La Mer at Halekulani Ratings and Reviews
Food as art. Each dish was superb and served like expertly crafted pieces of art. Many delicious flavors in each bite. The foie gras was perfectly prepared with a little Hawaiian twist. Ceviche also wonderful with subtle fennel flavor. Lovely wines by the glass. Vanilla soufflé was gorgeous and comes with 3 different flavors of sauce and cocoa nibs. Service is impeccable. Our table was looking out over the ocean, and could watch the Hawaiian singers and dance, as well as the many weddings and family celebrations. A truly incredible and magical evening.
If you are able, ask for Dan to be your waiter. I have dined at some very special restaurants around the world, and I have to say that Dan is the finest waiter I have ever had the pleasure of dining with. He has been at La Mer for 33 years and is a most special asset for the restaurant. Food was impeccable, ambience is old Hawaii, and priceless. Dan made the entire experience without equal.
La Mer is a high end restaurant located in the Halekulani Hotel, right on the water. At sunset, the view is fantastic! The service is top notch, as it should be for a restaurant of this caliber. The food is prepared and presented beautifully. Even from the start with three different breads, so soft and tasty. There were four of us, so we were able to sample many dishes. I am no expert, but this has to be one of the top 5-star restaurants in Honolulu. Be prepared to pay for food and service of this quality. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.
We are so happy that we picked this restaurant while on our stay on the hawian Islands.
We traveled from Kauai to Maui to the big island and then Oahu, let me tell you this was by far the best restaurant and food during our entire stay in Hawaii period.
We had the chefs tasting menu and it was superb in every way possible, the fois Gras was out of this world good and the steak unreal flavor that will satisfy any Carnavor out there.
If at Waikiki Beach area and want a special dinner you must book this place , reservations are a must they are booked al ost every night.
Wonderful, as usual. We have been going to La Mer for a number of years and it never fails to disappoint us. It rightfully is considered the best restaurant in Hawaii. The ambiance, the food, and the service remain outstanding. Highlights included the foie gras appetizer; the various entrees (lamb, beef and fish), and two desserts (the coconut cake and the souffle). My wife said that this was one of the best meals of our lives (we have been married more than 40 years and have dined in fine restaurants around the world). We had flown over from Maui and were eating dinner at La Mer with our friends from California who had never been there before. One of them stated afterward that the experience "belonged to a bygone time". It truly does.... one feels they are in an elegant movie from the 1940s or 1950s!
The food, service and atmosphere at La Mer was delightful and exceptional. The restaurant itself does not host live music, but it is situated above another restaurant that does, so you get the ambiance of live music in the background (very chic!)
My only complaint was that when we inquired about the Gustation experience, our waiters described it as being, "...for both of you", which I took to mean that the pricing for this option was based on a 'dinner for two' concept, which turned out not to be the case. I would recommend they print 'per person' on the menu next to the price to avoid such confusion in the future.
Overall we had a good experience at La Mer, however, we felt that it was overpriced. The food was good, but not great.
Also, we had an issue with the bottle of wine that we ordered. I had pointed to particular bottle on the menu, and we were brought a different, more expensive bottle. Not realizing this initially, we drank the wine. The waiter was insistent that we ordered the one he gave us, and charged us accordingly. I believe he did this purposely. Also, they automatically added significant gratuity to our bill, so be aware of this.
We had a fantastic dining experience here. Wait staff was super attentive and even though we did not get the prime window spot facing diamond head at first, we were promptly offered the opportunity to move when it became available. The chefs menu was also nicely created with a fine balance of my favorite shellfish, foie, cheeses, sweets, and meats. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion or fine dining experience out in the islands.
If you enjoy fine French food, this is probably the best option available in Waikiki. The food is exceptional, although portions are small. The wine list is excellent, too, with a good selection of French as well as New World options. The restaurant is waterfront, but it is not noisy at all so it is the perfect spot for a quiet romantic dinner.
A welcome was handed down from the correspondence of the reception fantastically. It was very delicious for delicate taste. It was made one one carefully, and a feeling came. Each staff called out to you and was able to be relaxed very much.I want to go by all means in the next year that was the best restaurant full of the dignity.
Our special occasion was our last night in Honolulu and we wanted to revisit La Mer from several years previous. We arrived early and asked for an ocean front seating, which did not disappoint.
Our friendly wait staff, both long time employees, treated us royally. From the specialty cocktails until the last few bites of dessert, we felt well taken care of. The restaurant offers a tasting menu or a 3 course meal from any where on the menu, just one of the items has to be dessert. This suited our appetites so we chose scallop carpaccio and foie gras for our appetizers and local abalone and filet mignon for our mains. The abalone had a texture like giant clam, geoduck, a bit chewy but in a tasty prosciutto cream and foam. Foie gras showed up with the
filet too. Our desserts were a cheese board - choose as much as you want - and a vanilla souffle. Both desserts were a wonderful play off each other.
We chose our own Oregon pinot noir, not the pairings, plus port and calvados with the sweets.
We really love this restaurant, wish we could come back more often, but we'd have to win the lottery.
Having been to France and dining in the big cities from Los Angeles to New York it was an excellent dining experience from appetizers, to main course, to dessert. Although we didn't have any, they had a very large wine selection. We stuck to the cocktails and they were well presented and very good. Service was top notch, accommodating, and very professional. Highly recommend for a birthday or anniversary, you won't be disappointed.
