Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms.
Chef Lee Cooper and owner/operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined by General Manager Ricardo Ferreira. L'Abattoir Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Went here for my bestie's birthday dinner. Overall, I find the food outstanding...you have to try their veal tartare. It's fantastic!! However, I find food came out a little too slow for such a quiet Sunday night. We waited for a substantial amount of time (around 30 mins) before the appetiser was served. Waited for another 20 minutes or so for the main course to be served. We were excited that our mains were here. But nope...the server brought the wrong food out. Apparently there was a little confusion about the main course. We ordered the lamb sausage to share but the server brought ling cod instead. The kitchen refired the main course and the lamb sausage was out in about 5 mins. Would I be back? Yes, to try the ling cod.
This would be a one star review if at the end of it the server hadn’t comped one of our meals. It took them over 1 hour to serve us brunch, during which time we got offered no food, drink or explanations except for one time. Our server spent more time avoiding us versus even taking pity and bringing a pastry. After 45 minutes he comes over to offer a weak explanation about the batter not being made up for the potato pancakes one of us had ordered (?!?!!!). The menu only had 7 items on it so how could it be one of them was not prepared. After his notification we asked a different server about our meal then she said she’d look into it and promptly disappeared never to appear again. Right as we seriously thought about walking out the food arrived. All of it was lukewarm and the potato pancake dish was greasy fried dripping in oil and none of it was even remotely as advertised for such a fine dining restaurant. Only as he came to clear the plates and asked us how it was that we politely offered our opinion. He then said he’d see what he can do and brought the bill with the comped amount for the pancakes. So seriously disappointing. The service was so so lacking (I mean no one even walked to us for 45 minutes!), the kitchen clearly unprepared and absolutely no one able to remedy a wrong. The decor is nice, the food average. Not worth going to.
The food was outstanding lots of flavour. Dishes were very well presented and perfectly cooked. The foie gras was the best part of my experience. Service was fantastic the servers were always available when you needed something but not overwhelming. They definetley knew their menu and recommended some great wines, which there were lots to choose from. Will definitely be going back.
We had to send one of the entrees back because it was cold. They were very gracious in handling the problem and gave us a free dessert. The food was delicious, the timing to bring it to our table, was a little off. I'd go back and would request a table on the main floor at the back which would be quieter than the tables upstairs.
Ordered a Niçoise salad and asked for no egg. Was brought to me with egg on top. Calling this is a salad was really a stretch. Mostly potato, hardly any salad or beans. More like a generous garnish for a main and definitely overpriced. Service wasn’t particularly attentive either.
We came here for our anniversary dinner and were greeted with complimentary bubbles. We were given three varieties of breads to start the meal off and all were delicious. We ordered veal sweetbreads as an appetizer and the ling cod and lamb sirloin for entrées and all three dishes were amazing. We also ordered a bottle of BC wine to compliment the meal with the help of the sommelier. It is a fairly pricey restaurant with small portions but the quality and flavours were spectacular. There's a reason this restaurant is No.24 in Canada's 100 Best Restaurants 2017. I will gladly return!
I was looking forward to this meal for a Birthday. I eat out a lot and from recent reviews I was expecting a nice fine dining experience.
What I got was an expensive casual dining experience.
The staff was too casual. The food was good but not outstanding. The sommelier provided no input.
The staff needs better training and the food could use more flavour. In general there could have been more attention paid to the details.
I paid a lot of money and I feel I did not receive value for the money.
Food was pretty good and just as what I expected. Had the ling cod while my boyfriend had the pork belly, both of which were cooked very well. But I will say that the desert (maple tart I believe, was what we ordered) could have done with way less pumpkin seeds.
Food: good presentation, quickly served, delicious as always
Server: knew the menu, explained dishes, answered questions, polite, well manicured, professional
Hostess: friendly, very welcoming, polite, well groomed
Restaurant: clean, great seating
Bar: super clean and neat
The food certainly was unique, beautifully presented. We both ordered steak ... amazingly tender and flavourful . The desert... chocolate mousse et al, was mediocre. The wine was outstanding. Coffee... ho hum.... French press. The toughest issue is the noise. As all tables are really close together, you have to be really loud to hear each other.
All I can say is, AMAZING! My husband and I were visiting Vancouver from California for our anniversary & this restaurant was recommended to us from a friend. The service was outstanding, cocktails were unique & tasty, food was exceptional. Before we went, my friend said she would fly to Vancouver just to eat there... I can see why. Definitely a highlight of our trip!
I've wanted to try L'Abattoir for ages, but when selecting from 2-3 higher end restaurants it always seemed to be the odd one out. That will no longer, as the food quality, creativity, and flavour waaay outperformed the majority of restaurants rated above it. Expectations were high as we've hit a few decent restaurants the past while, but we were blown away by how amazing every single course tasted. There were surprise hits (baked oysters) and more familiar items that stood out due to the very high quality of execution (lamb sirloin!!). We were extremely impressed and will definitely be back again!
We had an excellent time overall. As pescatarians, it was a little disappointing that so many items contained meat or other animal products, but do commend the astute server who realized by our selections without us asking. For the rest of the meal, she made sure to point out which items contained ingredients from animal sources, like gelatin in the desserts, so that we could make the right choice for us. Bravo.
Great service, excellent food and really enjoyed the special drink from the drink menu. It was a last minute surprised outting with my wife and you guys made it a special night -our server was very attentive and his recommendations were great choices - thank you
When they called to confirm our reservation (for my guys birthday) I requested a table that we could sit side by side at. So pleased that they did that for us.
Service was attentive and knowledgeable
The food...i found overly complicated
Too many flavours combined
I had a wonderful evening, but think the kitchen could dial it back a bit and have more success.
Halibut with duck jus?????
Too much for my palate
Wow! From the moment we walked in we were simply amazed! Casually cool and grittily chic decor framed a menu that was unbelievable. Starting with the beef tartar...which was BEYOND fantastic and leading on to entrees of octopus, tenderloin of beef and ling cod...every bite was exquisite! And definitely don't retreat to safety when it's time for dessert; the " ice tea" was the star!
Definitely worth it!
