What Insiders Are Saying
Balthazar, you had a good 16-year run, but it’s time to step aside. Lafayette is now the quintessential French bistro of bustling downtown NYC.
We ordered steaks and were disappointed.
Servi e is very generic. No personal touch for such a type of restaurant.
This is an expensive place - drinks and food -- is it worth it? I don't know. lovely atmosphere, nice menu and out door seating.
Wonderful ambiance! Food was incredible, great service. Would definitely go back!
Delicious meal and pleasant ambience. We had one vegan in our pArty and everyone was very accommodating. We ordered about 6 appetizers and one main course for 4 people. We also split one dessert. We were stuffed and happy. We will be back
Heavenly coconut, banana chocolate croissant! We came for breakfast and stayed for lunch! The bread is addictively crusty, chewy and savory. My husband and I enjoyed each of our dishes. Love the attentive and professional waiting staff. Will return again and again!
Was my brothers birthday, went there for brunch & was not disappointed. Everything was amazing, especially the pancakes
Food and service was outstanding! The chilled corn soup and the profiteroles were delicious!
Spacious varied indoor seating in a large appealing space, plus sidewalk tables near The Public Theater. Interesting brunch menu with good bread and pastries. Like softly scrambled eggs, smoked salmon Benedict.
Helpful attentive service. Popular with groups of five or more which made for overly loud conversations. The canned music added to the din. Way too loud for this older couple. Glad we tried Lafayette and will recommend to younger friends. We prefer Le CouCou, The Library at The Public Theater, Indochine.
The service was amateurish at best. The food is good so it's a matter of "putting up" with the service.
I read somewhere that this was the new Balthazar. It is nice and a fine place to get a french meal but I don't think it matches up to Balthazar. It is a very beautiful and authentic space. The food is good but not amazing. Wine list is good. I thought prices were a little high for what you got. Overall it was a nice dinner with clients but it didn't have that homey feeling to it.
Many unusual dish combos compared to typical items on a French menu. Restaurant was a bit on the warm side although the AC seemed to be on - there were apparent intermittent changes in temperature. The portions were a bit on the small side and the prices - especially for alcohol - a bit on the high side. The food and service, however, were very good.
I enjoy dining at Lafayette for breakfast and lunch. The last couple of times I've had breakfast there, however, I found my egg entree had gone down a bit in quality: the eggs aren't as tasty and the potatoes lack flavor (which could be solved by replacing the russet white potatoes with Yukon Golds ). The service is always excellent, and at breakfast there are no crowds - the quiet room is a plus.
Had brunch here with my mom. The atmosphere is lively and the service was great. The menu is good but the pastries are better!
Food is delicious but service tends to forget many parts of the order. This has happened to us twice now. A drink is not brought, a side is missed or arrives long after the food. For the establishment, we'd expect better, but perhaps try it out outside of brunch.
Tables no sifficient for twelve
Really good food that was let down by extremely slow service. Went for restaurant week and the meal took over 2 hours. We must have waited 20+ minutes between courses before then waiting 30 min to get our check. It's a shame because the food is great and the space is very pretty
It’s a beautiful restaurant with tasty reasonably priced food. The soup was delicious and the fish was perfectly prepared.
Terrific for pre theater dinner. Great fish and fresh seasonal vegetables !
I hate to say anything bad about a place i've loved since it opened ... but the frisee in my salad had seen better days. The iced tea was below Starbucks. The chocolate dessert was pretty but served like it came from the case, not the kitchen. I asked for a few berries for dessert and was told that they don't do that, any more [really?!]. [Maybe there isn't a pastry chef on premises anymore, either?] Service was minimal; the man clearing was more attentive than the waitress. Hope this was just a bad day, though not in a restaurant of this quality.
Delicioso el egg parfait nos encantó
The pancakes were burnt, they were completely black and the soft scrambled eggs were overcooked. We come to Lafayette often and always order the same items, but today they were inedible. I don’t think we’ll be coming back.
I loved the ambience of the restaurant. I had a brunch menu, french toast and my friend had egg benedict. Foods were just okay, not super. I would go again for friends get together though.
I came here on a double date for Saturday brunch, and it was perfect! The food was high quality, and the service was fabulous. The interior is beautifully decorated, and the outdoor seating area is great as well. It’s a large space for NYC, and feels very open and welcoming.
It was very hot in the restaurant. We asked several times to check the temperature but nothing changed. We enjoyed the food but we were uncomfortable throughout the meal because it was so warm in the restaurant.
Waitress didn’t want to be at work. Took forever to even serve the wine. Had to ask her 2 times for everything. Restaurant had little a/c at 7pm
Been here many times in the past and something is different. People just don’t seem to care like they use to working there. Use to be a great place as little as /
The ambiance was nice but I struggled to find a good food choice, and when the food did arrive it was average. The service was good though.
Great quality food and outstanding service.
Sunday brunch was fab
Not bad. But not a dining experience. Wouldn’t go back. Not a New York experience restaurant. Oversized French cate that is maybe good for a first date or tourist.
I ordered a egg dish for brunch. It was very good, however to justify the $20 plus price there were a lot of eggs in the dish. I could not eat all those eggs. Service and ambience very good. Too expensive.
Great service and lunch. Unfortunately the noise level at the table next to us made it difficult to converse.
A friend and I decided to meet there for brunch given the large number of great reviews. We found the outdoor seating area pleasant and the food quite good. What was a bit of a shock were the prices - $12 for a juice, over $20 for most of the breakfast mains. I’m not sure if it’s just NY, but it seems like these prices were higher than they should’ve been. I definitely won’t be returning.
Great food and service! Would highly recommend. Thank you!
Had steak frites. Much better than Balthazar. Came late for a 10pm meal. Place very quiet & chill.
Lafayette has successfully made the transition from the 'hot' new place to a reliably excellent restaurant over the years. On our most recent visit, the Arctic Char special was particularly good, with a cucumber sauce. An outstanding summer dish. Service was attentive and friendly as always. The terrace is a joy in the summer and requests for outside tables are given appropriate attention. Lafayette never lets us down!
The service was slow - the waiters chatted on the side instead of serving the customers. The food was too salty. Quite a disappointment.
Lafayette offers a variety of delicious, well prepared dishes. Seating can be in either a charming dining room or pleasant outdoor area. Servers are efficient and knowledgeable.
Enjoyed the restaurant, but the service was not great. Our food came before our drinks for one and we had to flag the waiter down for everything. It was not that crowded either...
Everything was great. Love the coffee. All the croissant were fantastic. Good variety on the brunch menu.
Everything was great except they had no air conditioning in and it’s was almost 90 degrees outside.
