About La Panetteria

La Panetteria has been a Bethesda Landmark for more than 35 years. It has won accolades from food critics and many loyal customers for its superb menu and impeccable service. Cozy, old-fashioned Italian restaurant, serves both northern and southern Italian specialties, with homemade pasta, fresh seafood, veal and chicken dishes and best white pizza in the area. The restaurant invites diners in with a tree shaded street front awning, and an Old Italy atmosphere enhanced by a sunlit indoor atrium with graceful hanging baskets and period paintings on white washed stucco walls. The ceramic tile floor and white tablecloth complete the ambience of a true trattoria. The menu is extensive and features a wide variety of classic Italian dishes, plus daily specials like risottos, veal shank, seafood lasagna, rolattini and Zuppa. If you have a favorite Italian dish you will find it on the menu. La Panetteria means ‘the bakery’ in Italian and all the bread is baked fresh daily.

Went for my birthday dinner with my husband. It's a small restaurant, but very nicely decorated. The food and service were excellent. We had the mozzarella en carozzo, which was perfectly done...it's easy to have this turn out soggy, but theirs was fabulous. I had Chicken Frances, which was wonderful, as was my husband's grilled calamari. And we shared an excellent bottle of montipulciano wine. A great evening, and I would highly recommend this for a nice evening out. They also have a large room at the back of the restaurant, perfect for a group event.

Dropped in for comfort Italian before a show at the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club. Couldn't have been finer for the occasion. We were booked early and so had the back dining room mostly to ourselves. Waitstaff quietly attentive, food hot and tasty from the kitchen. We love neighborhood places that are completely dependable and cozy. We don't need surprises when out for the evening. Chicken Piccata just right with the lemon and capers. Long may this little gem live!

Friends were in town with 2 grandchildren (13 and 10), so we met for dinner here. Everyone loves Italian, and everyone was able to get his or her favorite dish or try something new. They even allowed one person to substitute the side pasta for Risotto when asked. We went in with 6 on a Friday night at 6:30, were seated immediately at a nice table in the front (the kids could watch people go by), and service was excellent. Noise level was not a problem at all. Highly recommended!

The food was generally excellent: The grilled calamari was fresh and prepared to perfection, as was the fried calamari... in sum, a delight. The ravioli was simply delicious, with very good balance of spices and cooked just right. Only one false note: the spaghetti carbonara was wayyyyy overpowered with garlic, so I will remember to ask that they prepare it without it, as that just ruined the experience of this one dish for me. That said I know there are some who would welcome the abundance of garlic, so perhaps just a matter of taste. In any event, I think it fair to rate our dinner at this really nice restaurant as a solid 4 out of 5 stars. We left extremely satisfied and were it not for the Carbonara's it would be a solid 5 out of 5. I highly recommend it to all Italian cuisine aficionados. You will enjoy dining there for sure.

Second time there, and likely the last. The first time, the bread was great, this time medíocre. The shrimp in two of our dishes was clearly not fresh, and inedible. The pizza was soggy on the bottom. My side order of pasta with clam sauce, for which I agreed to pay extra, was really aglio with oglio. When I complained about it, the waiter said, "did I want clams in it?" And said the kitchen insisted it was clam sauce. Overall, a big disappointment. I was embarrassed because I had brought family.

Wonderful dependable neighborhood Italian restaurant. Not on the cutting edge of gourmet cooking, but very good ingredients. It is also a real bargain, with salad, vegetables, and pasta included with the entrees. Generous portions - I took home half of my entrée and enjoyed it the next day. Pleasant staff.

We were there to celebrate my birthday with my wife, parents, and in-laws. We were offered an appetizer that was not on the menu- a sampler of many of the items they offer. When the bill arrived, it was a $50 appetizer- a little aggressive for something that didn't have a stated price and if we had known probably would not have ordered.

When we finally received entrees, the waiter brought out "eggplant Parm" for my mother in law. She had clearly ordered a non- fried eggplant dish, when she said that was the wrong order to the waiter, he said, "oh, sorry, this is the right dish, I called it the wrong name" and put it down. After review, it was still the wrong dish. We asked another waiter to clear it as it was not the right dish and that we didn't want it. Our waiter came back out with the dish, and said it was not fried and put it down a second time. We showed him the breading, and again said we no longer wanted it. It was cleared a second time. The waiter had become more and more rude each time we interacted with him, lying about the food, not apologizing, being difficult and argumentative.

Once everyone else was done with our dishes the waiter came out and asked if we wanted desert, we said no thanks. He immediately brought the bill out. We had more wine to drink so we left the bill where he had placed it and ignored it. He came over twice, asking if we had put our cards down to pay. Clearly he was trying to get us out of there. We felt rushed and pushed out. We finished our wine, split our check, and left.

It had been a few years since we had dined here and had tried it the previous week, having a nice meal. It's great to have an Italian restaurant to go to when in the mood but based on our last experience, we will NEVER go back.

Overall excellent. Only two negatives: the pasta should have been more al dente, and too much cheese, not enough seafood on the eggplant/ seafood special. Would go back, however. Spinach/canellini dish, mushroom soup, halibut were big hits.

One of my favorite spots in the whole world. The food is fantastic; highlights are the fried zucchini appetizer and the salad dressing. The service is fantastic - very attentive and friendly waitstaff. And talk about value - you get excellent portion sizes that taste fantastic for an unbelievable price. I've been to fine restaurants all over the world including michelin star and this is my favorite.

This restaurant needs to go. While food is ok, particularly the homemade pasta, there is nothing authentic Italian left besides that and some outdated decor. It was almost empty on a Friday night. No Italians working there that we could see. No knowledge of how to serve, the etiquette of serving. Couple next to us got up and in the middle of their dinner - ants in the parmesan cheese bowl on their indoor table. Mumbling that the place has gone downhill.

DEFINITELY nothing special about this place at all

The food was not so great. The mushrooms were too soggy and sour. We ordered mussels in white wine but there was no taste to it. The dish was too runny. Then we got some chicken dish with spagetti , although chicken was alright , the tomato sauce on pasta was tasteless and again very sour. Overall not a good experience. Will never go there again nor suggest it to anyone.

How did I live in this area for 18 years and miss this gem of a restaurant? I haven't experienced this level of friendly service in ages. Delicious food (rainbow trout, lamb chops, and chicken piccata), topped with a carafe of Chianti. I can't wait to return.

First time visit to La Panetteria. Menu with a lot of varieties.
Chicken dishes are wonderful and the Linguine with Pesto was excellent. Best i've ever had.
We will definitely be back.. Want to try their famous White Pizza. We saw a lot of people ordering this as an appetizer and it looked great.

First time visit to La Panetteria while visiting family. We came at lunchtime - not aware that the lunch menu is only available on weekdays. The decor was charming especially in the atrium area. The server was very attentive even though he spoke very little English. The bread fresh made and delicious with the olive oil. All of our entrees were delicious with fresh made pasta - manicotti, spaghetti with meat sauce, fettucini Alfredo and chicken parmigiana. Would definitely return.

Far exceeded expectations for a neighborhood restaurant that's been around for years. Still thinking about the excellent rolatini pescadore for only $14 and a generous garden salad was had for only $2 more. Great value, comfortable setting, service that's attentive without being intrusive. What more could you ask ?

We were very disappointed in this restaurant. We specifically asked if the pasta and gnocchi were homemade, and they assured us they were--which could not be further from the truth. The quality of the food was just plain bad. On a positive note, the service was much better than the food quality.

I definitely would not return here.
