I have heard for years (30+) about LaMere Michelle in Saratoga. My husband and I decided to give it a try for our anniversary. It was mid-week. Our first clue should have been when we noticed the parking lot was empty. It was extremely disappointing from the minute we walked in the door. There is no hostess; all you see are darkened dining rooms that are not being used as you enter a dark entry. You can't even see the kitchen. You have to find a waiter to seat you. When we walked in, the only other couple in the dining room laughing announced "We've been waiting for you!" i.e., the place was empty. My husband ordered a Cosmo. The waiter (no bartender) made it with what tasted like lemons - not limes. The waiter insisted they were limes; he brought them to the table to show us that they were still yellow. They were not a ripe lime color. I ordered the Wedge Salad; a 5 year old could have made it blindfolded. No crumbled blue cheese or no hardboiled egg consistent with a true Wedge Salad, just store bought dressing, bacon bits and iceberg lettuce. I ordered the crab cakes. One side was burned, the other was not. They were served burned side up. They were mushy. My husband ordered the duck. No big deal. Waste of a good duck. The vegetables were plain, overcooked, and mushy. We ordered the red velvet cake for dessert. It was dry. We assessed it was several days old. I sat next to a row of potted geraniums. They were dry looking, scant, and almost dead. A row of bright red, silk geraniums would have looked beautiful. Our table had old, ragged plastic place-mats on top of a white table cloth. My husband removed his place-mat only to find gravy stains underneath; disgusting. We paid and exited back through the empty dark entry. No one said 'thank you' or 'have a nice evening'... nothing. But our waiter was very kind, thoughtful and efficient. I felt sorry for him trying to make a living in such a tired looking old restaurant that offers over-priced, subpar food.

Adore this restaurant and if I could, would eat here weekly! Love atmosphere and the marvelous owner, Michelle, who greets everyone as if lifetime friends. Maurice, the server and bartender, is a gem. There is no other place like this in the Bay Area. A landmark.

I took my boys here because they wanted to stroll along downtown Saratoga and. have French food. The food was good. The ambiance is perfect for a warm Sunday evening, open but cozy and quiet. Love the old homey atmosphere. The waiter was the best! Service was excellent.

Went there for Bastille Day hoping for a festive evening. It was empty and no enthusiasm or acknowledgement of the 14th of July. However, the food was very good and the service polite. Corkage fee was $30 which seemed higher than most other restaurants. Their wine list did not appear to be of high quality. However, the ambiance was very nice. The windows were open overlooking garden boxes with Geraniums and downtown Saratoga. Overall a very pleasant dining experience.

Went here for valentines day and it was a terrible experience. When walked in some couple stormed out saying it was terrible, we should have done the same. We had reservations but still took a while to sit us. Staff would just walk by us and not even say a word, like we will be right with you. Service was also terrible, waiter basically ignored us the whole night. Water cup was empty for a while and no one even stopped by to refill. Food was also cold and terrible. My girl friend ordered soup and it was cold and tasteless when we got it. I ordered steak and it was undercooked, luckily I am ok with eating a little more rare. I was not given a steak knife to cut my steak, the waiter told me that the butter knife I had was sharp enough. Who gives you a butter knife for a steak? The couple next to us also ordered steak and he also had to return their steak for being so raw. I will never return to this place, it is terrible and dont know how it can survive in Saratoga next to all the other good restaurants.

Went for valentines day. Took 15 minutes to be seated. Another 20 minutes to get a cocktail. Waiter kept bringing wrong food to our table. Two full hours after we arrived before we got our main course. We skipped dessert even though it was included in the prix fixe menu. Couldn't wait to get out of the place. I should have read and believed the other negative reviews. Be warned.

Unfortunately at 6PM we were the only people in the restaurant and the heat was turn down. I needed to keep my coat on to keep warm. 1 hr later was not any warmer...

The soup was just Ok and the entree was average... so the prices seemed high for what we got... Very disappointing considering it was a special occasion.

There were four of us, with differing views on various parts of the meal. That makes it a little challenging. I'll try to share some of those different opinions, while still being concise. First, we all liked the "more classic" decor. Some call it dated. We decided it's classic, and has nice touches of a Paris restaurant, including chandeliers, artwork, music, furniture, multiple, smaller rooms so its quiet. We had a variety of appetizers. The snails were a winner. The prawns and mushrooms were good I'd say. The apple and endive salad was very good. One person thought the french onion soup was very good. A few thought the vegetables were a tad soft (overcooked). The bone in rib-eye with mushroom sauce was very good, but not the best we have had. It's big - 20 oz, so my wife and I split it. And we still brought a good amount home, since we had so many appetizers. The Filet Mignon was very good. Big, thick, not fatty, lovely cut of beef. The bread was delicious. They had trouble keeping up with our demand for more bread! Oh, my wife ordered the pate's. Very good, especially on the tasty bread. 3 Grand Marnier Souffles for dessert. All 3 looked fantastic as they arrived, sitting way up firm and high (to quote Bob Seger!). I liked it, but it has been a long time since I've had one, so I can't compare. The other two thought it was "too eggy, too, light, too fluffy". I could see that. The sauce was great. Service was also very good....but it better have been. We were the only ones there on a stormy evening! Oh - we brought a bottle of wine, which was fantastic. We ordered a 2nd half bottle - Clos du Val Cab. It suffered in comparison with the $20 bottle we brought. But our options were limited with a 375ml bottle. Bottom line: Solid 4. Price corresponds to a 4. We will return.

We reserved this place just for a nice New Year eve dinner. We love a few items on the menu and would like to try it. However, when we got there, we learned that there is a fix menu for the New Year eve. Some of the items we love were not on the list. Since we were there and we did not want to spoil the fun of New Year eve, we decided to stay. I wish Open Table should inform reader about this special occasion so that we do not get a surprise.

La Mere Michelle is one of our favorite places to visit in Saratoga! The wait staff is very friendly and personable, and they pay attention to all of the small details that elevates a dining experience to truly great.

We started the night with seared foie gras, an appetizer they don't have very often. After sampling it, I can see why! The foie gras is lightly seared and place on toasted, crusty bread, then buried under onions sauteed in balsamic vinegar. The onions are the true star of this dish, carrying a bright and sweet counter-balance to the earthy foie gras and crunchy bread.

For my entree, I had the 8 oz. filet mignon. I ordered it medium rare, but it arrived quite rare -- I didn't mind that, though. The filet was much thicker than I've seen at other places, and so, so tender. The cognac peppercorn sauce was rich and flavorful, a perfect complement to meat that was seared just so on the outside and wonderfully tender inside. The steak had seasonal vegetables on the side (with maple-glazed carrots) and potatoes au gratin -- both were amazing!

My friends had roasted duck and pork chops (a special) which were both excellent; the duck was accompanied with a cherry sauce that brightened the dish nicely, and the pork chops were delicious and surprisingly tender.

For dessert, we had a lemon cake that was just the right amount of sweet and tart, and a perfect size and richness for sharing.

The ambience is great, though if you're used to ultra-polished California restaurants you might be disappointed. The space definitely shows its age, but I think it adds to the charm of the experience rather than diminishes it. We went on Friday evening, and there were only a few other guests with us. It's quiet, cozy and welcoming.

Overall, La Mere Michelle is a bit on the pricy side; expect to spend $40 for your entree and about $20 for appetizers. Their wine list is expansive and tempting, but not for those on a strict budget (like me). Still, it is a great place!

Outstanding! Each year we take our visiting family to a special holiday, and everyone agreed La Mere Michelle was the BEST meal in the last 20 years. The food, service, and ambiance were exceptional and unmatched in the South Bay. With a party of 9 and allergy food restrictions, the owners made us feel special and part of their family. Every bite was delightful and the chef came out to great us as we left this gem in Saratoga. We will be back!! We can't recommend this enough.

This is a restaurant caught between the past and the future. It has dated decor and menus that don't match the technology that everyone is using nowadays (Open Table, Yelp, mobile phones). I took my daughter there for her birthday and I would've expected a bit of a French dining experience, but instead got the dining experience of a regular restaurant (with excellent waiter service) and the French-styled food. I enjoyed the food immensely and my daughter enjoyed the attention they gave her for her birthday. Special thanks to the chef for a great meal.

Service was excellent! We've been here before, but it had been a while. I came with my father-in-law who has frequented here for decades. As we were looking over the menu, our server leaned into my father-in-law and gently asked if he wanted a certain glass of wine. He looked up and replied 'yes'. As our server walked away, I asked my father-in-law "Boy, that's impressive, he knew the wine you wanted. Were you here recently?" He told me it had been some time. Later, our server recited the exact items my father-in-law ordered last time, asking if he'd like the same. Ironically, on the drive to the restaurant, he shared with me what he ordered last time he was there. Overall, very impressive to have an establishment and team that remembers things to such details for a senior citizen who likes to frequent places with great service and food. This is why La Mere Michelle is his favorite restaurant! I can see why. La Mere Michelle is a must for a fine dining experience.

This place is okay. But probably believes it is amazing. The food did not taste like they had made it that day. It was cold. And the actual building smells old and moldy. If this place was prices lower I would say okay it is worth it, but paying 30 dollars for a plate I should get better quality.

La Mere Michelle is perfect for a quiet, non rushed dinner. Do not go if you need to be somewhere at a certain time or if you are looking for a hip place to be. The decor has not been updated in at least 15 - 20 years, but is clean and quaint. We went on a Friday night and they only had the front room open and one waiter. He was delightful and let you know if you were ordering something that was not good by suggesting something else.

An old time favorite in Old Town Saratoga. The baked brie with apricots was delicious. The French onion soup was very traditional and good. The lamb chops with demi-glaze was also excellent. Too full for desert. The wine selection was good. The entire preparation and delivery is personally supervised by the French proprietor, and she demands excellence.

This place is amazing! It is so old world and romantic. The menu offers what I like it - most traditional and delicious! The escargots were prepared the way I like them - loaded with just enough garlic accompanied by lots of bread to sop up the tasty sauce. They were just the way I had them at a French French restaurant in Boston 45 years ago! Everything else was just as good. Our server, Maurice, was perfection. He was on the spot when we wanted him to bring us drinks, food, etc. He is one of the reasons I want to go back! The chef, Mark, introduced himself. And the incredible owner, Michelle, was there to greet us. This place rates and eleven on a scale of 10!
