Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms.
Chef/Owner Lee Cooper is dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined by Restaurant Director, Lisa Haley. The French-influenced West Coast fare is paired with Haley's eclectic wine program and the bar team's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

A must visit, once in a lifetime, amazing, extraordinary, and thoughtful restaurant.
From service, drinks, to food, one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

What a great find! We love Cafe Medina but hate the wait and L'Abattoir was as wonderful in a different way. The pastries were delicious and the coffee perfectly paired. My husband doesn't like anything too "fussy" and was nervous when we sat down but left raving as much as I was! Both our breakfasts were delicious (nothing left but the plate!) and we can't wait to go back.

Innovative food was also delicious. Not rushed service but great service. Every staff member was a pro and knew what we needed and when with minimal questions or interruptions. Room was very comfortable and intimate, it felt like dining in Manhattan.

My husband & were blown away by the entire experience. Exceeded our expectations! The bread, meals, desserts were prepared with perfection! We enjoyed ourselves immensely! Overall, an exceptional dining experience. Food, service and price were all in alignment. If I had to point out something that wasn't exceptional it would be the noise level of the restaurant, particularly the in-house music. That is probably based on my own preference, so it may be the kind of energy and vibe you are seeking. Definitely recommend this place.

Overall it was a satisfactory dining experience. Very nice servers and decoration. The wine collection was impressive. We made a reservation and had a wait for about 10-15 minutes, not bad for a super busy restaurant. We were offered a glass of champagne each on the house, not quite sure why though lol, possibly due to the wait or the occasion?! The champagne was really good.
The appetizer baked oysters with garlic butte were amazing. I’m not a big fan of oysters myself, but the oysters were very fresh and the sauce was awesome; very creamy and tasty. Scallops and duck for mains; both well made and looked nice. I found the duck a little similar to Cantonese style roasted duck though. The side veggie was a little too much on the salty side for me. The portion of all dishes didn’t seem big at the first glance, but we were both too full for dessert lol.
Didn’t get to try the coffee as we were so full, but the one the table next to us ordered surely smelled good :)
The house made bread was delicious and the service was great. Waitresses were all polite and always came in a timely manner to check on how we like the food and clean up the used utensils, plates and table.
Parking can be a little bit of a challenge in the area, but there’s a pay parking lot about 1.5 block away (roughly 5 minute walk).
It was an enjoyable experience and would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Overall one of the best restaurant experiences, if not the best, we have ever had. The food was amazing, the service was excellent and welcoming, the atmosphere was fun and not pretentious. Would recommend to anyone looking for a great night out.

Heard great things, this was my first visit I took a seat at the bar. The service was fantastic. A small menu made it easy to choose, although all the options seemed like I couldn’t make a bad choice. The pace of food was perfect and not rushed. The presentation was thoughtful and creative. The cocktails were meticulously crafted and well balanced. Having dined all around Vancouver, this was probably one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time.
