La Veranda - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
I don't know where to begin! Arrived to $21 valet parking which consisted of moving the car three feet on the street. Dress code is casual dressy-others in jeans and flip-flops?? We were told our party was waiting but they were not there.
A women who spoke little English directed me to the kitchen!
We spent 2 1/2 hours there with unbelievably slow service. The waitress was unconcerned and hard to understand. I asked for chicken marsala and pasta, but she did not write down the chicken marsala. I left hungry. She took the order on scraps of paper.
My husband's filet mignon did not get served until everyone else was almost finished eating. She blamed it on the kitchen.
We had two children with us and no attempt was made to move any faster.
Another group came in after us and was served and gone before us.
Their waiter came over and cut the birthday cake and thank God he did or we would still be sitting there.
It was not even crowded. No apology from management for the mixups.
She disappeared with my credit card for about 15 minutes.
Reservations at 6 P.M. and done at 8:30! Ridiculous- never again. Tried to have a special birthday but got aggravation and disappointment!
I have been in bad restaurants but this one top them. The waitress has no idea what was in the menu. The Italian antipasto had pepperoni instead salami and bologna instead mortadella. It is suppose to be an Italian restaurant. The pasta was over cooked and the sauce disgusting. The crime brûlée was cold and shrunk probable in the refrigerator for many days. The only good thing was the wine. They should close this place. Please do not go.....
I've been coming to this place since the early 90s and have never had a bad meal here. Having said that, it looks like they've whacked a lot of their menu sometime during the past year. Many of my old favorites are gone - like the octopus salad and the cold mixed seafood appetizer. Food was still good. Just not as good as I remembered.
What a lovely "find" on the waterfront at Penn's Landing. My husband and I walked to La Veranda from our Hilton hotel. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. We opted to be seated indoor but had the weather been cooperative, the outdoor seating would have been beautiful. We were served a delicious focaccia bread and seasoned dipping oil while our orders were being taken. I ordered the branzino which was expertly deboned tableside resulting in a delicately prepared dish with sautéed veggies (carrots, zucchini, yellow squash & potato) which complimented the meal perfectly. My husband ordered the veal parmigiana which he thoroughly enjoyed. Our server Susan was helpful in making our choices and was delightfully personable without being intrusive. We would definitely return to La Veranda next time we're in Philadelphia.
Overall the food was just OK however we did order a dish which included fig. The dish was served without this and we were never told nor offered something different. Upon asking the server about the missing ingredient, we were told that they had run out . Since this was a key component of the dish.... it did not taste as intended. What was more frustrating is that we were never alerted and given the option to order something else. If the restaurant ran out.... that is OK. When they knowingly run out and attempt to serve the dish and not alert the customer...... that is poor.
There was no parking for this restaurant . . . . until we got to the front doors & saw the sign saying valet parking - why put it up the stairs in front of main door & not on sidewalk near street??? Worst Mojito I ever had!!!! Calamari was good - boyfriend had fettuccine & crabmeat - tasted great! I had the veal Saltiboca - horrible! The sauce was purple & lumpy - came w/ roasted potatoes- not sure if they were really potatoes.
Went there with my friend for her 50th birthday. Quiet, just the two of us. Snagged a seat by the river and ordered up some fried calamari which I ordered from looking at the reviews. And yes, they were living up to their reputation. Crisp and light were hard not to eat like potato chips.
I ordered the dover sole for dinner and was not disappointed. It was deboned table-side and it was as fresh as it gets. Light and airy with some spring vegetables on the side. I am not really sure what my friend ordered, I think it was a chicken dish. We had a great conversation, in which we could actually hear ourselves. Mind you it was early on a Saturday afternoon so it may not have been as crowded yet, which was fine with us. Our server was prompt and courteous, yet not over-bearing. If you haven't try the place, you should. If you live in Philly tip: (we ubered there simply because they were charging way to much for valet) Or even visiting the city.
Great environment, good homemade pasta, beautiful view of the waterand Marina, it is quiet to enjoy conversation with friends. We sat outside next to the water but you can also sit inside. There is room for large groups. The service was amazing. Get treated like a five star restaurant, but come in your comfortable clothes. Easy walk to Penns Landing. We ate here before a concert. Food amount is a good size but maybe small for big eaters. They also have a large wine selection and full bar.
La Veranda is a beautiful restaurant as far as decor is concerned. The valet parking people are a rip off, it says $16 dollars but in little writing it says trucks and SUV's $5 dollars extra. Ridiculous. The staff are very nice and attentive but the food that we ordered was terrible because mine was not seasoned at all and my husband's was overcooked. I was supposed to have grilled shrimp and it had a sauce so I said I would like the angel hair pasta in the same sauce. The shrimps were not grilled they were probably cooked in the seasonless sauce and they did not bother to season the shrimps. It was a bland tasteless dish. What a waste of shrimps and pasta. I had to throw a ton of parmesan cheese on it for it to have any kind of taste at all. My husband's chicken parmigiana was overcooked to the point that it was burnt around the edges had very little sauce and cheese on it. He asked for extra sauce but the chicken was dry because they overcooked it in the oven. I don't know what kind of chef they have in their kitchen but they definitely do not know how to cook, even beginning cooks know they have to season the food and how do you overcook chicken Parmigiana? That's basic Italian 101. I've also had better Sauvignon Blanc. Oh the bruschetta was vinegary. The Calamari was delicious. I highly recommend the fried Calamari.
Great staff from hostess to b server to manager. Didn't realize we would be there during Philadelphia 4 th July fireworks . Manager invited us to view fireworks from veranda before coming back to our table for dessert and coffee. Whole bronzino was delicious as was out other entrees. Atmosphere is terrific and the staff was exceptional. Definitely coming back!
I took my husband for Father's Day and was 100% happy with the entire experience. We were seated by the window over looking the docks/water immediately upon arrival. Warm bread & melted butter was delivered to our table. We ordered appetizers that came out quickly. As soon as we were done the appetizers the main courses followed. Every dish was delicious! Our drink glasses stayed full. The prices for all the food we ordered was amazingly reasonable. Definitely going back!
The ambience was amazing sitting on the waterfront with candles lit. Luis, the manager was so welcoming and personable. Our server didn't miss a beat. Our drinks were always filled without asking, the food was amazing!! They accommodate all special requests without hesitation. It's classy, elegant and inviting!! A must go to in philly!!
The handmade pastas are worth the drive plus the service is great! Staff is very attentive and made everyone feel special. My out of town guests loved their La Veranda experience. Special thanks to Tony our server for doing a fantastic job!
Our first visit to La Veranda. Beautiful, romantic setting along the Delaware. I had the filet and my boyfriend the Dover sole. My steak was wonderful, the Sole was fine but overpriced. Despite that, we will be back in the summer for lunch or another meal when you can sit outside and enjoy the view!
I think this must have been a nice restaurant once, but it's not now. The staff are still attentive and professional. The entrees were not enjoyable, the decor dated, and there were ants on our table. Lovely view of the water - it's a shame about the restaurant. It was empty on a Saturday night, so I guess the word is out.
