About La Ripaille
Opened in 1980, La Ripaille is one of the oldest restaurants in West Village. Some of the regulars have been coming for as long as 25 years. We want everyone to feel welcome here, whether it’s the celebrities who frequent, the children for whom we provide games & crayons, or the people who live in the Village. The owner, Alain Laurent, is integral in the day-to-day processes of La Ripaille. He daily scours the market for the freshest produce, often choosing the day’s specials based on his finds. This keeps the specials seasonal & unique. He decorates the ever changing wine list with the best wines available. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a terrace for the summer & a fireplace in the back for the winter. Service started a little rocky but I think the two servers were actually newer. Who I assume could only be the owner arrived and took over. He was fantastic and energetic and gave great recommendations. The food was excellent and they have a wonderful little wine list. The place is intimate and cozy with dim lighting. And I had casually mentioned my mother birthday and they ended up bringing out dessert and singing. Service, attention and food excellent! I will certainly be back.
Leave your passport home and visit this authentic French village gem. The owner Alain welcomes each guest as if they were visiting him at home. We travel from Westchester to experience the ambience, decor and fine food. Alain entertains the diners with his humorous presentation of the specials du'jour. The food is presented beautifully, tastes great and I highly recommend the pate as an appetizer but you can't go wrong ordering anything on the menu. Take Alain's suggestions regarding which wine to order; you won't be disappointed. La Ripaille is my favorite restaurant; I'm never disappointed and you won't be either.
We ate here last night for our one year anniversary dinner. The mussels, steak, and scallops were incredible! The pear tart was okay, nothing too special. This restaurant was great, but my one complaint is the bathroom. When I went in the fan was leaking and it pretty much gave me a shower :(. The staff was apologetic and seemed to get it fixed, but they didn’t go out of their way to ensure I was okay. I was all wet!
I've been coming to this unique restaurant for years and it always is a special experience for two reasons: the food and the service. My date and I shared the infamous broccoli mousse and moules poulette (mussels in a white wine and herb sauce with a splash of cream). My cassoulet entree was a traditional and soul satisfying dish that cannot be found anywhere else so far from France itself. We almost fought over the last bite of the lemon tart that was recommended to us at the end of our meal. The attention and care that the chef puts into the plates are on par with the love the owner clearly has for his restaurant and clientele. Will keep coming back for as long as this place exists.
Love to dine at this French bistro. I went to this restaurant twice already in a short period of time. The place is cozy, the food is good and the service is attentive. I highly recommend to order the daily specials he suggest because they are cooked just right, from the starters to main courses to desserts. The owner himself serves the tables and funny, you can't resist his thank you kisses. Every customer is so so welcome from him.
Overall this is a nice space that evokes a French country feel with it's homey decor. The owner is a very nice guy and makes you feel very welcome in his restaurant. We started with the warmed brie over crouton - very forgettable - and the pate, equally average. My wife enjoyed her main dish (halibut). Steer clear of the sorbet (more like a sno-cone) and my espresso was luke warm.
We have in the past been fond of Ripaille. Simple, quiet place to dine, that is hard to find in NYC. Don't know why the food seemed a little fresher and brighter the last time we were here. But that was about 4 years ago.
Maybe it was because we waited almost an hour for our entrees to come out? Which was interesting since there were only 2 other tables with patrons.
But, the thing that disappointed us the most was the wine list. I have seen many. I knew many of the wines on the list. The markup was off the charts. No way to justify this. The wine prices do not match the food menu. Shouldn't mark a $10 bottle up to $55 And that is one of their least expensive bottles on the list. What? Makes me sad. Heavy sigh.
After a long walk in the village, we decided to have a dinner in this charming French bistro-restaurant. We was seduced by the place from the greeting at the entrance, to the warm + friendly staff and not least the delicious food!! The food price was very reasonable and wine carefully selected (we had 2 bottles of haut-médoc) not far from the Hudson River the weather was just perfect and had an unforgettable summer dinner in this restaurant.❤️. ( HIGHLY RECOMMENTED)
La Ripaille was recommended to us by a friend and we were really looking forward to trying it out. We went for brunch on a Sunday and were welcomed in by the charming proprietor and his staff, who were wonderful. The ambiance is fun, French country influence with strains of Edith Piaf playing in the background. We ordered the mushroom soup, which is excellent, and an omelette and the eggs Benedict. The omelette and the Benedict were served luke warm and lacked flavor . . . particularly the Benedict. We also ordered a side of the pommes frites, which were really disappointing. . . they are not home made, but clearly the frozen tasteless imitation of the real thing. Lastly, we also ordered a couple of mimosa's to accompany our meal and they were carefully measured . . . missing that zing! We eat out all of the time in Manhattan and were hoping to find our new neighborhood regular spot in La Ripaille. We are sad to say we didn't.
My favorite French restaurant in Manhattan or anywhere else come to think of it. Alain the owner is hands on and ensures that all of his diners are attended to. The food is fabulous, the wine list superb and the ambiance inviting. We are writers from Columbia University who gathered here in orderto discuss our work. It was the perfect setting to do so. I've been all over the world and have particular refined tastes, La Rappaile is perfection.
When the notice of French restaurant week reminded me of La Ripaille I realized I hadn't been there in nearly 35 years. What a lovely surprise! Their $38 prix fixe – appetizer, main course and a glass of wine – was a winner. A tasty gazpacho was followed by salmon in mustard sauce that was the best in recent memory. It came with shaved Brussels sprouts in a lemon beurre-noir – also excellent – and a nice glass of Chardonnay. The charming host made it a very pleasant experience.
Amazing dinner!! The owner was warm and welcoming we directly felt like our first time in Paris. The restaurant was very buzy ,the staff took well-care of US! We started with some french classic appetizers ( escargot, fois gras, endive salad) ,then we had a salmon special and an organic chicken with 4 types of mushrooms. We wasn't rushed and had the opportunity to have a romantic dinner with some excellent wine. All the dishes was cooked to perfection garnished with healthy vegetables . We highly recommend this place to everyone that love a truthful tradiditional food
We all agreed it was mediocre,overpriced and a very disappointing Father's Day Dinner. Lucky for me the family says I'm entitled to do over.
We were the only ones in the restaurant. Should have been a warning. Just a few of the "low" lights: Two out of 3 drinks were wrong. Vodka and soda came as Vodka and tonic. Waiter said: the cans look the same. Gin on the rocks came with exactly...no rocks at all. Two out of 3 appetizers were pathetic: tasteless endive salad, and Brie appetizer was 3 slivers on sad crackers. My champignons app. was pretty good.
Main courses: Pasta and shrimp was average, Halibut special was cooked beyond death, veal had good sauce but was tough. With 3 ok glasses of wine bill came to $270 for 3. Did not stay for desert. There are much better meals to be had elsewhere for that money. So La Ripaille is a definite will not return. One more thing, owner walked in as we were finishing up and we did not even get eye contact. Maybe he was afraid to ask for our opinion? Probably a good idea.
I went here for the second time for a date night, my date and I enjoyed it so much that we had to go back again. The food once again was delicious, the service was very quick and attentive, and the bill was extremely reasonable for the neighborhood. My date and I were very well cared for during our meal, especially by the owner, a lovely Frenchman who we have come to know very well. He is vibrant and welcoming, and makes everyone feel at home in this petite French neighborhood bistro. I know I will be returning again soon!
Sunday dinner for 2 at La Ripaille. We looked at 10 other cafes on the street. Most were busy but the food looked ordinary. 92 degrees outside. A/C is welcoming. We are the only customers at 5:30pm. The owner is very charming. Had 2 apps, mushrooms in puff pastry and zucchini , gruyere crepe and 1 entree, seared halibut. They are all fabulous. Rich, perfectly cooked, nice presentation. We are thrilled. Ordered 2 dessert tarts. Pastry chef must have had day off. This place is long established, dark brick interior and we saw the local regulars coming as we left. Worth a visit for a quiet meal, well prepared.
