Great food. Attentive service. Definitely a must-try.
It was a very good evening, good service, good food , although I would you to request you add some vegetarian appetizers , and some vegetarian soups, thank you for making our special day celebration really fun!!
La Grotta's staff was friendly, knowledgeable with great service. We had wonderful fresh authentic Italian cuisine. I miss the ambiance of the original La Grotta location but this dining room is handsome, taking advantage of the huge Miller & Rhoads windows facing Broad, letting in sunlight and city life. Saturday night, 7 pm, the Hilton valet lot was full as well as the lot across the street and 2 garages. We parallel parked 3 blocks away which was a nice after dinner walk on a mild June evening in downtown RVA.
Favorite spot in town. Entire experience from service to food quality is nothing short of amazing.
I have been frequenting this restaurant for years, and the strawberry grand marnier cake is always, always fantastic!! I did prefer the old location for its ambiance and uniqueness, but time changes everything. The salads are large enough to share--the specials are usually worth considering--and my favorite, the linguine with clams is no longer on the menu :( I'll keep coming back because it never disappoints!
I've been dining here for decades and LOVE IT! Owner-Chef Tony Capece makes all dishes from scratch (including the pasta and deserts), and la Grotta has been my top choice for years. In fact, I travel a great deal internationally, and La Grotta ranks among my favorites globally. His daily features are always a winner and represent what he is inspired to create that day in addition to the standing menu items. An immigrant from the Piedmont Region of Italy, Tony's dishes are true to his heritage and also show his creative skills as he personalizes the dishes. A Wine Spectator winning restaurant, I suggest no matter how knowledgeable you are about wine, ask staff for Tony's recommendations to pair with your selections--this final touch will enable you to truly appreciate what he wants you to experience with his cuisine. And Andrea Capece (Tony's wife) always adds a warm and gracious welcome as you enter. Such a jewel in Richmond and worth a drive to get there.
So you book thru open table and get no points....just a notice that you were “seated”. Come on. ....
Thanks to Lisa for selecting the perfect table and to Leroy for being an excellent server. His recommendations were perfect. And to the chef! We had a wonderful meal and certainly recommend La Grotta to others.
The ambiance of LaGrotta is lovely-- serene and elegant, without being at all pretentious. All four of us at this lunchtime meeting felt the service was friendly and efficient, and that our meals were generous and well-prepared.
Just phenomenal. As always. Been here many times and it’s a real favorite.
Amazing restaurant! We were seated at LaRoys table. He was such an amazing waiter. He was on point with everything from his suggestions of wine to what to order and he made us feel so welcome. He was friendly and helpful. Great food too!! A definite yes next time we travel to Richmond , Va
I had known about LaGrotta but being a native NYer was skeptical about Richmond Italian restaurants, based upon other experiences. Well I was pleasantly surprised. Although not as spiced as I prefer, the fish combination over pasta in a pink sauce was well balanced and quite enjoyable. The use of garlic and oregano seems to be downplayed in Italian cooking in the area. Although not a dessert person, the tiramisu was worth breaking my diet. A definite do-again.
We celebrated our son's rehearsal dinner at LaGrotta. The food was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. The dessert was incredible ( I never eat dessert but I did!) It was a bit noisy because we were causing the noise. We have also had private dinners here on several occasions. It is just a lovely atmosphere and the hosts and the staff are wonderful. It was so hard to plan an out of town rehearsal dinner but LaGrotta made it a breeze. Every guest had a wonderful time and commented positively about the experience.
Wonderful experience. We loved the staff! The food was delicious :)
Service was prompt and friendly; the atmosphere is spacious and elegant, without being stuffy or pretentious. Most important, both of our meals were delicious and well prepared, and a great value for the price.
Celebrated a family birthday and everything was perfect
Absolutely amazing environment, experience and food! I had a lobster ravioli with red bell pepper cream sauce! Worth every single penny for the food and experience we had.
We ate here the night of a concert at the Richmond Coliseum. Had to wait 10 minutes or so for a table at 6:00 PM despite having a reservation. I guess they overbook a bit the night of events. Waited a long time for a glass of wine. The appetizer came before the wine. Again, the bartender and servers seemed overwhelmed by the crowd. Food, however was excellent!
We enjoyed the spinach ravioli (freshly made pasta!) and the sole. Our starter salads were a little on the large side, but that's not a complaint!
The food and the service was excellent; will definitely be back
Amazing as always, La Grotta never disappoints. The staff is knowledgeable, attentive and had given exceptional service each time we’ve visited (dozens of times over the past several years going back even to the old Shockoe location). The food is fresh, inventive, and lovely with a variety of exciting new specials each day and a menu of classic Italian fine dining. The wine list is also wonderful. This is absolutely one of Richmond’s finest restaurants.
Very classy decor and ambience. Excellent pace for each course. We chose the Wine Dinner Special for both of us; pricey at $55 per, but the amount & quality of food & wine was worth it! Great service & recommendations by our server, who knew the menu well. Very authentic Italian cuisine. Can't come here regularly, but we will definitely be back!
Great food. Lovely ambiance. This is our second time here, first in the newer location, and it does not disappoint. It was the perfect meal after our son's graduation and I'd come back again.
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Good table location, excellent service, excellent food and wine. My dessert had a birthday candle! Our first time since relocation from Shockhoe Slip, special atmosphere came with you! Thanks.
Awful service. Poor management. Kept forgetting to replace utensils.
This was the best meal I have had in Richmond in a while, food was excellent. Will go back and tell folks.
Both the service and dinner were amazing!
Always top-notch food and service here... never fails!
Fabulous start to finish!
Service was great! Food was ok. I got the lobster ravioli with a tomato based shrimp sauce. It was ok, a little oily for my taste. There were 3 in our party. We had 3 entrees (pasta only), 1 side of spinach, 2 desserts, 2 glasses of wine, and a soda and the bill before tip was $131. A little pricy for an average dinner. It was ok but I won't go back.
As usual, the service was professional and the food delicious. It was especially pleasant to dine pre-theater, that is, before the crowd descended,
La Grotta does not disappoint. I had a wonderful lunch and will definitely be going back for the amazing cuisine. The staff are super attentive and lovey. And, the tiramisu is the best I ever had!
The spinach ravioli was amazing! We wanted to lick our plates! The veal was very nice too. Our waiter kept forgetting about us and our orders, so this is the reason for the less than perfect rating.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at this restaurant, The food selections were excellent, as was the service, which was attentive without being overbearing. As an aside, the location is convenient to both Broad Street and the Interstate. Parking was: complimentary, valet attended and in the same building.
Love this place.
The food was delicious and the server was wonderful.
An excellent first class presentation of their restaurant-week benefit menu.
We came there after seeing a play at Altria and it was also my birthday as well. I had eaten many times at La Grotta when it was still on Shockoe Slip but not since they moved. You had a great deal because of Restaurant Week (it was the last day), it was something like $29.18 per person. I did purchase a $27 bottle of when, so without the alcohol it was $94 for two, not the most I paid for two people but it's up there. I really like the Buffalo Rib-eye which I will get next time but I may skip the alcohol to keep the price in a respectable range. Everything about the ambiance and the waiter were perfect! The food was absolutely excellent as well! Will look to come during another special occasion in the future and I will be getting the Buffalo Rib-eye!
This restaurant is without a doubt the best Italian this side of Italy ....well, maybe including Italy! The chef is superb, able to accommodate allergies and preferences and the wait staff is professional and welcoming......a gem in Richmond!
Two of my three courses were excellent but my fish entree was not fresh and therefore had a bit of an off taste as did my friend’s. Our husbands enjoyed their meat entrees and our salads and desserts were excellent.
