La Note Restaurant Provencal

We are season subscribers to Berkeley Rep and have been trying all the restaurants in the vicinity. To date, La Note has been our favorite. A 6:00 reservation was perfect to have dinner and walk to the show with no stress. The food was amazing; perhaps even better than most of the meals I had when spending time in France. We had the Bouillabaisse and Ratatouille, two classic french dishes, and they were both excellent. There were several other offerings on the menu that look intriguing so we will be back, soon.
Service was excellent. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and was attentative.
Excellent service and delicious food! A must try when in Berkeley! Dinner was exquisite!
Cozy venue with excellent, authentic French county cooking.
The Bouillabaise was outstanding - -very generous serving of fish and seafood in an excellent broth. And we chose the White Burgundy, which was a terrific accompanying wine. Our server was very accommodating; however, when we told her at 6:30pm that we had an 8:30 show to get to and asked specifically if we had enough time for the Bouillabaise, she indicated that it would take 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately we weren't served until nearly 7:10pm so we had to rush and didn't have time for dessert. But we'll be back -- the food was excellent!
Our waitress - student at Berkeley City College (do not know her name) - was absolutely outstanding. Give her a raise!
Our server was adorable. Attentive and swift. I would recommend La Note.
Excellent rustic french cuisine! Relaxed atmosphere. Live classical guitar. Attentive and friendly staff. We were content to enjoy it all and conversation among friends until we realized we might be late for the concert and had to hustle out. Staff was very helpful in this and not at all put off. Always happy to return here for the mussels, stew, and anything else!
This provincial French restaurant serves a delightful menu. The service can be a bit sleepy. However, the food is delicious. I had a puff pastry filed with seafood that surpassed my expectations.
A friend from my improvisation troupe and my daughter went there, coincidentally, on international women's day. Great food, service, conversation, ambience, and even the other diners were fun.
Perfect for a Valentine's day-after dinner! Less rushed than Valentine's Day itself would have been, and since I had to work Thursday night it was the perfect romantic, cozy spot for excellent Italian dining, complete with a terrific and yet not overwhelming accordian player!
Delightful bistro atmosphere. Full with pre-theatre crowd on a Friday night - servers and kitchen make sure we finish in time for curtain. Lovely green salad for 2 to share; beef Daube was not great but tasty; mussels were great. Wine list ok; the La Bastide Vacquerras was smooth but bland. Overall, La Note works well for pre -performance meal.
This is a charming small restaurant and it would feel like a European bistro if the noise level were managed better. Perhaps older buildings (much older!) absorb sound better. The food is classic French bistro fare done very well, service is good. I will continue to have it as a fall-back for Berkeley nights out as I have for many years, but not if I want to have much in the way of a conversation.
Being European I have been looking for a dinner place which reminded me of home. I have been to La Note for brunch and have always been extremely satisfied. However, dinner at this restaurant was an unforgettable experience! The service was excellent and my friend and I were not rushed at all while we were consuming our meals (like in Europe). The service and ambiance of the restaurant only made the delicious dinner even more enjoyable. I recommend this place 100% especially the warm goat cheese (starter) and the creme brûlée as a dessert!
Great food and great service. The salmon was melt in your mouth good.
I have been here many times and have never been disappointed. Start with the delicious bread! Every entry is fabulous.
We've been to La Note several times and always enjoyed it. This time, we sat in the window and split a wonderful bouillabaisse and salad nicoise. Both were very well prepared -- the bouillabaisse was particularly flavorful and full of seafood that had been cooked just the right amount. We also had "front row" seats for the accordion player who came in to play during the meal. And the wait staff were friendly, attentive and and knowledgeable. All in all, an outstanding dining experience.
A notable casual French cafe, with nice service, good food, and an inexpensive but nicely selected wine listed.
A very comfortable, low-key, good value, quality casual restaurant in downtown Berkeley.
La Note's breakfasts are excellent. Only one out of five dinners I have had there have been excellent, and that was the bouillabaisse. All the rest have been mediocre (mussels, crudite, lasagna, poullet).
We came for my wife's birthday. The fours of us, two adults, two teenagers has wonderful, authentic French Bistro fare. Everyone was delighted and satisfied with their meals.
The restaurant was closed when we arrived. Very inconvenient and unprofessional.
A quiet restaurant, with authentic down to earth French cuisine. Really tasty!
The food was mediocre at best, certainly not quality French food. Very little seasoning
Larger wine list, although house wine was good. Additional aperitifs would be fun.
Good provincial french cuisine. Layers of flavor in the food. Not too fancy, not overpriced for dinner. We were going to an event, so only had a glass of wine with the meal and it was a very generous pour of good quality wine. Excellent quality food that you just cannot get at many places even in the Bay Area. Staff is attentive without hovering. No complaints at all
We enjoyed our meal and the ambience of the restaurant. The food was fine, not outstanding, but good basic bistro fare. Our server was attentive.
I love La Note. Wonderful food and ambience for a great price. Will go again and again and again!!!
Enjoyed guitar music during delightful dinner!
Love it when they have either acoustic guitar or the accordion. La Note is one of my favorite restaurants in the bay. The food and service is always consistent. Portions are nice, greens salad with goat cheese delectable, and pasta always has such a homey but classic taste. Wine selection also solid.
Food is awesome, as usual. But the tables are just way too close to each other.
We enjoyed a luscious dinner before the theater. Both the service and food were great. House wine wasn’t good. Creme Brûlée and beef stew were lovely.
The food was OK, except the carbonara sauce - too thick with pieces of egg, it wasn't consistent. Tasted like an undercooked, congealed omelette on pasta. I hope they can improve this dish, otherwise a good place to eat, but we won't be returning.
Food was very good. We were hoping the patio would be open at night but it wasn't. There was a shade that needs to be fixed so the light was in my eyes. We shared crostini with olive tapenade and eggplant. We also shared crudités of various salads. I had the puff pastry with seafood. My husband had bouillabaisse. He enjoyed it very much but it did require some work. It came out in a glass salad bowl and the crab took up a bunch of space. It would have been a little easier to eat had it been in a large wide bowl. But again the flavor was excellent. We were too full for dessert. The place has an authentic French bistro vibe.
Several tempting dinners on the menu but I just cannot pass up an opportunity to enjoy their ratatouille. And now topped with salmon – my two favorite dinners are available here as one entrée. With a salad and a carafe of their house red, it was one of those rare meals I just didn’t want to end.
Good but not great. Not a great value. Authentic menu, but so-so execution.
Mediocre food at dinner. I’d heard great things about th breakfast menu and was very disappointed with the curry chicken.
Romantic birthday celebration. Had a seat by the window which was perfect for the occasion. My favorite restaurant in Berkeley that maintains its charm.
Wanted a laid back casual dinner. Nicely done French comfort food. Too much pasta on the menu and not enough other bistro standards, but generally satisfying.
We never made it having a meal since when seated, there was a notice on the table advising us that La Note is charging a MANDATORY 20% service fee/tip.
Nobody is telling me how much I have to tip! I tip on performance, not ahead of time.
The story that the waiter/waitresses are depending on the tips of the consumers, is a bit obsolete: the authorities have mandatory upgraded their wages and a lot of restaurants are also contributing to health insurance (in some cases also by the authorities which is now reflected in the bill as an added tax!), so increased salaries plus mandatory increased (20%!) tips is double and therefore overdone.
