La Mezzaluna Ratings and Reviews
First time at this restaurant...We love Princeton, and was looking for something different- needed pre-Theater for me and my teen-age children. Didn't want to spend a fortune, but wanted gourmet. Wow! The food was top-notch delicious. Far better than Theresa's. My son's Chicken Marinara dish was outstanding...melt in your mouth. My daughter's risotto dish was incredible. Appetizers were top-notch. Portions were great. Service was quite excellent. Even the bus-boys looked impeccable & classy - were super polite and attentive. The place could use some ambiance...but I was quite impressed with the food, the value and friendly, team-effort, professional, elegant staff.
restaurant was a no show. The restaurant said it closes at 9 PM but open table accepted a 9:15 reservation. It was our anniversary and we were looking forward to a nice evening. Now it was late and the restaurant was open but no longer seating customers. They did recommend another restaurant but until we got there , we were unsure that they were open and had room for us. Very disappointing experience through open table and the restaurant.
The restaurant said they had informed open table of the hours during the week were different than weekends.
My first time at La Mezzaluna was a treat. My office had our holiday lunch here last Friday. The service was excellent and the food delicious. I had the pumpkin ravioli and the special chicken and sausage risotto. Both outstanding. My co-worked enjoyed their meals as well, especially the seafood risotto and the special stuffed portobella mushroom.
I highly recommend.
We have been eating at La Mezzaluna for over 10 years. One of our favorite places to eat in Princeton. This night, we brought friends from out of town. Our past experiences had me expecting a 5 star experience, but tonight, not so much. Overall, given our company and wine we bought, it was an almost terrific evening:
1) We were seated for our reservation time immediately and at the type of table we requested
2) The menu/specials presented many excellent options
3) The ambience is excellent
Our issues with this visit (which has never happened in 10 years) surrounded our service:
1) Our waiter struggled with opening the wine and broke our cork, it can happen to the best of us, the issue... he spent all of the time opening the bottle COMPLAINING to us about his corkscrew and telling some tall tale about how his was at home and they don't have one here at the restaurant, etc, etc - very unprofessional
2) I am gluten free - one of the reason's we love it is because they understand and have always treated me with care. This time, despite me including it in our reservation, telling the waiter, asking for confirmation about what I was ordering, he DID NOT PAY ATTENTION and brought my salad with croutons. I immediately let him know and another waiter overheard and said 'she's allergic, you must make her a new one, not just take the croutons off'. Sure enough, he brought back the salad and had only taken the croutons off - it was not freshly remade (crumbs on the plate). DANGEROUS.
3) Water - glass were never filled. It took us multiple requests to get our glass refilled and waited over half our meal for it to happen.
4) Finally - the portion sizes seem to have shrunk while the prices have gone up. The food is always EXCELLENT - no complaints there, but at $25 for a basic risotto, there should be more than 1 cup on the plate..
Our luck drew a bad waiter, it happens - but should not at this restaurant, in this town, on this night, and for this cost.
We enjoyed our Thanksgiving 2017 meal at the intimate , local restaurant. The food is always delicious (as we are regulars) the servers (eapecially William) are thoughtful and courteous and it is BYOB - with a great wine store conveniently located right next door! It is a little, Princeton treasure!!
A table in the front window was pleasant and quiet. All the staff are very attentive, and good-natured. They know their menu and make helpful suggestions. The calamari as appetizer, shared for 2, was reliably tasty. Trenette with eggplant, fresh tomatoes, basil, mozzarella was fresh and light and deliciously spiced.
On our many previous visits, the service was very efficient and attentive. On this night, however, the restaurant seemed understaffed. We had long waits between courses, and just barely got our coffees and cappuccinos before we had to leave for a performance. This despite having left 90 minutes ++ for dinner, and having alerted our waiter when we arrived that we had a time certain departure.
Excellent flavors. My wife had the veal chop special. Done perfectly. I had the pork Osso Bucco on a bed of risotto and was phenomenal. Our primi piatti was a shared order of papardelle with wild boar ragout that was very tasty. Service was friendly and attentive.
The most classic Italian Restaurant in Princeton. The menu is always new and fresh. The waiter, Willie, is outstanding. To top it all, Chef Michael Moriello if he’s around, would get out of his way to come to your table to acknowledge you and your guests. This is classic beyond classic.
Not the greatest experience. We got attended by 3 different servers and there was miss communication starting with our drinks. They read off a million specials for the night which should have been our clue not to order that. The fish that we ordered was not what we were told it would be and on top of that came out raw. Only positive out of this experience was that the pasta was good. Very unorganized - not worth the hassle. There are better Italian places in the area- will not be coming back.
Gluten free pasta available - always a great plus for my husband. The four cheese risotto was very rich and my daughter described the cheese combo as "weird" though okay. I loved the special (Flounder Francese) with shrimp and bruschetta over spinach. My husband described the boar topping as "ordinary" but he enjoyed his meal. Fourth entree was eaten completely but I didn't get feedback (vegetarian risotto). Caprese salad was ordinary but that is ordinary in a good way (balsamic reduction so not soupy and plenty of basil). Lots of items and lots of ingredients, perhaps a simplification would be helpful here, but they are trying to be creative (or the chef is very energetic). Service was solid - water refilled into soda glasses by a busboy at one point but best to have plenty to drink than not. BYOB and there is a liquor store next door if you forget.
We had a lot of fun. Our waiter was a real personality, a funny guy and quite efficient. I thought the food was fine but not outstanding. The Caesar dressing was more like a creamy italian, not a real Caesar and my veal ossobuco was quite tough. Because the overall experience was fun and nice and the service was good, I'd go back. I just wouldn't go running for the food.
Dinner here on Saturday October 14, 2017. Seated quickly with reservations. Started with Appy special crab ball, shrimp ball, lobster ball with dipping sauce. Also meatball appy.
Meals were a Chicken Dish and the gnocchi Bolognese off menu. Very good and flavorful.
Desserts were Crème Brulee and Tiramisu which was especially delicious. Waiters were attentive and courteous. Atmosphere is lovely. Parking can be tough in Princeton at any time.
Would definitely go back again and highly recommend.
