About La Toscana Ristorante
We are centrally located off Hwy. 101 in San Rafael, across for the famous Frank Lloyd Wright Marin Civic Center. La Toscana is a family owned and operated Italian restaurant and bar located in Marin County. It was established in 1985 by Paolo Mori, his wife, Marilyn, and Michele Quilici. The owners all grew up in Lucca, Italy and immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1950s. They wanted to create an atmosphere that reminded them of home – a place where locals would gather to eat, meet friends and family and celebrate with food and wine as every Italian family does. Chef and co— owner Giovanni Racanello joined La Toscana in 1986. Paolo and Marilyn’s daughter, Laura Mori Riella, and youngest son, Michael Mori, joined the La Toscana team in 1992 and 2002, respectively. Paolo loved to make people feel welcome and, just like all the Moris, enjoyed his food and wine and loved to see others do the same. This is the proud tradition that La Toscana carries on.

La Toscana Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
LaToscanna has been the iconic Italian restaurant in Marin County, California. Authentic Italian food made the old fashion way. Food is superb and highly recommend the Italian pasta dishes as well as their calamari steak. Lasagna is a hous favorite and a hit with the locals. Eclectic supper club. Jeans to dress up is accepted BUT make sure you have reservations. Excellent bar with expert mixologists.
It's a restaurant you want to go for when you want a very friendly, casual atmosphere with delicious food, and great waiters. We go there often. I am thankful they have been around as long as they have, and if they keep up this level of service, they will outlive me!!
Its become hit or miss lately. The kitchen needs to learn Italian recipes. Veal Picatta should not have a gloppy gravy sauce on it. They did this once before on Petrale Picatta. Lemon and white wine should be used as well as butter and capers. What happened to the usual crusty french bread served with olive oil and vinegar? Now the bread is a soft crust milk bread served with a whipped margarine stuff. Green vegetables with nothing on them. Had to ask for a little olive oil they were so bland. All in all a rather disappointing experience. I understand food is expensive but cutting back in these ways does not make for a positive experience. I hope they correct these criticisms as we enjoy the restaurant and the owners are wonderful people.
My friend and I both love Italian food, but were disappointed with the quality of our entrees. I had cannelloni, which was so boring and tasteless it was really inedible. Her chicken marsala, she told me, was just not very good. The meal was way too expensive for something so mediocre. Maybe we just made poor choices, but those dishes are Italian staples and should be excellent.
This is the best Italian restaurant we have found in Marin. The Putanesca is not traditional, but it is excellent, with a spicy red sauce. The Lasagna is very good, but not outstanding. The Caesar salad is also very good, and the restaurant has a diverse selection of wines. It has very good ambience and the service is very good. Minor variations on the menu selections are OK with the staff. I like a lot of cheese on my entre, and I got a LOT!! We very much enjoyed it.
We enjoyed New Year’s Eve dinner at La Toscana and it was wonderful. The food was well-prepared and service excellent. Given how busy they were we were impressed the kitchen could keep up. We have been enjoying La Toscana for over 20 years...they are better than ever!
We celebrated an early New Years Eve with another couple here. Made my reservation through Open Table several weeks in advance and when arrived was given an AWSOME table. Corner booth. It was a great location. While the restaurant had alot of people I was not shouting in that corner booth. Very cozy and wonderful ambiance. Food was very good too! We enjoyed it very much and will be back!
Friendly incredibly accommodating staff. Food was mediocre at best. Carpaccio - drowning in capers on fatty slices of beef. Burrata salad good, with tomatoes that tasted like tomatoes in mid winter (baby tomatoes) but over toasted bread slices were too thick to eat without the whole slice crumbling. Veal scallopini was meh. On the verge of tasteless. All portions were generous, but not great food. Very noisy in the bar, but very friendly customers!
We have been to La Toscana many times for lunch, for dinner and for an afternoon cocktail and appetizers. We have never been disappointed. For our last dinner, our server Renee was very attentive and personable, and the food was again outstanding. The bartender also makes a great Negroni, and the wine selections are excellent. La Toscana has become a go-to place for us.
The service was excellent. The Pescadero pasta was very good with ample amount of shellfish. The tables are very close together so I did feel a bit cramped. The close proximity of other diners was a reason the noise level was a bit high. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant to family and friends.
La Toscana has been a family favorite for years. There are so many favorite dishes that jump off the menu, you have to try all four courses -- and dessert! The tortellini with carbonara sauce is to die for! I can't say enough great things about La Toscana - the food is delicious, service is exceptional; the overall dining experience is delightful and always leaves you looking forward to the next time!
Even on the busiest nights (a Saturday night in December), the food is delicious, and service very good. While the menu doesn't change much, every dish is "special." Unfortunately the noise level is a problem. Still, it's a lovely place for a nice meal without being rushed. Thank you!
La Toscana is a classic American-Italian restaurant with a comprehensive, classic Italian menu, good prices, an excellent wine list, great food, and outstanding service. It is busy and somewhat noisy from 6:30 till about 7:45, when it "empties out" at least on Sunday night. A Marin treasure!
