouldn’t go back. Not a New York experience restaurant. Oversized French cate that is maybe good for a first date or tourist.
I ordered a egg dish for brunch. It was very good, however to justify the $20 plus price there were a lot of eggs in the dish. I could not eat all those eggs. Service and ambience very good. Too expensive.
Great service and lunch. Unfortunately the noise level at the table next to us made it difficult to converse.
A friend and I decided to meet there for brunch given the large number of great reviews. We found the outdoor seating area pleasant and the food quite good. What was a bit of a shock were the prices - $12 for a juice, over $20 for most of the breakfast mains. I’m not sure if it’s just NY, but it seems like these prices were higher than they should’ve been. I definitely won’t be returning.
Great food and service! Would highly recommend. Thank you!
Had steak frites. Much better than Balthazar. Came late for a 10pm meal. Place very quiet & chill.
Lafayette has successfully made the transition from the 'hot' new place to a reliably excellent restaurant over the years. On our most recent visit, the Arctic Char special was particularly good, with a cucumber sauce. An outstanding summer dish. Service was attentive and friendly as always. The terrace is a joy in the summer and requests for outside tables are given appropriate attention. Lafayette never lets us down!
The service was slow - the waiters chatted on the side instead of serving the customers. The food was too salty. Quite a disappointment.
Lafayette offers a variety of delicious, well prepared dishes. Seating can be in either a charming dining room or pleasant outdoor area. Servers are efficient and knowledgeable.
Enjoyed the restaurant, but the service was not great. Our food came before our drinks for one and we had to flag the waiter down for everything. It was not that crowded either...
Everything was great. Love the coffee. All the croissant were fantastic. Good variety on the brunch menu.
Everything was great except they had no air conditioning in and it’s was almost 90 degrees outside.
We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Lafayette. Our dinners were delicious and the service was excellent!
The food and service was great...
However, the 3 women with their unruly kids one table over were really siatravting. The kids were longggg overdue and the women did NOT care. But what can you do? The staff handled it professionally.
Also it was 83 degrees outside and maybe 75 inside. I was sweating!!!
Dining outside on a perfect summer evening is always a pretty nice way to have a date, and the food and the service at Lafayette brings it all together very well.
Outstanding service and Amazing food.
Mediocre food at best but ambience and outdoor seating great. Excellent service.
I took my girl friends here for a birthday brunch and it was just as amazing as I expected and have read about. Delicious food, nice ambiance, and great service! Thanks!
It was our 24 th anniversary and we were treated like gold. Wonderful restaurant
Lafayette does a great job of recreating the experience of eating out in Paris, and it's a lot easier to get into (and less noisy) than Balthazar.
The service and the food are amazing! Almost everything we tried is delicious. Especially the lemon pancakes with berries. Instead of coffee order the cappuccino. The cappuccino is A+ Unfortunately the coffee is bitter and not very good. We will definitely return and we highly recommend Lafayette. The decor is French romantic so it has great ambience. Best pick for breakfast or brunch.
Always delightful. Recommend for any occasion from business lunch to boozy brunch.
My family and I have eaten here numerous times and never had anything short of a great meal. Friendly and welcoming hosts, attentive waitstaff, well prepared dishes and great ambiance. Standard French dishes are always terrific (onion soup, escargots) and interesting main dishes always good as well (duck breast especially). Can’t go wrong. It’s not inexpensive but worth the trip for sure.
Lafayette’s food is very good
Wine list is great and the sommelier is truly helpful
It’s overall a good experience
We had the Salmon Benedict and French toast. It was incredible. I also ordered a side of eggs and bacon which was awesome. We will definitely be back...
Amazing staff. Very friendly host and hostess and amazing waitress
Great food and wonderful location.
Burger is great. I asked jf they had foie gras on the menu and the waiter responded “the closest to that would be a Nicoise Salad”. That was pretty hilarious. Service is mediocre (distracted, no smiles, poor eye contact, reactive) and doesn’t deserve a 20pc tip. No restaurant in NY can compete with the service that Danny Meyer restaurants are able to give. None.
The food and service were quite excellent. Our waitress, Suwany, was very attentive and helpful. It was truly a wonderful dining experience.
Lafayette is another great NYC restaurant. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars is Bc 5 stars I reserve 5 stars for the very very rare too food experience. The service was great and the French toast was superb!!!
Beautiful space, comfy banquettes, and some great menu items. Attentive service. The burger and beet salad were particularly good. We will happily return.
This is a predictable standby that never disappoints!
The service was outstanding! But the food was just meh. It’s cute and we sat outside which we enjoyed.
My in laws are French and have always enjoyed coming here when they visit. Unfortunately our experience today has made them not want to return. Our server was extremely rude, abrasive and inattentive. I can understand that on a busy Saturday it may get overwhelming to handle all of your customers. However that is no excuse for treating them with disrespect. When asked if there was whole grain bread, his response was “..this is a French restaurant, the French don’t eat whole wheat bread” which is both inaccurate and uncalled for. When trying to request a refill on coffee he ran past us and said “just wait” and proceeded to forget about us for another 15 minutes. We also witnessed his short temper with a table next to ours who had asked a busboy for something instead of him. The whole experience has ruined a family favorite and the parents have requested not to go back on their next visit.
Delicious food and wine in an amazing atmosphere. Great service as well. Highly recommend.
It is always great to dine at Lafayette. Service was great, food was delicious, enjoyed the time there!
Escargot was dry. Not swimming in garlic butter. Mussels were tasteless. Sauce thin and lacking in flavor. Vaudovan curry tasted nothing like curry. And very expensive for what is offered.
