La Gran Terraza is one of San Diego's best kept secrets. I suspect that is because it is on a university campus. There is valet parking, however, and the valet parking stand is very close to the top-of-the-hill entrance to the kiosk. The ambiance, food quality, and pleasant service are worth going to the effort to find the place.
Buffet is always delicious. The desserts are so creative. Service is very polite.
I love la gran Terraza most of the time we get great food and service.
Not this time, took friends for the Fat Tuesday event and the food was very disappointing... unlike last years one, the crawfish was terrible, texture, flavor etc... and there were too many rice dishes...carbo food including the cream of potato soup. Too rich, almost no protein and no real fresh vegetables.
Sorry I felt compelled to write this! Ls year the crawfish platter was amazing and delicious!!!
Excellent fat tuesday luncheon menu. Very festive and enjoyable
We took a candidate for lunch and it was perfect to show the beautiful USD community.
Great view. Service is always slow and meals are on the pricey side. Buffet is always better than ordering ala carte.
What a fantastic lunch and memorable experience bringing my parents to USD campus to enjoy the food and ambiance at La Gran Terraza!
We thoroughly enjoyed our luncheon. The price is very reasonable considering it is a white tablecloth restaurant and the lunch offerings are very good. Several of us had the scallops and shrimp dish and we loved it. They could work on their desserts a little bit more, but all in all we would definitely go back. Gorgeous view too ...
Had a great dinner here with friends, good service, great food, portion sizes were sensible but not stingy, and overall value very good. Only thing I'd ding it for is that even though it was not crowded, noise from two other larger parties did carry quite a bit in the room. Not sure what one would do about that other than maybe some decorative room divider panels of some kind to cut down on noise...?
Everything was great from the time our party walked in, to when we left. The staff was pleasant, professional and on top of their jobs. The food was great, a tad salty, but would highly recommend.
Great place for dinner . During the summer the views are outstanding.
What a beautiful Valentine dinner!
My wife and I enjoyed the food, chamber music, sunset, and wonderful, wonderful service. We will go back again soon.
The price hike for the Buffet should be justified with excellent dining options (just went up from $15.95 to $18.95). This is a lot for a lunch buffet.
The fare was disappointing. In particular, the sauteed vegetables were swimming in pesto and the salad dressings were not labeled. There are not enough choices for vegetarians.
One of the best kept secrets for fine dining in San Diego. Excellent food, service and ambiance!
Great food A well rounded menu. Great value for the for the quality of the food and a good selection of wines in a moderate price range. Good date night over all. Probably not as busy after hours.
Lunch service. Valet (complementary) parking since parking is terrible at USD.
All very good.
The food was excellent! It would be helpful to tell first timers where to park in the school for dinner.
The food is always great here. I love the buffet - great options for everyone. It's also good when you are short on time and want a nice lunch. Servers are very friendly.
We pulled up to the curb expecting the valet person to be on duty, no one there , so we drove around the back of the building and parked in a assigned spot, we went into the building and explain to the parking office, they suggest we move the car, we went up the evaluator towards the restaurant, I looked out the window and saw the valet person setting up his stand I went and explained where I parked he was very kind and told me he'd move my car to the proper area, went in and sat down for a very nice lunch, I had written on my reservation request we were celebrating a birthday, it was not mentioned.
Great time, as always. Love the place.
We had a great dinner here with our family. Thanks.
It was a fantastic evening!!! The Carolers were in full form with old world attire and great song and cheer.
The desserts were a bit blah and staff didn’t seem to keep up. Service was ok, always had to flag down, there was no follow up. The pot roast was delicious!!
It’s a beautiful setting but it’s cold and without character. the food is just ok. The Xmas decorations were very nice. But the buffet was not particularly good. The food was just warm not hot enough. The dessert table was great. Service is friendly and professional . Overall, overpriced
Event was good except for the evaluation in the middle of our meal due to the fire alarms going off... was interesting for sure!
Great to see Santa for the kids and without stressing with so many people.
Food was good full display of brunch classics.
It was good overall, but my dish wasn't that enjoyable.
Great place for a holiday celebration with our office crew!
We had a great time at the Christmas Carolers lunch! Great job to the entire staff. Thank you.
The lovely room, the views, and the gracious service are excellent. We were welcomed and cared for. The food was nothing special.
I went to the buffet here for two times, and I was very disappointed both times. There were not many choices, the food was not that tasty and it was super expensive. Don’t recommend the buffet at all.
Carolers a little close to table for conversation both times. Didn't know Caroler luncheon was $26.50 until we got there. Thought they had menu option and buffet option. Otherwise, lovely!
Great food, the service was superb and the violin music was beautiful.
So enjoyable, no rush. Relaxing to catch up with an old friend...the buffet is a real treat.
The food and service at La Gran Terraza were, as usual, wonderful. It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to dine. The food is always fresh and delicious and the wait staff are very helpful.
A very comfortable environment for dining. A nice wine list that won’t break the bank. I wish they were open on weekends.
Beautiful views. Food was delicious. However, it was a bit slow coming out for those ordering off menu instead of buffet. Waitress a little snippity when asked why taking so long 😬.
La Gran Terraza has been a favorite of my husband and me for many years. We individually and together have brought friends and family members there to enjoy its understated elegance, its picturesque setting observable through the magnificent window settings, and the always reliable good fare.
In addition to the benefits of the restaurant itself, it is an immediate assistant in enjoying leisurely time to extend a campus visit to enjoy attractions such as the current Gallery shows and events at the Institute of Peace and Justice.
USD offers much to locals and visitors alike, and La Gran Terraza is a jewel in its crown.
Great service as always; amazing dessert tonight—apple soufflé with salted caramel sauce.
I do not recommend ordering off of the buffet after 1 p.m. without looking to see what's actually still left. The kitchen closes at 1:30 p.m., so they weren't really replenishing the buffet table by the time I got my food. The one time I didn't actually see what was there before deciding on the buffet...
Excellent service and food. One of SD’s hidden gems
