We started with the crab cakes, which were fantastic. Split the Caesar salad which was topped with anchovy filets... if you like ancovhies then you’d love this salad. Then for our main course we ordered the beef Wellington and the special, pistachio crusted halibut.
Both out of this world! The beef Wellington was incredibly rich and melted in your mouth... and the halibut was perfect. All of the extras paired well together and the Sauvignon Blanc sauce was on point.
Ended the night with a nice espresso and the lava cake... great way to end a great dinner.
Also, our waitress was amazing!
Food was good but sitting next to bar was a nuisance. They have this tiny and noisy door on bar which is used by staff every 30 seconds. We were sitting next to it and it spoiled whole experience. We could get view of overflowing trash can whenever door was opened.
Noise. Packed. Great food. Good service. Limited but good wine list. Cocktails were short on alcohol. Not a place to linger due to noise and how tightly it’s packed. Popularity speaks to the good food it has, but once again...noisy and tight.
Especially when the music starts playing... time to leave.
Service was generally poor. Our waiter seemingly looked over at us and our empty plates then failed to stop by even though he wasn't attending to any other tables at the time. The only one who paid any attention to our table was the very polite person who kept our water glasses filled and cleared our plates.
The portions were good for us which means they would be much too small for anyone else as we usually take home leftovers from any other restaurant.
The saving grace was the food was well prepared and very tasty.
It was our first time at La Fontaine -- we have wanted to try it. We had a great time. We were celebrating my Aunt's birthday and we all enjoyed the food, the energetic dining room, and the service - Nick was fantastic and did a great job taking care of everything.
This was our second visit to La Fontaine. Although the menu had changed, once again every dish was outstanding. Service was excellent. It was crowded and lively, so the noise level was fairly high.
Prices are on the high end, but the delicious meal was worth it. Two of us had the pistachio-crusted lamb chops (heavenly) with wonderful roasted potatoes and somewhat overdone mixed vegetables (the choice of vegetables was perfect, and their being overcooked was the only negative for the experience). My sister had the halibut special, which she said was delectable. My husband had the capellini, which he loved. I had the eggplant gratin (divine) and two of us had the caesar salad, which they deemed excellent. The basil lemon drop and blackberry mojito were unusual and lovely. We were all too stuffed for dessert! I can't wait to return.
Service was attentive without being obtrusive throughout. We shared appetizer, salad, pasta, and main course and they made the effort to divide the dishes where feasible (salad and pasta) and provide sharing plates otherwise. This was a nice complement to the food. The burrata and tomato appetizer was very good but had perhaps twice the balsamic vinegar it needed. The Caesar salad had particularly strong anchovy fillets (I do prefer the anchovies integrated but understand that many people don't care for anchovies even though they are essential to Caesar salad), very crisp lettuce, and properly prepared croutons. Again maybe a little more dressing than was needed. The mushroom ravioli pasta course was spectacular -- with 6 large raviolis it was a lot even when shared as a pasta course. The beef Wellington was one of the most tender pieces of meat I've ever encountered, properly medium rare throughout. However, the crust was a bit soggy rather than flaky -- really the only significant disappointment of the meal.
Every time I bring anyone to this place it is always excellent. This reservation I asked for a quiet table. They noticed this request and went the extra effort to call me. It turned out they had an entertainer playing so he made a note to give us a table away from the music. Nice.
My wife was craving some Beef Wellington. I searched for restaurants in the South Bay that served it, this one came up with some great reviews.
La Fontaine's version of Beef Wellington is a bit non-traditional. Instead of the beef being completely encased in a nice fluffy pastry, it is "wrapped" in some type of pastry, leaving both the top and bottom of the meat exposed. I can speak to the flavor of the dish being excellent. The beef (prime filet mignon) was superb, a perfect medium-rare. Was served with portabella mushrooms on top which were very succulent and earthy. The puff pastry... Was soggy.
Really, we came for what we thought would be a traditional beef wellington... ended up with something that tasted pretty damned good, but was not what we were looking for.
Eric and Hassan make the dining experience wonderful. Excellent presentation and great service. The service staff are friendly and inviting. Nick mixes the cocktails and offers suggestions.
Be here many times and will continue because of the people and food!
My wife and I had dinner here. After splitting a very good salad, we each had an entrée.
I ordered the steak frites (a rib-eye steak with shoe string potatoes), while my wife ordered
the duck breast served on a bed of wild rice and asparagus. Her duck breast was fine.
Unfortunately, my steak frites was a major disappointment. First, it was much smaller
and thinner than at any of the number of times I had it in the past. Second, it didn't have
that wonderful taste that it had previously. Third, the potatoes were short - not long and
slender shoe string potatoes, as they were in the past. Fourth, I received a very small portion
of ordinary, small French fried potatoes. Fifth, because the price of the steak frites went from $15 to $33 over the five or so years I've been dining at La Fontaine, I found my entrée to be a very poor value and will never order it again.
Service was pretty slow where food and drinks came out at different times for different people. Drinks didn't taste good and had to be sent back. Portions of the food was cold for a few people. For example, the meat would be hot, but the vegetable and potato was cold. This was an expensive meal and wasn't worth it.
Food was fantastic - vegetarian friendly. Started with the caprese and the strawberry-mango spinach salad - very fresh. Thoroughly enjoyed the mushroom truffle ravioli and the tagliolini calabrese - had a nice kick. Tiramisu was great though I'd skip the chocolate flourless torte - too sweet and not that yummy. Dinner made up for the subpar dessert. Service was decent. Only real negative is the place is VERY loud. Wish we'd sat outside.
