La Lanterna Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
La Laterna is definitely a neighborhood gem. Tucked away on 25th Avenue in San Mateo. Decorated with lights and a cozy feeling walking in. This restaurant also has cute booths for a more romantic dinner atmosphere. The food is fabulous. The bread is terrible. They really do need to upgrade their bread. Everything was great. The service is good especially for a very busy New Years Eve. Definitely a recommend!
We have dined here many times. This visit the food was good as always, but service was not as usual. We arrived for a Friday 7:30 reservation and were seated on time. The tables were all taken so they were very busy, but service was very slow. After waiting about twenty minutes to order every course arrived slowly. We had to ask for the first bread basket and never got water refills. We will come back, but will arrive before 6:00.
This restaurant exceeds expectations all around. The food is fabulous. I'm normally a small eater and I cleaned my plate. The bread was hot, crusty French bread. The menu changed from last time we dined there and their specials are over the top!!! I've dined in Paris and New York. You won't be disappointed!!!!
La Lanterna is on of our favorite restaurants. The service is friendly and helpful, and willing to make accommodations to the menu. Their risotto is one of my favorites, and the calamari dorati is my husband's. The specials are always a treat, as are their desserts.
The ambiance was really nice and since the reviews had been very favorable we were excited. Much to our disappointment the food was underwhelming. The calamari fritti were over cooked and salty, the main course, the veal piccata for me and the pollo florentine for my boyfriend, tasted just ok. The service was also suprisingly lame. The waiter, however sweet, did not write down any of our orders and had to come back to the table to ask me again what I had ordered. To sum it all up, the dining experience was not bad but we won't be coming back.
Recommended that we try it; all of us were from out of town. Thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals! The fruit de mar was the best I have ever eatten; Mista salad wonderfully well prepared. And more than enough for the two of us to share. Other meals by friends equally well enjoyed and more than plentiful. Menu is varied with excellent choices for everyone. We will return!
I had high expectations from this restaurant based on the online reviews from this site. Very disappointed. Service on a Sunday early evening was extremely slow. It took more than 30 minutes for our appetizers to be served, and HOUR for our entrees. Not sure if I will recommend, or if we are coming back.
As usual every thing was perfect. Service - food was hot and very tasty - we shared the beet and pare salad = entree was sirloin of Lamb with a delicious gravy - and of course the trip petite desert. Sunday evening and the tables were full by the time we left, so be sure and make reservations when you go.
Unfortunately, after reading other reviews, my experience did not match up.
I will say that my high-quality Italian food experiences have been in Chicago and New York City and I realize the cuisine from the East Coast might be different from the West Coast; with that being said the fresh mozzarella in the salad was more the texture of ricotta, my pork medallions tasted of fish and the ice tea was very weak. I was given a dessert because I was dissatisfied with my pork but it to was under par.
We learned about this restaurant from an Italian that has been coming to this restaurant for yers at my salon. We decided to give it a try for my husband's birthday. Food (especially the home made pastas and specials) was delicious, service was delightful and accommodating. There wasn't much not to like. I would definitely come back here for a date night with my husband and sit outside.
This was not my first choice but everyone in the party enjoyed the food. It was a birthday celebration and although I had indicated this in my Open Table reservation, I needed to ask several times - they kept asking us if we wanted dessert and did not seem to know it was a birthday even though I told the hostess earlier. Food was good! I am not sure I will return anytime soon. The restaurant was busy and quite crowded so that is probably why the service was not great.
Every time I go to La Lanturna the food is always tasty and plentiful. Cocktails are made just right the first time; don't have to send them back for further adjustments. The wait staff and bus staff are efficient and friendly. You are able to have an intimate conversation with your table guests. Meal presentation is enticing and pleasing to the eye. Over all, a most enjoyable experience.
I started the Caprese which was fantastic, then the Chicken Parm. I am typically hard to please but was very happy with both. The only downside was that the bread was "meh". Since that's something everyone has, I would have thought it would have been better; it wasn't real crusty, and the inside crumb was like Wonderbread.
The restaurant was welcoming and not too big. The food and service were good, but I was disappointed that they did not wish us a "Happy Anniversary". It was on our reservation. Also, we were seated in a booth that's lighting was such that I couldn't see my husband. He was back-lit by the outside light making him a dark shadow.
