About La Toscana Ristorante
We are centrally located off Hwy. 101 in San Rafael, across for the famous Frank Lloyd Wright Marin Civic Center. La Toscana is a family owned and operated Italian restaurant and bar located in Marin County. It was established in 1985 by Paolo Mori, his wife, Marilyn, and Michele Quilici. The owners all grew up in Lucca, Italy and immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1950s. They wanted to create an atmosphere that reminded them of home – a place where locals would gather to eat, meet friends and family and celebrate with food and wine as every Italian family does. Chef and co— owner Giovanni Racanello joined La Toscana in 1986. Paolo and Marilyn’s daughter, Laura Mori Riella, and youngest son, Michael Mori, joined the La Toscana team in 1992 and 2002, respectively. Paolo loved to make people feel welcome and, just like all the Moris, enjoyed his food and wine and loved to see others do the same. This is the proud tradition that La Toscana carries on.

La Toscana Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
La Toscana is a classic American-Italian restaurant with a comprehensive, classic Italian menu, good prices, an excellent wine list, great food, and outstanding service. It is busy and somewhat noisy from 6:30 till about 7:45, when it "empties out" at least on Sunday night. A Marin treasure!
We enjoyed another great evening at La Toscana. Whether headed to a show at the Civic Center or just out with friends, we have always had great experiences here. The food is very good (personal favorite and a MUST try the Cacio e Pepe). The wait staff is very friendly and always provide good service. Location is a very easy off the freeway spot with plenty of parking. Highly recommend La Toscana!
Always a stand out for authentic Italian food. Talented chef. I ordered the lasagna made with home made pasta and bechamel sauce and it was disappointing. It just was not quite as delicious as it had always been and a tad sparse in the meat department. Could be it was not made fresh that day? It has now gone to the bottom of my list of favorite foods to order. My two Guests had gnocchi and pasta with seafood - both delicious. Usually very noisy but on Monday night it was heavenly. Tried the Russian Mule cocktail that I would not order again. Not much flavor and very watery. Over the years they’ve always been my go to restaurant for northern Italian Food.
I have been there twice before on a Sunday night. The food is always terrific. This time I went on a Friday with my elderly mother. Not a good choice on my part. It is noisy, and the server did a heroic job, but had way too many tables. The service was VERY slow and my mother could not get her glass of wine until dinner was almost over. I will return, but only on a Sunday night.
We had not eaten there in several years. I think there is new ownership or something. The restaurant was nicely remodeled with outdoor dining and a updated bar.
There was a significant change in the menu, but the food was fair at best. Our server never explained the specials to us when we were seated but did offer them to the party that was seated next to us AFTER we had placed our order. The calamari dore was overly breaded and the sauce over the veal scallopini was not very tasty.
We will not be returning.
We were warmly greeted upon arrival and seated promptly. The waiter was very accommodating in making substitutions for three of the four orders. Our party of four found the food fresh and delicious. This was an impromptu gathering of friends from different cities and we just stumbled on this place to eat. We all totally enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend it to anyone.
We have been t La Toscana before and have always enjoyed the experience. We went with friends from San Francisco and basically enjoyed a "sharing menu". They were thrilled by both the quality and preparation of the dishes and we'll probably return in the near future!
It was a warm night, we were seated at a table for two in the very middle of the restaurant, with the air conditioning on so high we actually had to put on our coats to stay comfortable. The table had no napkins or silverware. There was one pepper shaker on the table, that was it. They brought us water, bread and butter, but still no silverware. We finally had to ask for some silverware and a napkin. They were very busy, so basically we were ignored. The food was fine, but not great. Nothing special to make it worth our time or a second visit.
Wonderful food and service at this Marin hotspot and favorite. Our party had delicious cocktails and wines off the beverage menu, and enjoyed the NY Strip steak, the Penne Pasta, Tortilini, and arugula salad. Everything was cooked to perfection. We all had a great time at La Tuscana. I highly recommend going here for your next time out!
