Excellent buffet, especially salads with shrimp, salmon, steak or all of these. Tasty soups. Superb service. Fabulous views of San Diego.
As usual the dining room setting is perfect with a lovely view. The menu options were excellent and the food delicious. The service was responsive and attentive.
The location is great, the food was good, however I had to give a low star rating due to the slowness of service. The place did not look overcrowded and ironically we only ordered 2 salads. It took an excessively long time to get them. When we inquired we were given what sounded like excuses. This was a business meeting, I could tell my guest was not impressed.
Great service! We were nearly the only guests for early dinner! (Early seating). Great sunset view!
Back to the scene of my fabulous 70th and 74th birthday parties. Just awesome as always.
Great hidden gem on USD campus. Beautiful views, very nice presentations of table, meals and restaurant overall. Dessert was delicious! We went for Valentine's Day, they had a great menu selected for this special date night. They had a lovely pianist playing in the background as well! The only thing that might have made it even more perfect would have been dimming the lights a bit and maybe put some candles on the table to make it a wee bit more romantic for Valentine's Day anyway...
I love everything about La Gran Terraza except their new menu. The setting and service is great, but I feel they are trying to be too experimental with their menu. Our dining experience was wonderful except we were totally underwhelmed with the food.
This is my second visit to La Gran Terrazza, and I was not disappointed. Very good service, excellent food and great ambience.
We ate here during restaurant week. Three course fixed price dinner. Four pf us hafd different entres and each was terrific. Bread pudfing and three desert sampler were terrific. Service was wonderful!
Food was marginal. No ambiance. Disappointed. 😕 my birthday no acknowledgement.
Excellent meal overlooking Mission Bay.
The meal was disappointing. The marinara sauce in the Arnachini Margherita was so salty that it was barely edible. This was to compensate for the fact the risotto balls were bland.
Chicken tangine was very disappointing--the chicken was dry; the coulis was lumpy and very dry.
The best part of the meal was dessert.
We have had their prime rib meal, and that, too, has become rather disappointing.
First time dining here. Experience was very good, but the signage to locate the restaurant was just fair. It is in the same building as the college store and other rooms and offices. Had to ask directions twice to find it. The venue itself is impressive, with floor to ceiling palladium windows, overlooking Mission Valley and the view extends all the way to Coronado Island. We were there for lunch, but think the view of the city at night must be awesome. We both had a salad option, one with grilled chicken and bleu cheese and one "trio" with beets , sweet peppers and zucchini. Both were nicely seasoned, not filled with lots of lettuce and beautifully presented. We shared the dessert, a chocolate "ice cream sandwich ", a giant confection with two huge, thick chocolate cookies, surrounding about three inches of chocolate ice cream and liberally dusted with chocolate shavings. Definitely a dessert to share. Service was attentive, and we did not feel rushed at all. Valet parking was available at no charge, although we did leave a tip. The. University campus itself is beautiful. We will return again for dinner. A great find is an unusual place !
Had family in town for the holidays and they loved the view, the campus and the food was terrific, even though it was the last lunch before they closed for the Christmas holiday. The prime rib was very tender and seasoned nicely and the selection of salads was wonderful!
Took mom for her 95th birthday and was disappointed with the cold buffet. I was hoping for some warm food. Buffet has always offered warm food in the past; I’ll be sure to ask what is being offered next time I make a reservation.
$35 for a cold lunch, plus two $5 tips (service and valet).
Always have eaten from. your delicious buffet.
Understand you are eliminating the punch card...sad but I do understand.
Staff overworked and noone specifically assigned to your table....this never happened before....we will try again, but this past week's lunch I even had to take my credit card out to the hostess...noone was picking it up and took over 30 min. for lunch to arrive. Had to ask for it.
This was the Festival Tea. It was lovely. I recommend that you go next year
Wonderful dinner for my birthday. Carolers made it more special. Food buffet wonderful. Staff Betty did a great job taking care of us. We will definitely come back. Would love to take guests.
Everything took too long. Getting server attention, getting food, bill plus one meal never came. Manager came over to table to apologize and offered JUST the person who's dinner was missing a cup of coffee. And then charged us for it. Needed to complain to get it removed. Very sloppy.
Great place! Excellent food and service, a beautiful restaurant!
Great venue. My only challenge this time was that the valet was full. I would have preferred to do that instead of park and pay for parking. Also, after i checked in to the restaurant they let me know there is a code for 1.5 hours of free parking. That would have been useful before I parked and paid!
The Thanksgiving Menu was good. The food was tasty.
First time attending the pre thanksgiving lunch buffet. Everything was excellent and we had an efficient and personable waitress. The dessert table needed clean up, attention, and replenishment and it was only 1pm with another hour left for guests to enjoy it.
The turkey was the BEST turkey I ever have eaten out! Moist and flavorful. Salmon great! Pork loin a little on the dry side. Veggies, sweet amazing cranberry, potato mash and dessert awesome. Had some good options for gluten free, so didn't try gravy, stuffing and pie and cookies. Hot wild blueberries and raspberries yummy.
This place is on the USD Campus and it truly is a gem of a restaurant. I really didn't want to leave a review since it's never packed but they deserve my review. Go on Wednesdays for their prime rib buffet, it as good as Donovans.
One of the best kept secrets in San Diego. Don't be intimidated by the fact that the restaurant is on campus. Valet parking solves the parking problem.
My guest was a dear friend of 20 years; we celebrated his 74th birthday. La Gran Terraza's cuisine and service did not disappoint. And there was even a little slice of cake for him, with a birthday candle and song!
La Gran Terraza's roast beef buffet offered an outstanding selection of fresh salads, fruits, and veggies to accompany the main course. Everything was displayed invitingly. There was also a delicious selection of desserts. Our waitress was exceptionally attentive.
Had lunch with my son who goes to USD. Looking forward to going here again.
Unfortunately, due to the parking issues, I will probably not return nor recommend for business meetings. I've used the valet, however if there is a lot of activity on the campus, the valet gets full, and there is NO WHERE to park, even if you plan on arriving early. Something needs to be done about the parking for the restaurant!
seated us on patio, alone. No waitress came. Had to get up and go find one. Brought wrong food after a very long wait for lunch. Eventually waitress tried her best to make things better. Valet parking said we had to be back by 1:30 period. Had to get up front lunch and get keys. Took 15 min to find the car later. Not our best day.
La Gran Terraza is a real find. We went for restaurant week and had a wonderful meal for $30 per person. I've eaten there often and also love their buffet. Great selection of food.
The dinning room is casually elegant in a beautiful Spanish-style building on the impressive University of San Diego campus.
Parking in their structure or on the campus requires use of their parking meters, which I find problematic. You can park in the structure free after 7:00 pm.
Everyone was very friendly and in conjunction of how good the food was and the gorgeous view, this is now my favorite spot to eat .
We had the MOST delightful evening! Each month the 6 of us get together for dinner, we've been doing this for decades. It was the first time any of us had been to La Gran Terraza. The food was excellent, the view was fabulous and the setting was remarkable. Betty was our server. She was wonderful! Personable, efficient, competent, unobtrusive and very pleasant. She was knowledgeable regarding not only the menu but also the wine list. We’ll add this location to future dining out adventures!
Excellent food, beautiful view and excellent service too!
We found that there were issues with the pork loin (as in the past) as well as the chicken: (1)you needed a steak knife to cut through the meat slices...it looked good, but it was tough & tasteless...the gravy with mushrooms was very tasteful...(2) both my wife & I choose chicken pieces which had a rib cage attached...here again, the white meat had a stringy texture which made it difficult to cut...we had to to pick it up & eat it with our hands.
The soup, dessert & salads were very good.
Service, compared to the many prior lunches, was lacking.
Eliminating the card punching for attendance incentive was very disappointing too.
If I had payed twice the the price for the buffet, I would have demanded a refund!!!
Good value buffet but go early before it's picked over
Unfortunately this time I cannot write a good review. Five of us were celebrating our four years of friendship and since we enjoyed the food, ambiance, and service at this restaurant last time, we came again, this time to celebrate. They ran out of everything in the middle of our lunch. Some in my group never tried the b.b.q. beef. We did not enjoy the chicken that much. There came a big group while we were eating, they were very energetic and noisy! We saw them with empty plates in their hands around the food table, hoping to find some main dish to eat but chicken, beef, and pork were out! We have never experienced a buffet lunch that had not enough food. Where was the manager and why would they let more people come in the restaurant if they were out of food????? This left a bitter memory for all of us and our money was wasted.
The biggest disappointment was the food. Especially the prime rib, which was what most of us were looking forward to. It was overdone (prime rib should be pink, not brown in the middle) and it was tough (you should be able to cut prime rib with a butter knife). I had to saw through the prime rib with my butter knife and thought about asking for a steak knife at one point. Also some of the thicker pieces of salmon were undercooked.
Frankly, I brought some guests to the restaurant and was a bit embarrassed when we left, when everyone revealed that they didn't really enjoy the food.
