I had high hopes for this restaurant...it seemed to have good reviews and it was next to the New Museum of Contemporary Art. The glass of French chardonnay tasted like the bottle had been open for a week and had been sitting under the sink ready to be used for cooking wine. The waitress graciously brought me a glass of another type of white wine, which was at least fresh, and adequate. The menu was too large for an un-busy restaurant and my heart sank a little. But I ordered the branzino, which I thought was a fresh and safe bet. Unfortunately the fish was high...really old and off and sickening. Made worse by being presented well on a lovely plate with roasted tomatoes and potatoes. I would never go back. However the waitress was again gracious and did all she could to salvage the situation.

The hostess seemed distracted, unable to seat us quickly, despite restaurant's being empty. Servers compensated for her attitude. They were charming. But some desserts came immediately; others came 15 minutes later. After the dining room was half full, the noise became deafening.

Food was good. The waiters are welcoming. It was my friend's birthday yesterday and I request a candle on dessert. But they seemed totally forgot that, which disappointed me a lot.

French Restaurant Week menu is a great value with classic bistro items. A traditional French bistro with well prepared food; Roquefort salad, Onion Soup gratineed, Steak frites, Duck confit, Creme brulee & Chocolate mousse were all delicious bringing back nostalgic memories of France. No bells & whistles-just straightforward good cooking.

Great food, large portions, we had a table of 6 with a mandatory 20 % tip, absolutely zero service . 3 hour dinner, things forgotten. This would be 5 star if the service was decent, it wasn't , not sure if I would go back

My experience at La Gamelle started out terribly, and this would likely have been a 0-star rather than a 5-star review. But this is a story about staff recognizing that they made a mistake, and treating customers like real people. Bottom line: it was great and I plan to go back. The bad: We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation, but we were then passed over 3 or 4 times by other groups getting seated. Each time the staff assured us that our table was nearly ready, and each time we continued to wait. We were finally seated about an hour and a half after our reservation. The good: The staff members recognized their error, apologized profusely, and initially comped us a round of drinks at the bar while we waited. When we were passed over again, the hostess came over to us, again apologized, and told us in no uncertain terms that she would make sure we were taken care of. From there, everything was great. The staff was very attentive, and the manager and hostess checked on us repeatedly. They ultimately comped the entire meal, including wine. In my view, this is the sort of thing that happens from time to time at a busy New York restaurant. The question is always how does the staff respond. Aida and the other staff members handled the issue very professionally, and we'll definitely be back. We split the short rib pappardelle and a ribeye, and also got escargot and a couple other sides. The food was good -- especially the pasta. And the table bread was great too -- which is always nice.

We were seated near the bar, which the hostess kindly offered so as to be more comfortable. Unfortunately half an hour later the bar was packed and people were bumping into us left and right. The waitstaff didn't bother to ask people to respect the tables, or bother to go through the crowd to provide service. We sat with uncleared appetizers and my drink never came. The waiter was unapologetic and said something to the effect of liking it this way. To be fair, I didn't not complain, perhaps because the waiter didn't seem to hear most of what I said.

Some family and friends from NYC, NJ, and Massachusetts wanted to get together before a memorial service in the Bowery. We found La Gamelle on OpenTable and it was fantastic. A real find. My brother who enjoys french cuisine and is difficult to please said several times that I had made good choice. I had the steak tartare which was perfect. The service was excellent and they very generously gave our table some quite delicious pastries on the house. La Gamelle is now on several of our lists of restaurants to return to.

We went on Tuesday and they had a special menu for Mardi Gras and the food was excellent. We had Shimper's row gumbo to start, it was my first time trying it and it was rich in flavor. My wife had the filet mignon steak dianne it had a mushroom sauce that was exquisite. I had the Loup de mer mirabeau for my main course. The seabass had a lemon sauce and the dish was filled with vegetables. The sea bass was excellent. La Gamelle never disappoints.

We love this place for dinner, this was our first time for brunch. The drinks were good-bloody mary was spicy. Food was great, as usual. Excellent steak tartare and a lovely croque madame. An omelet was apparently very nice and the eggs benedict was delicious. We love the atmosphere, really feels like you're back in Paris, and the wait staff is mostly French. Service was friendly and prompt. We will be back. Again.

I have eaten at La Gamelle before and enjoyed it tremendously. Unfortunately this time the restaurant was so crowded and SO understaffed (two waiters for 30 tables and a painfully slow kitchen) that we left after 15 minutes of watching nothing happen in terms of ordering or delivery of food. I truly hope they get their act together on the service front...because it's a lovely space with great food!

Too full for dessert but both entree and appetizers were excellent. Very fairly priced for the level of service and quality of food.

This is a great spot to go for weekend brunch If you are headed to the New Museum or one of the other attractions in the area. Service is very French (not very warm and a bit indifferent), food is good, DJ'd music is stupid loud -- and we weren't the only table unhappy about that. But the weekend pastries are quite good and prices aren't bad. As long as you aren't dying to have a long, intimate conversation, one of the better brunch bets in the immediate area.

You'll have a more enjoyable dinner than we did, because there was a large, loud company holiday party going on when we were there, and we enjoyed it anyway aside from the noise. This is a very classic, authentic French bistro very much like those you'll find all over France. Dishes were tasty and well-prepared, though (intentionally) not wildly creative. Prices are entirely reasonable for this part of town - you could easily spend $10 more elsewhere per main course for no better food. There are probably better deals and/or better food, but La Gamelle was entirely satisfactory.

My wife has a tell all rating for places like this: "we don't have to come here again". For those interested in details, read on: The decor of LA Gamelle is very reminiscent of a Parisian bistro. So very pleasant! Unfortunately it all goes down hill after the initial visual impression. Music is an important component of ambiance. And the type of music one would expect in a Parisian bistro is not 70 disco! This was a red flag signalling things to come. Jazz or almost anything supportive of a relaxed ambiance would have been Ok. Food - the fois gras rabbit confit appetizer was a disaster. Served over-chilled, the texture was like eating day old refrigerated meat drippings. There's a problem when the main flavor is from some glazed cranberries on the plate! At $29 per slice this a major disappointment. The steaks were passable and the fries were good. They had a filet mignon special that was a large cut. The NY strip was tiny for $24. Service - unprofessional. Our waiter was friendly but could not handle the basics. We had to remind him three times for a diet coke. And the waiter completely botched description of the appetizer! We expected something warm and savory. The cacophony of sounds, comical service and mediocre kitchen make this a definite "one timer".
