We had an absolutely wonderful experience. My French husband loved the coq au vin. I had the duck which wasn't crispy 'laque' like I've had in the past, but was cooked to rosy perfection and very good quality. The food and wine were spectacular and the setting had a lot of personality and warmth. Service was up to par.
I have been to La Marmotte three times over the past few years (once each year since 2015). Our first meal there in 2015 was fantastic. Each subsequent visit has been increasingly disappointing, however. This most recent visit was just plain bad. The entrees (pork and lamb) were both flavored with the same over-salted au jus. The lamb was not prepared well. It tasted like (and had the texture) of boiled meat. I don't know what has changed (if anything) in the last couple years or if we just got them on a couple bad nights the last couple of times, but La Marmotte is no longer a given when we visit Telluride.
Ordered a spaghetti squash dish for my daughter and when brought out, it was clear someone in the kitchen thought they could get away with covering up a tablespoon of the feature ingredient under a mound of quinoa. When brought to one of the server's attention, he apologized and offered to bring out a side of the spaghetti squash. He came back empty handed as they had run out. The way this was handled lacked integrity and spoiled a family dinner. Have been going to La Marmot for years and that was the last time as there are too many other choices.
In the past (years ago) this was one of our favorite restaurants in Telluride. Since then it has changed ownership and chefs. All fine dining restaurants in Telluride are pricey,this is no exception. We are from Charleston, SC, where we are fortunate to have some really excellent restaurants, so we have high standards. The items that we had are not what is shown on the online menus, as they are typically not up to date online. Our waiter was excellent!
We shared a seared sea scallop appetizer, which was fine, but nothing special. The scallops would have had a better flavor if there had been more of a hard sear on them, which helps bring out the sweetness.
For entrees we had the filet of beef and the duck. The filet had been ordered medium rare. For some reason, they chose to cut the filet in half horizontally, making it into 2 thinner pieces of meat. Since the meat was now thin, they did not get a good hot sear on the outside and maintain a medium rare temperature, thus it was medium instead. The sauce and side items were good.
The duck was good, but not spectacular. I ordered it medium rare, but it was medium. One of the best things about good duck breast is having the skin on top crispy and the underlying fat like butter that melts in your mouth. This duck had a very mildly crispy skin layer. I felt that the currant sauce was quite thin and somewhat watery. The side items (green beans and squash) very close to raw.
I don't remember the names of our cocktails, pricey at $15 each, but were delicious.
My husband LOVED his dessert of an apple crisp with fig ice cream. I had a fairly run of the mill flourless chocolate cake.
So, a good meal, not a great one. If you are NOT a "foodie", you would probably find it to be very good. If you are into the details, you are likely to not be overly happy with the meal. Or perhaps we got them on an off night, our last experience there was of a similar nature. So, I don't think we will return soon.
Short and to the point and SUPER HONEST.... food is very good but portions are small like almost every high-end restaurant, you spend $150-200 for party of 2 and you're hungry again 2 hours later. The bar seats about 8 people at the most so if you have to wait for a table, you're going to be standing and hoping they serve you a drink while you wait. Suggest reservations if you decide to go. The bartender on duty at the time was not terribly friendly, on the slow side, and lacked any form of a smile. To her credit though, she got a little better as the minutes wore on. The atmosphere is uncomfortably stuffy and the tables so close to one another that servers have to squeeze between seats to serve, and you have to whisper so people at the next table can't hear your conversation. Service was slow for a place so small and so expensive. Overall, I would not recommend and will not return. If you do go, get their cheesecake for dessert, ask for extra berry sauce on top and don't share. Get your date her own slice because it's that good!
They used quality ingredients on both dishes, a lamb shank and a flank steak. The shank was better than the flank as an overall dish. The flank itself was cooked right, tender if a bit light on flavor, and it needed salt and pepper, and it took a while once the server left to get her back to get it, so the meat was cooling. My main issue was the sauce, which was too liquidy, insufficiently reduced, and tasted like bacon fat had gotten into it, and which I tilted off as best I could to separate it from the meat. The wasabi mashed potatoes were fine, as were a few slices of squash. Bread came as 1/3 of a baguette sliced up and spread as if to make it look like more. Those dishes, plus a $44 Bordeaux and a (very good) chocolate torte desert, brought the bill to $148 with tax and tip, which seemed like a lot for what we got.
La Marmotte had good food, service, and ambiance. Evidently it is very popular, but we lucked out and went on a very quiet night, which we enjoyed. The atmosphere was very warm and the servers were very attentive and informed about the menu. All three of us enjoyed our meals, which were well-cooked, but not amazingly creative. If you are in the mood for French food in Telluride, I highly recommend it.
This is my favorite restaurant in Telluride. It really has the atmosphere of a French bistro which extends to the menu. Service is very attentive, and they have always worked around my wife's gluten sensitivity. It can get a bit noisy when groups with unrestrained exuberance are present.
The setting was perfect. We ate in the dining room but somewhat regretted not taking advantage of the bar seating (and their happy hour specials). Service was excellent and not over-the-top, making it a relaxing dining experience. I had a beautiful arugula-stuffed pork tenderloin with risotto. I tried my husband's coq au vin, and it was to die for--so savory! The wine list was interesting, with some good value French wines. Very aware of gluten-free restrictions. I am celiac and had no issues. Would go back again!
La Marmotte never fails. Lovely atmosphere for an anniversary or birthday celebration, or just a quiet evening out. The service and the food is always great! Had the beet salad which was fresh, and well dressed, and the Coq au Vin, which melted in my mouth!
Family gathering of 10. Two anniversaries in the group. Everything was good, not quite exceptional. Wait for deserts was excessive, although we were not in a hurry the delay was noticeable enough to be annoying. Service was cordial but not quite as attentive as the best. Food was all tasty, nicely presented and prices are reasonable . The short wine list is heavy on some pricey, unfamiliar, entries. But the Sangiovese we selected was good, and reasonably priced (for a restaurant).
La Marmoote was a disappointment. The service was very good and friendly. The food was average at best, and frankly poor for the price. The tartare was under seasoned with tough chunks that were too big. Mussels were over cooked, Coq au Vin was dry, short ribs that ate like beef chuck pot roast, and stuffed chicken breast was bland.
Maybe they are a better happy hour bar spot.
To be fair, outside of Allred's and casual pizza and taco joints, most Telluride spots are highly priced mediocre food.
They knew it was the 4th holiday but unlike other restaurants in telluride - they do not staff up - just a part time busboy would have made a big difference - they would be better off limiting the crowd and keeping service at a higher level

What a fabulous evening! Great woody atmosphere (although there is beautiful outdoor and cozy bar seating) ands semi open kitchen! My husband started with a bacon leek tart and he almost licked the plate. They had an oyster special the night we were there and I indulged in a bunch (9) of them. They were amazingly sweet and when I requested cocktail sauce rather than the now usual mignonette sauce, they were happy to make some for me! I had the tenderloin for dinner cooked to my exacting specifications. Yummy. My husband had short ribs that were "melt in your mouth"! If that wasn't decadent enough, we shared chocolate mousse for dessert. Handcrafted cocktails and a good scotch selection rounded out a spectacular meal. They have a bistro menu that we've never tried but their regular always changing menu although pricy but so worth every cent!
My husband and I were in Telluride for a wedding, our first time to the town. We are from the Metro NY area and are big "foodies". We always seek out the best fine dining when we travel and your restaurant got our attention. We were very pleased with our experience. The most important component to our evening there was the food and it was VERY good. My husband had the duck, I had the scallops. Both cooked beautifully. We were a little disappointed with one of the sides, red cabbage and my husband felt the portion of mashed potato was too little. Our waiter was polite and serviced us well but we thought he could have been a little more attentive. It wasn't that busy either. The dessert special was the only thing that both of us were disappointed with - blueberry bread pudding. It wasn't warm enough, lacked flavor and so did the ice cream that accompanied it (pistachio). Overall, a wonder experience for a romantic dinner. I would recommend it for sure. Thank you!!!
