I was surprised that this restaurant received a four star rating. To me, it was overrated. We started with a calamari appetizer, but it was hard and over fried. At $12, we thought it should be better. When we noted the poor preparation to the waiter, instead of offering an apology or remedy, he said "Really? Everybody usually likes it." To be fair, the entrées were good, but not worth the price (lunch for 2, no drinks, 1 appetizer, $75 with tip). Later, a friend told me this isn't really an Italian- or French-run restaurant, but one run by Turkish people. I have no problem with any nationality, but I prefer to support more "authentic" restaurants. I'm sticking with Aldo's in Los Altos for Italian and Left Bank in Menlo Park for French.

The service and ambiance was very nice. There was low key live music too. However, the food itself was overpriced. The meat was cooked correctly but the sauces were very disappointing. So too was the wine recommended and the bread/dip.

Valentines special menu was very nice and the free gift a nice touch. Food was good although steak was warm not hot. Felt a bit rushed but understand why. Have been here on other occasions and it’s consistently good.

We celebrated Valentine's Day at La Fontaine. The special menu for the day had many excellent choices. The service was attentive and included a gift of a small wooden box of chocolate kisses. We greatly enjoyed our meal.

I chose this restaurant to host my first planned business lunch meeting and it was perfect! Everyone enjoyed the food and delicious wine! The ambiance was perfect for a business lunch and it was quiet enough for us all to discuss topics with each other. Staff was amazing and accommodating. I would definitely recommend to all!

Food was pretty tasty but took exceedingly long to come out of the kitchen (even the wait staff acknowledged that and apologized). Both of us got a pasta dish and they were decent but not spectacular. Overall, a little bit pricey for what we got and how long it took us to get it.

Came here to celebrate a special occasion with my wife. Waiter put in the wrong order for duck breast so I got my dish while my wife waited an extra 20 minutes for hers. I felt really bad eating without her but she didn't want my pasta to get cold. In essence we each ate alone while watching the other eat. Decent food but terrible experience. I really wanted to like this restaurant on Castro.

All our selections were very well prepared and delicious. The spinach, strawberry & mango salad was fresh and tasty. Fruit was perfect degree of ripeness. Vinaigrette carefully balanced. The Fried Calamari Starter was lightly but fully dipped in a tasty batter and fried to where they weren't greasy and they stayed hot a good length of time. It is served with both tartar sauce and a spicy chili type sauce. Next time we'll remember to ask for two sides of tartar and skip the heat. Our entrees were both very pleasing: Linguini with prawns: 4 or 5 hearty sized prawns very well prepared, which means they managed to keep the prawns very lightly cooked so they remained succulent.; Breast of duck: a generous serving with a very tasty cranberry+ other fruit sauce, not too fruity nor too saucy. The duck itself extremely tender and tasty, cooked on the rare side but definitely safely cooked. Five plump little medallions of the duck, served over wild rice. We will definitely return to this active restaurant, but first we'll find out the better times to come to hopefully avoid tables of 6 and 10 business women and men, which kept the noise level more "energetic" than we care for. Prefer not to have to shout across a small table in order to talk to our dinner partner! Service prompt, alert but non-intrusive.

Four of us had tickets to Theatre Works and had a difficult time deciding among the many different entrees. Wine choices were great. We certainly will be back to try something new.

We’ve only visited a few times but each time the food, drinks and service were great. The staff are considerate and attentive but also genuine. Quaint and comfortable atmosphere, we’ll be going back soon.

Good food. I had the pistachio coated halibut which was quite good. My wife has a pasta but was disappointed in that she thought it had way too much sauce. Service and ambience were fine.

The food was a bit pricey given it's quality. Small restaurant with a bar. A bit noisy. My friends and I had to lean in to be heard in our own discussion.

Had a good meal for our Anniversary. Staff seemed shorthanded on a Monday as there was a big party. got a little loud but not too bad. Food was excellent and service attentive despite the bigger party.The beef ribs were particularly good as was the puff pastry covered in chocolate for dessert.

We've been to La Fontaine many times, and were very happy to be recognized by staff, especially since we haven't been there in some months. We were less happy with the quality of our meals this time; we brought 4 friends with us, and no-one was particularly impressed with their food. We've super loved it in the past. Half the table ordered the Salmon Wellington, and somehow it didn't please so well. One person ordered chicken paillared, which was dry.

The beef wellington was delicious, as was the clam chowder. The portions are a bit small and the prices are a bit high, but it was definitely worth it for the meal that I had.

We had a family get-together (grandparents to grandchildren) for a Sunday brunch at the restaurant. Wonderful, top-notch service. Our table ordered everything from Belgian Waffles, French Toast to Omelettes, Pasta, and sandwiches. The food was awesome for all except the waffles. It was harder than normal and a bit stale tasting. The desserts were off too -- tiramisu was old and stale, creme brulee had an after taste. Everyone else loved their omelettes, pasta, and sandwiches -- these are all highly recommended. Drinks were also very good. The server even went out of her way to make sure we got our coffees, lattes, teas, and specialty drinks.

Took my staff for a holiday lunch. Our table wasnt ready & we waited 1/2 hour. Once served everything was delicious. Unfortunately the kitchen closed before we were finished, so no dessert was available. Coffee only. Big short coming. We missed out.

We started with the crab cakes, which were fantastic. Split the Caesar salad which was topped with anchovy filets... if you like ancovhies then you’d love this salad. Then for our main course we ordered the beef Wellington and the special, pistachio crusted halibut.

Both out of this world! The beef Wellington was incredibly rich and melted in your mouth... and the halibut was perfect. All of the extras paired well together and the Sauvignon Blanc sauce was on point.

Ended the night with a nice espresso and the lava cake... great way to end a great dinner.

Also, our waitress was amazing!

We were given 2 different special menus. One was old and from the previous day. Our appetizer was served after our soup and salads. They forgot to acknowledge the birthday we were celebrating even though I put it in the reservation. The food was just okay.

Food was good but sitting next to bar was a nuisance. They have this tiny and noisy door on bar which is used by staff every 30 seconds. We were sitting next to it and it spoiled whole experience. We could get view of overflowing trash can whenever door was opened.

Service was generally poor. Our waiter seemingly looked over at us and our empty plates then failed to stop by even though he wasn't attending to any other tables at the time. The only one who paid any attention to our table was the very polite person who kept our water glasses filled and cleared our plates.

The portions were good for us which means they would be much too small for anyone else as we usually take home leftovers from any other restaurant.

The saving grace was the food was well prepared and very tasty.
