La Palapa Ratings and Reviews
Sadly, the margaritas were practically undrinkable, and we ordered two different pitchers. I ordered a cocktail instead. Service was slow but friendly. Food was mediocre overall. Al pastor taco was the best. Fun atmosphere for a a group reservation, but the food and drinks were just not good.
THE FOOD: authentic, flavorful, delicious.
THE DRINKS: we tried jalapeño margaritas, one with mezcal, the other tequila, both CRAZY delicious and certified, spice-nut spicy. another had the frozen strawberry margarita before converting to the jala-mezcalarita, while our beer enthusiast enjoyed the authentic offerings.
THE NOISE: real loud on a Friday night, but the energy is infectious!
CONCLUSION: we will be returning for more! such a vibrant scene, friendly staff and de-LISH-ous offerings.
Made reservations for a group of 7 for Saturday brunch. 5 of us arrived on time and the hostess had no problem at all seating us without the rest of our party. Our waiter, Andrew, was courteous of our missing guests and offered to still get our bottomless drink orders in so that the drinks would arrive and the 1.5 hour clock would start around the time that the rest of our party arrived. He was very knowledgeable on the menu and an enthusiastic waiter who made our already enjoyable experience at La Palapa that much better.
We all got the Huevos Rancheros Verdes which I would strongly recommend. Strawberry frozen margaritas are amazing and Andrew made sure we were filled all throughout our meal! Definitely will be returning
Five of us shared a memorable Dia de Los Muertos feast at La Palapa. Every bite was delicious, the service was attentive and amiable, and The Best Margarita award is well deserved. Every visit to La Palapa is a sensory delight You can’t do better if “the real thing” is what you’re after. Kudos!
I hope this was an off night -- I've enjoyed La Palapa so much more on other occasions. I had forgotten how unpleasantly noisy it is on weekends, but it was the food that was disappointing -- the fish and shrimp were overcooked, and the quesadillas had sat for quite a while before they were served.
It has a great bar scene so would be fun for drinks and apps including a terrific guacamole. For group dining it is almost impossible to hear the people across the table. My wife had the tilapia which was drowning in a nondescript red sauce while I had the steak which was done perfectly and had a tangy jalapeño sauce that was quite tasty. Mahi mahi which was delivered to our table by accident and left at no charge was tastier than the tilapia by far. There are so many Mexican options in the city that I have a hard time justifying La Palapa as a restaurant that I would return to.
When I think about what characterizes a good Mexican restaurant, I think about the margaritas. Frankly, we were not impressed with the margaritas, and questioned whether they contained any tequila. The food is excellent, and everyone in my group enjoyed what they ordered. If you don't like really spicy food, you might ask about your order, as some of the sauces definitely had some heat to them. The service was disappointing, which I experienced on my first visit as well. This is certainly not my favorite Mexican restaurant, but I think it could be if they a bit more attention to the details.
Very accommodating of the changes I made in my reservation. Food is possibly more expensive than you might be used to paying for Mexican but it's totally worth it. Split some appetizers and get a couple of tacos for a less expensive meal. Overall delicious and friendly restaurant.
This was the worst restaurant I have been to since Hurricane Sandy (about 5 years ago when all the restaurants ran out of food).
We started with a pitcher of margaritas, which tasted like rail tequila combined with a powdered sugar mix such as Crystal Light or Tang (worst margarita I have ever had).
We also started with the guac, which should be a staple item for any Mexican restaurant. However, this tasted worse than something I would make at home. It was bland and just tasted like an avocado, not to mention the chips were stale and not warmed as a good Mexican restaurant might do.
I then ordered the chicken enchilada which was truly terrible. It tasted bland and worse than something I would buy at Duane Reade and pulled out of the microwave. Either that, or I was served wet tunafish covered in verde sauce.
Lastly, not only was the taste completely bad, but the presentation was equally as poor. I suppose that this is the type of food that hipster liberals in the East Village have become accustomed to and that's the real reason they are projecting their anger on the Trump administration.
Staff seemed overloaded and disorganized and somehow split up our reservation by accident? However they fixed it right away and were very kind/pleasant. Food is tasty - the guac is excellent. We were told the medium was a "spicy" medium but trust me it is not - don't be afraid to go for gold. Will return.
My daughter had happened upon the La Palapa stand at Vanderbilt Urbanspace location, and had delicious vegetarian tacos. Knowing how much my husband likes Mexican food, we made a reservation on the spot to at the St. Marks Place location for his birthday. We were really disappointed. Despite our reservation, we were seated beside the waiter station, which was both busy and crowded. The guacamole was delicious, but not worth $14.00. Our food was fine, but we were hoping for more than fine for a birthday dinner. Small portions and too much cheese. It was not worth the $100.00 price tag. We left sad, which put a damper on my husbands special day.
I had a great experience at La Palapa! I was there with a group of about 15 people for my best friend's birthday dinner. They were very accommodating, and our waiter was great. The food and drinks were outstanding. The chile relleno, guacamole, and pomegranate margaritas were particular standouts. I will absolutely be back!
