La Grotta - Richmond Ratings and Reviews
Restaurant was very nice about accommodating our party when we were 30 minutes late..did call first. Service was spotty on checking back for drinks, food, as always, was better than average and the chef made a special dish for one guest. Not the best LaGrotta experience, but a good solid meal for a fair price.
My wife and I were in town for my business visit. We had a chance to have dinner just the two of us, and decided to try La Grotta. Beautiful place with an award winning wine list. What could go wrong? Answer was the food - we tried the wine dinner menu - and wine pairings. The appetizers were OK but not memorable. We each ordered for our main course the veal offering with a cream sauce. Big mistake. Neither of us could finish half of it. Cloying, luke warm sauce that completely hid whatever might have been the quality of the veal under it. Then there were the wine pairings. The wines with the appetizers were excellent whites. Mine was a pinot grigio. The wine with the main course was a barolo. Just not from a good bottle. The deserts were fine. Service was competent and friendly. The main course and its wine pairing ruined it. Very disappointed. Won't go back.
My husband and I were traveling north from Florida to NJ, and found ourselves in Richmond on New Year's Eve. A little research led us to La Grotta as our best local option. The menu looked tantalizing, and it was very close to our downtown hotel.
We were disappointed. The decor and ambience were enticing on a cold evening, but the food simply did not justify the steep prices. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't very good. We hoped to be transported, but found our meal consistently mediocre. My carpaccio was over-dressed, with the vinaigrette overwhelming the beef's flavor. My quail was pretty good, but the sauce was overly salty, and the accompanying greens were rather tough. My husband's veal scallopini was standard, steamer-tray fare, in his estimation. He ordered frog's legs as an appetizer, hoping for a delicacy. They were adequate, but uninspiring.
My dessert (a chocolate bowl filled with berries, zabaglione, and vanilla cream) was fine; my husband's profiteroles were hard as rocks (over-frozen).
We do not drink, and so we can't really comment on the wine list.
We do not have a sense of Richmond's food scene, and whether La Grotta is, in fact, as good as it gets there. It is a restaurant with admirable ambition, but it needs to bring its standards up to the level of its pretensions.
The service was excellent.
LaGrotta was wonderful from beginning to end. We went for New Year’s Eve and even though the restaurant was busy our table was ready when we arrived. Our sever was terrific and the food was delicious. The ambiance was lovely. Can’t wait to take my Mom there for her 91st birthday!
I must say I was disappointed to have selected this restaurant for our New Years dinner. I gave it three stars because it was OK. I love the setting. I think the "wine by glass" is very short - and weak. I'm not a fan of food covered in heavy sauces and such so I'd have enjoyed a pasta dish much more than a fish. The server was very nice but I think many restaurants rush the meal on big occasions.
We had an incredible time on Christmas Eve. The service was beyond excellent and the best food imaginably fantastic. It just can't get any better. Tony and Andrea have done an amazing job on their new location and they should be very, very proud. I know everyone was going to miss their old location because it was so romantic, but after you have been in the new restaurant only a few moments you forget all about the old one.
This was our first time to La Grotta in the new location. This was Christmas eve and often there are not many dining options in Richmond on that night
We were pleasantly surprised and pleased by the nice ambience and good Italian food .
My husband really enjoyed the wine and three course meal that included calamari appetizer large enough to share, veal entree and dessert Tartuffe that he liked so much he never got around to sharing.
Our server Marco did a good job with the wine pairing recommendations. My salmon and asparagus were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The others in our party were equally pleased with their selections.
One suggestion is to validate parking for patrons to remove the obstacle people have to dining in the city now that there are so great dining options in the area.
Hope this restaurant does well in this new location. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Our waiter was very slow. We had a noon reservation for lunch because we had a 2:00 show across the street —hardly made it in time after repeated requests to leave for show. Other tables coming in after us were served—it was a waiter issue not a kitchen issue
Food was over seasoned and drowning in sauce ( Veal scalopini, lobster raviloli, antipasti tower) Coconut Cake dessert was very good. Service was average. Server was pleasant, but our veal came to the table and we had no knife. Slow to refill water glasses. Bar service was extremeley slow for our pre dinner drinks. We ordered a bottle of white wine with dinner and it was served at our table without a bottle chiller. We had a table by the front window and the draft was so strong I needed to put my coat on and no one noticed. The server and owner both had no idea how to ring up a gift card and was frustrated with us over their lack of knowledge. And she asked us to move from our table while they tried to figure it out beacuase they obviuuosly didnt mange reservations correctly. After all of the above, we never would go back again, but I may have given the place a 3 star if the owner hadnt raised ger voice to my husband, called him rude and said " I dont want to deal with you anymore"
Our service was wonderful, but our food was not. One of our guests ordered a caprese salad. (It was not on the dinner menu, but the kitchen kindly offered to make one.) The tomatoes and cheese were flavorless and the seasoning was almost non-existent. The chef made a second one. It was better, but still not good.
All guests ordered the seafood special with fettuccine, lobster, shrimp and scallops. The pasta was well done. The sauce was ok, but could have used more seasoning. The lobster and shrimp were overcooked and tough. The scallops were discolored. (One guest ate them and didn't say anything. The others declined. )
While the location, ambience and service were excellent, the food was barely passable. We travel to Richmond a lot on business and were happy to have found a new place to eat. Sadly, I can't imagine returning.
We met our son and his girlfriend at La Grotta to celebrate our son's birthday. Our waitress, Olga, was very attentive. The food, including dessert, was delicious. After dinner it was a short walk over the Carpenter Center for our program. Great location - great food!
