La Piazza Dario Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
My son and I revisited La Piazza Dario on Sunday night for his birthday. Once again the food was wonderful. The service was slightly slower than usual because there was a 36 person group celebrating an 85'th birthday located immediately adjacent to us who arrived only minutes before us. The flow and energy of the experience was very entertaining and we were not in any hurry so actually appreciated more time to linger over the food and beverages.
If you really want a good pasta, you should try Pasta Polo instead of La Piazza. The noodles at LP look like from those packaged dry noodles instead of the fresh one. We were shocked to find out that 15% tips (for a party of 2) was added automatically onto the bill while the service was just OK. We paid it anyway because we did not want to put the waitress in an odd situation.
Have had this on my restaurant to do list for a long time after hearing their radio jingle so many times. There were a few large groups there on the evening we went, our table was booked and no delay there although there were a few customers in the waiting area. Our group had the shared appy platter which looked great, the minestrone soup was wonderful. I had the sole special and there was a great deal of fish so very good value. Canoli & Tiramisu desserts to die for and good portion size! From start to finish we did not see the same staff member twice but I put that down to how busy it was on that evening.
We had reservations, came in and there was a nice table for 2 half cleaned, the waitress said we are just cleaning your table..no problem. We waited and as we did I saw them place a party of two at our table that we were waiting for. There seemed to be confusion and we felt it. We were then placed at a table near the bar (table for 5) which we asked to be moved from as it was impossible for our entire part to communicate. The waitress suggested rearranging the table to four settings to bring things together better which was perfect. However then before we even cracked a menu they were there to take our order (x2) leaving us feeling pressured. We were bumped and knocked by passing waiters and waitresses and felt right in the way.
Disappointing dining experience in that service was hurried, frenetic and confusing. Server split wine at every glass, hurriedly cleared the plates before others finished eating with frenetic energy that was not not relaxing. Pasta was excellent, salmon was not. Coffee extremely weak and tasteless.
Very good food, but they are a bit on the pricey side. One thing that stood out for me was that the waiters/waitresses were not focused on one table. We had good services from 4 different staff. Maybe it's because they were not busy, or that is how they operate.
We arrived on a busy night where half the restaurant was occupied by a large party. In my opinion, this is the true test for a restaurant - the ability to keep the rest of your guests happy while serving a large party. The staff at Dario's gave a great effort! The food was wonderful and classic Italian fare. Our pastas arrived piping hot and very flavorful and the veal was melt in your mouth tender! This is definitely a restaurant with an old world feel, which gives it its charm. The 'rotating service' at our table was understandable given the large party at the other end of the restaurant, but I do wish that some of the servers maintained their smile - we saw some frustration, but all in all, an acceptable service.
Food and dessert are excellent. My last visit was 20 years ago and it is amazing to see this old place still around. Nice Italian atmosphere as expected. Only room for improvement is food are cooked skillfully but with way too much salt for today's standard.
I had a great time. Thanks!
|The food was overpriced The waiter was unattentive We had the special salad for $14.00 a few spinach leaves with a sprinkling of goat cheese on top. Extremely small portion of nothing!I had the duck with portobello mushroom sauce. It was okay, but salty!! When I phoned the restaurant to ask if they had gluten free pasta, they said yes. But that was not true. My daughter is gluten sensitive, and all they had for the gluten free pasta was Quinoa, which is not a pasta, a grain. She had an extremely small portion of this with pesto on top. It was not enough, so she ordered some chicken which was plain and unappealing. Two others had chicken gorgonzola and another chicken, but again it was salty. The time between courses was too long.
La Piazza Dario Ristorante is like an old friend you haven't seen for a long time. Immediately after coming into the restaurant you feel right at home as if you had just been there. The staff and management greet you with a warmth you rarely see in a restaurant of this quality. You open the menu and are surprised at the quality and reasonable prices of the wines. Then you order your food and from the antipasti to the main course to the dessert are treated to a high quality of food that you knew to expect. One tip for the dessert, order the home made cannoli. It's as good as anything you'll eat in Italy.
The dinner last night was FANTASTIC!!
We had the mussels to start and they were superb!
I had the vongole which (as usual) was delicious!
My dining companion had the black cod which was absolutley AMAZING!
Throw in amazing service and sme great wine...what a treat to spend time at Darios!!!!
The ambiance was wonderful. The service was friendly. However, being a "food critic" I must say my risotto was too salty. The beef carpaccio had no flavor and it had only 3 small shavings of parmesean on it. the garlic prawns were spicy rather than "garlicy".
i have dined in numerous "iron chef" owned restaurants and this one is "ok" compared to the top restaurants. i wouldn't go here for the food but more for the environment.
The antipasto appetizer for two was presented nicely and tasted good. Unfortunately, the Penne al pollo cream sauce was watery and the chicken was quite overcooked. The pasta itself was done nicely. My guest had the Penne Ciociara which was tasty. Wine was ok. Ambiance was good. The service started out well but our server disappeared during out visit. An older gentleman came by to assist but he seemed to be in a bad mood which impacted our experience. He was hesitant on refilling our water. It was not a full house so we were puzzled by his behaviour. Fortunately there was a lovely lady that was very friendly who rang up our bill very graciously. This left us on a good note when we departed the restaurant.
A hidden gem in a community neighborhood. Basic menu with variety for every family member. Reservations recommended. We dined with large groups around us and thus the restaurant was very noisy. Pricing responsible. Parking easy and free. Food was basic needing more flare and seasoning. Ask for a table away from the door entrance as it is quite cool.
The complimentary bread wasn't very fresh, almost stale and displayed in a very poor manner. It was quite noisy for a higher end restaurant. The appetizer list did not have many options typical of an Italian fine dining establishment, however the anitpasto platter was good. The main courses were enjoyed by all but nothing to write home about. Overall it was a little bit disappointing compared to several other Italian restaurant options in the lower mainland. Wouldn't recommend it or come back again.
We enjoyed our dinner very much. The house antipasto plate for two was excellent and both our entree choices were well-prepared and served in a timely manner by friendly and attentive staff, even though the restaurant was very busy. A cheerful, inviting spot on a wintry night!
This time, we were a large group of 10. The service and food was very good and prices are competetive. The atmosphere is cozy. They specially prepared a couple of delicious large appetizer platters that were great for sharing. We would recommend this restaurant. Others in our party have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed.
