Whenever we dine at La Grotta we are reminded why we return. Fantastic sauces. Great service. Guests are treated as family. As as example, the calamari salad my wife loves was not on the menu. She lamented to Marco, our waiter, who went back to the kitchen. When he returned, he told her that the chef would gladly prepare the salad just for her. We shared our pasta course: ravioli stuffed with duck in a sauce that cannot be described. We asked for spoons. Our meal was perfect in every respect.
La Grotta has an extensive wine list with an emphasis on Italian wines.
I recommend you try this trattoria disguised as a restaurant before it’s discovered.
Quiet night in the restaurant, and we had a first class meal with first class service for our anniversary. Will definitely return!
Food and service was great!!
The service and owner are spectacular. Highly recommended for all.
Had wonderful dinner. I recommend the course wine dinner. The menu selections and wine pairings were great! Our server Courtney was great. Would highly recommend La Grotta!!
The food was excellent. The service not so much at all. Actually it was probably the worst table service I can remember. I would go back for the very good food but I would tell them to be leery of the service.
Great food except filet was a little over cooked. Poor timing by server as we ordered a second drink before ordering food and the food arrived first. Still would recommend highly. Over all a nice dining experience.
Our waiter was great, but there was a lot lacking from the people that brought the food to our table. They didn’t bring a spoon for the soup. They brought salad and soup at the same time. They didn’t clear empty dishes before bringing entrees.
Incredible meal... homemade pastas... romantic atmosphere... Head Chef (owner) comes out to visit with guests and to recommend a bottle of wine upon request... one of the top 5 restaurants in Richmond IMHO.
Chef Tony is absolutely amazing
in my opinion the only real Italian restaurant in Richmond
These 2 couples rarely eat out together so this was a particularly special evening!!
The restaurant was not crowded yet we 4 were seated for 8 PM reservation exactly behind a very loud group of young people waiting for appetizers. In a long narrow room with 2 glass walls, nothing sound absorbent in the room!
The main dinning room was almost empty! We finally asked to move to the main dinning room for dessert and coffee! This was done successfully? Then the large table walked out saying prolonged fair wells by our new table!!!
Also sadly LaGrotta has no four sided 4 “tops” with a seat on each side. This configuration makes conversation much easier.
Fabulous food and outstanding service in a beautiful location. We will be back!
Excellent meal with excellent server! Great restaurant for special occasion.
Fate and business brought me to Richmond. I fondly remembered when this restaurant was in the basement. It has been decades since I was last here. The only thing I can say was everything was even better than I remembered. We had all of the appetizers even the specials. All were outstanding. The pastas and beef dishes were all solid and well seasoned and cooked.
If could have eaten more I am sure we would have.
This is by far one of the easiest places to recommend ever.
We got to La Grotta early so we would be rushed for a theater opening. Service was slow and we just barely made the theater. Disappointing service.
Everything was delicious. Service was amazing! Great way to spend our 5 year anniversary.
Very good, one if the best meals I have had in awhile
2nd dinner in 2 weeks. Everything has been wonderful. Food is fabulous - quail, pasta dishes, appetizers, baked oysters, wine, desserts . Can't wait to return.
Food was superb with seasonal offerings. Absolutely delicious for all four members of our party.
I would definitely recommend to a friend and I would tell them to ask for Shy. He was the perfect waiter.
We chose La Grotta because of its fine reputation for excellent food, food presentation, and fine dining (white glove) service for our sixth wedding anniversary, for the second year in the row. The experience was as expected, wonderful. However, this time there were hiccups. The first, the salads were served before the shared appetizer. We didn’t complain, but when we asked, our server offered a lame excuse of new kitchen staff. We made it work but we had To hold back because the salads were huge! I chose one of the specials for my main course, a whole branzino, which was overcooked, very dry and almost tasteless compared with the accompanying medley of summer vegetables and mashed potatoes. Truly a disappointment, despite its expert presentation. Otherwise, a nearly perfect celebratory dinner.
The food was outstanding. I had the special- the branzino - and it was prepared perfectly.
Best Italian fine cuisine in town. It does not matter what day of the week, lunch or dinner, everything is delicious there. Highly recommended.
Food was delicious and service was attentive. Definitely recommend!
First time at the new location and while it doesn't have the same charm as the old location in the bottom, the food hasn't changed a bit and our meals were fantastic! Highly recommended.
The service was not great and the food was average at best. A disappointing experience.
Wonderful restaurant with attentive staff. We were celebrating my son's new job in Richmond and they made our night very special.
Weeknight dinner and not very busy.
Like the new location — just across the street from Downtown Marriott.
Servings are huge. Food is excellent with attentive service.
We will not be dining there again any time soon
Fantastic restaurant. Can't rave enough about the food, service and ambiance. We will return again and again, it's that good. Easily matches or exceeds any fine Italian restaurant we've ever dined at anywhere. Wow, just wow!
We have eaten here many times and it just seems to keep getting better and better. From the food to the wait staff the only word is excellence. They should be very proud of what they offer. A little pricey, but I quickly add that we keep returning.
The eggplant parmesan is a must try. It’s not on the menu but, they will make it for you. And it is an epicurean delight.
Went for my birthday and had the best time and the best food. Wouldn’t change anything but the location (it was a little cramp, but not enough to ever complain or not return again and again)!
We made our reservation a month in advance for our anniversary. When we arrived there was no seat in the window area as we had requested. After a conference with the Manager, Lisa, she guided us to the bar where we had complimentary Prosecco. In a few minutes she had rearranged the window seating area that was set up for two large parties and set up a table for two. That was good customer service, which is why we return there often on special occasions or just to have a fine dining experience. The other large parties next to us called in late for their seating so my wife and I had the entire window are to ourselves for the duration. Thanks again to Lisa!
Anthony took excellent care of our large crowd - kept us in drinks and appetizers (calamari and antipasto) and maintained a watchful eye over the table. Everyone cleaned their plates. My food was good not great, but La Grotta has great food, which I will get on my next visit.
I was visiting from Florida, there to celebrate my graduation from college and my first mother’s day without my mom who passed away a few months ago. Our reservation was for 8pm. We were traveling from Lynchburg and hit some traffic and arrived at 8:06 - the doors were locked. But there were people inside. Open Table said we had a 20-minutes grace period so we thought maybe we needed to go into a different door. We tried several doors back and forth, walking around the building and finally called at 8:15. I was greeted by Andrea (the owner’s wife) who stated they took the last table at 8pm and locked the doors. When I explained we had a reservation and ran late due to traffic but didn’t call because Open Table said we had a 20 minute grace period, she just kept reiterating that the current time was 8:15 and they took their last table at 8pm.
She finally let us in, reiterating all the way that it was after 8pm. I should’ve walked out then but remained hopeful the experience would turn around. Long story short: the food was awful, overpriced, and our waiter quite stoic and not warm, never checking on us once someone else delivered the food. I cried at the table because it was already an emotional weekend missing my mom, and it seemed my graduation/Mother’s Day dinner was a bust. With a $153 bill, we still tipped him 20%.... but I would NEVER recommend this place. Their attitude alone would prevent me from ever considering this restaurant again, aside from the overpriced, bad food.
I travel frequently for business (Italy often) and am not a stranger to different foods ...this was the worst Italian food I have ever eaten. The restaurant is typically not open Sunday and were opened specifically for Mother’s Day. Perhaps they had many things pre-made that were old and tasteless by the time we got there? I don’t know. But between the owner‘a wife’s attitude, our waiter and the food ..I paid $200 for nothing.
A wonderful dining experience with exceptional service and a friendly atmosphere. I would definitely recommend for any special occasion!! Great food presentation while very delicious.
It's a shame that the service at this restaurant is so bad because the food is excellent.
First time in this location. We have eaten in the old location many times over the years. Same quality of service, food and ambiance. Nice evening.
