Great server, we didn’t feel rushed. Food left a little more to be desired though. A tiny bit disappointed in its one Michelin star
Delicious meal and perfect service! We are regulars at La Vara and it is always outstanding but our one disappointment is that they consistently have fewer vegetarian dishes on the menu than they used to (roughly two years ago.)
Great service and great tapas!
While La Vara is wonderful for dinner, the brunch may be more fantastic! The only problem is that there are so many delicious-sounding options that deciding is really difficult. Thank goodness, our server told us her favorites and the recommendation was fantastic. Grilled grapes, chorizo, crispy torn bread, smoked paprika and poached eggs combined to make a truly memorable and happy-making meal.
Wonderful staff and amazing food
Had one of the best meals of my life at this restaurant. The service is incredible, the food is delicious and delightful and complex, and the vibe of the place is comfortable and cool. I really can't recommend this place enough.
Fantastic place. excellent food, friendly staff, tiny little place in Cobble Hill. Really impressed by the food. Excellent value.
My daughter took me to New York for my 71st birthday. Because I am from a small town in Florida - without many restaurants, one of our goals was to experience authentic food during our visit. LaVara was a wonderful treat. The service was great and the food even better. Thank you for helping to make my birthday such fun.
LaVara had been on my list for a long time. I'm sure if I was a Cobble Hill native, it would be one of my go to places. It's a perfect neighborhood joint with a sophisticated casual vibe.
I walked in and was so into the vibe of this place. I was greeted by friendly, stylish, lovely people and sat in a charming table that has that perfect balance of offering you just enough of your own privacy but also not separated from the overall crowd. That's what gives this place such a great vibe.
The hostess was passionate about her favorites on both the wine list and the menu and was generous in sharing her opinions. The Syrah is an outstanding by the glass red to order with your plates. I highly recommend it. My mouth was watering as I looked over the menu and I couldn't decide, so i leaned on her expertise to help me make some choices.
The food was solid, but not memorable. Nothing negative to say about it at all. It is delicious, well-executed Spanish food and i would definitely go back and try more things on the menu. It just wasn't a mind blower.
We had the roasted vegetables, which were really delicious and well-handled. It was squash forward which was perfect for the season. We gave that dish a B+/A-
fried artichoke with sardine aioli. Both the artichoke itself and the aioli it came with could have packed a little more flavor. And the artichoke was just a tad overcooked. Again, a solid and very enjoyable dish. Just didn't have that extra magic to make it amazing. B+
chicken hearts. A favorite of mine and again this dish was delicious but a tad disappointing. I found the hearts to be a touch underseasoned and relied on some citrus to deliver the flavor profile. i would have appreciated a bit more thought in balancing the savory treat. They were, however, cooked perfectly. B+
Finally we had the pork which seems as if it might be a house specialty entree. The flavor was good, and the pork was well handled, but not legendary A-
Definitely recommend this place.
Very special place with very special food. We've been there three times and expect to go back frequently.
In an unassuming location and a simple atmosphere. The food was delicious, unlike anything I have really tasted and fits the description of the restaurant well. The ingredients were fresh, well prepared and we were dining with world food travelers who were all very pleased.
This is a true gem. The food, staff and room are all amazing. Your food is memorable and creative and we look forward to our return visit. We wish continued success and many stars.
The restaurant is lovely and incredibly well located. Unfortunately both the appetizers and enteees, all of which were recommended by our server, were nearly inedible. The churros, which we ordered for dessert were delicious but the rest of the meal was a bust. Will neither return to nor recommend the restaurant.
The food was good but not that mind-blowing. I don’t know if the Michelin standards are different from country to country but comparing with the standards I’m used to they are under the one star especially the overall experience. The service was the worse (no advices about food or wine, presenting the plates, waiters putting the garbage out during service, ...). The toilets were gross and the kitchen looked very unclean. I feel like they likely got some network to get this star and we all know that it brings tons of visits for the best and the bad!
Really spectacular, delicious, perfect. Great service too and the food was tasty and beautifully plated.
La Vara is delicious, period. And our waitress and the host were so nice. Small room gets a little loud but in the back it was better.
We came to La Vara for an early Valentine's Day dinner. Everything we ordered was amazing - I even enjoyed the Pipirrana con Grano (cucumber and grain salad) despite not usually liking cucumber. We particularly enjoyed the gurullos (Murcian pasta) and Sobrasada con Miel (spreadable sausage with honey). We shared a pitcher of sangria, which was delicious too, and finished with amazing olive oil ice cream. The staff were friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is lively but not too loud. Overall I highly recommend La Vara!
My partner and I celebrated our 19th anniversary , and we were treated very special by the staff (thank you ) . The food was amazing.
Excellent and attentive staff. Food wonderful we felt we were back in spain
This place is fantastic - the food is so good and the staff is extremely courteous and helpful. I ate here for the first time a few weeks ago and had to go back right away!
Nice place. Drinks are very good. Service was excellent. I want to give it more stars but the food was disappointing.
Amazing dishes, great flavors, great presentation. The staff and service was outstanding!!!
Just great all around
Just really enjoyed all of it. Delicious and unique cuisine, lovely server.
My husband and I came to New York to visit our kids, both of whom live in Manhattan. My son recommended that we try La Vara and I agreed, although it wasn't as convenient as the other restaurants we chose. It ended up being our favorite, one of the ones that we'll put on our every time we visit list. It was wonderful that we were five people because we got to try lots of different dishes. I think we ordered 12 dishes, which we managed to finish, but we could have had less. My favorites were the paella, which was smaller than I expected; the fried chick peas and the spreadable sausage. The meal was paced very well and we also enjoyed our wine choices. Great food and service. And although the place was very busy, we could still have a conversation without having to shout. Can't wait to return.
The food is really good, but if you’re looking for authentic Spanish food this is not your place.
I would say that the food is Spanish inspired but not necessarily Spanish and the restaurant does not have the vibe of a Spanish restaurant (more like a Brooklyn hipster vibe). Moreover, they fail to explain that the portions are for sharing (all of them). The service is really good though and the food too, is just that it wasn’t what I was expecting.
Tapas style with what is described as “moorish” influence. Enjoyed the sweet potato and shrimp special. The rest was a little disappointing.
We have been here several times and have always been very pleased with the food and service. We enjoy both dinner and brunch here. Creative menu. Will certainly return.
Great food and service. The specials were really outstanding.
The flavors were spot on! Every dish our group ordered was amazing and something as simple sounding as fried chickpeas packed a great punch of flavor.
Great wine list and excellent food. Love the details of every plate. I will come back.
Great tasting food and selection. Service was attentive but not overbearing, which was greatly appreciated. The sobresada con miel is excellent, as is the duck.
Amazing meal. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed the discussion with the bartender who provided some outstanding suggestions for the meal. Will definitely go back the next time I'm in the city!
All good. Service a little rushed for a Wednesday.
We had a very pleasant dinner. Food was very good as was the service. Will definitely go back and recommend that others do too.
We came to La Vera after reading a few reviews. We were blown away by the amazing brunch menu and beautiful atmosphere. Our server was so incredibly kind, knowledgeable and professional, as were all the people working there. We were in NY for three days and this was our favorite meal.
Very nice spanish food! The tapas were great and the wine was delicious! The service was everything i expected from Brooklyn: chill and relaxed.
Great place to dine, especially with a group. Every dish we tried was delicious.
