La Fontaine Restaurant
I reserved a table for 10, and it was waiting for us when we arrived. We ended up being only 7, arriving gradually over time, and the staff handled it elegantly.
The food - appetizers, main dish, dessert, wine were very good. (nit: my duck breast arrived well done rather than medium). The menu, including the wine list, had attractive options, and the food was well prepared.
Service throughout was excellent, attentive but not intrusive. When an additional person joined the group mid way through dinner it was handled smoothly and elegantly.
The check arrived including a 20% service charge, and tax on top of the total. The manager said "it's legal", which I don't doubt, but it felt unordinary and unnecessary, leaving a sour note.
Lovely service and excellent food. Nice selection of wine and cocktails, too. Very much enjoyed the quieter atmosphere; actually able to carry on a conversation without raising our voices. Will definitely return.
Risotta special was very good that night, but the chicken dish I ordered wasn't a good choice. Chicken texture was rubbery and tough and I couldn't even eat it.
I guess it's unrealistic to successfully find a good restaurant in the Los Altos, Mountain View, Menlo Park or Palo Alto areas on ANY night of the week that isn't pretty noisy. Our criterion is whether we have to shout across the table for two in order to hear each other. Perhaps if there hadn't been a party of 8 celebrating AND a particularly loud party of 4 senior gentlemen having an excellent time, the noise level would have been moderate at La Fontaine. But their were those parties and once again, quiet evaded us. That said, the food at La Fontaine, as well as the service, was very good, and we would recommend to any friend who wasn't particularly sensitive to that noise. We had Caesar Salad, Salmon Wellington, baked Eggplant parmesan and Orichiette with bacon, fresh tomato & basil instead of peas (substitutions welcomed). Generous portions, so our frequent take-homes are a welcome extra. I believe the Wellington was also available with beef. There's also a large selection of daily specials. Parking for Castro Street Restaurants has become very challenging, and it took us about 15 minutes PAST our reservation time to find a spot. Mountain View needs another parking garage badly, perhaps 4-stories high.
Great food and ambiance!
Went on a Monday night - very quiet as there weren't many patrons. Very exquisite service, would recommend. They serve a mean beef Wellington.
The dinner and service was good. It was ruined by a group of 8 people that were very noisy. The restaurant did not warn us and seat us to the front of the restaurant. Also, this was an anniversary and it was never acknowledged.
NOT a French restaurant. Almost everything on the menu was Italian. Food was poor, overcooked and portions too big. Service was excellent, probably because there were only 2 other tables occupied during our 1 & 1/2 hour lunch. Lovely space, but we won't return until we hear that the food has improved.
Good food but pricey. Good choice of wine. Very noisy, so not for a date.
Meh, they serve Italian food. Not good, not bad, not memorable. Really good and friendly staff though.
Food was delicious, unusual choices and a good value. I had Beef Wellington which I have not seen on a menu for a long time. Hint of mustard with vegetables in a puffed pastry. My friend had the duck which he enjoyed. We first split the appetizer/salad sampler which was a great value for only $19. We had several glasses of Merlot wine which was a bit expensive for $12. Tables were close together, and the restaurant seemed understaffed for the number of people in the place. We were there on a Monday night, and did not anticipate that it would be so busy. There was one large group with about 15 people. We enjoyed it and intend to return.
This was our first time there and the experience was very good. The service was spot on, food was good and the drinks were great. We will be back!
A charming, unassuming place with very good food. Not a lot of places nowadays offer beef Wellington! My only reservation is that we felt a bit rushed through the meal.
Great food. The short ribs with polenta were just right. Service was great on the patio, with the heat lamp on. Will visit this place again. Enjoyed the coffee with the lava cake. The lava cake was pretty small for the price, but was tasty and was complimented the coffee perfectly.
Our food was great. We sat outside. Had great service most of the evening until we were finished and ready for the check it seemed our server had disappeared for awhile but it was quickly remedied when we caught the attention of another employee. It was a Sunday evening of a holiday so it was quiet in the restaurant and I'd say fairly slow. We will definitely be back for more.
I really enjoyed my dinner. The menu had many options. We were not rushed and service was great.
If you go for ambience it is a nice place, unfortunately food is average at best and pricey for very small portions. The beet salad has 3 thin slices of beet buried under arugula, the pasta is mediocre and the entrees were average
Best neighborhood gem around Downtown Mountain View to me, bar none.
My husband and I enjoyed an awesome meal to celebrate his birthday. We started with the mixed appetizer platter since we were unfamiliar with La Fontaine's offerings. This was a large platter of four pairs of items with a central salad. I loved the bruschetta which had just the right amount of garlic; his favorite was either the melone e proscuitto or the caprese. He raved about his branzino entree, and I was very happy with a delicious bowl of orecchiette tossed with peas and bacon. We accompanied our meal with a glass of moscato and a tasty Montepulciano. We share a dazzling chocolate mousse for dessert that surprised us with the crunchy sweetness of feuilletine - wow! We look forward to our next meal at La Fontaine.
Excellent service and food. Loved the fish I had. My business partner had the steak flat bread excellent!
La Fontaine is a good restaurant for lunch. I have yet to go for dinner. The service was superb and the staff were very attentive and accommodating. I had the sea food pasta which was good but the pasta was a little over cooked and sticking together. My friend had the steak frites and enjoyed it, especially the fries.
Good for groups
Great for a lunch meeting. Casual setting, great food.
Truly fantastic service. Excellent food. Quiet and attractive ambience so we were able to converse easily at our table of 7 diners, most in their 60's. Highly recommend.
The Best food on Castro Street, Mountain View!!!
Very affordable for downtown Mountain View. But excellent food and generous portions!
Best spot in downtown Mountain View. Food is delicious, great service. Highly recommended!
The reason for a 4 and not a 5 is because we asked if a dish could be sautéed instead of fried. The server hesitated. I asked if he could check with the chef. The server said no, they were very busy and couldn’t ask. The restaurant wasn’t even half full.
Great food and service. I haven’t been to this place since it changed management a while ago but I will definitely go back.
Very nice service for a party of 7 which was appreciated
This quaint little restaurant reminded me of Italy, especially at the end of dinner when they offered complimentary limoncello. The portions of our dishes were able and the food was delicious!
Best spot in Mtn View, great food, great service, great experience
This is my favorite go-to place for excellent food, lovely atmosphere, great service.
A great dinner before preforming arts! Great service ! Always attentive but not "overseeing" No rush to finish:-)
We're definitely coming back:-)
Service was a bit on the slow side but everyone was very nice and accommodating and the food was very good
The place had a nice ambience but few people and the bread that they give as a compliment had a hair stand in it!
Entrees were very good. Wine selection was very good to great. Pricing seemed a little high, but I don't feel like I overpaid. My only complaint, the minestrone soup was average to below average. It was almost like eating Campbell's Vegetable Soup. I liked it, but it lacked being something special. I do plan on returning.
There were 7 in our group. We got the table we had requested, and our server was BEYOND wonderful! She managed to get us all fed and out the door in plenty of time for our theatre reservations. 3 of us ordered the Branzino, which was fabulous. We will keep coming back!
La Fontaine is one of the more pleasant places to have lunch in downtown Mountain View. The 3 star rating is on a very demanding scale, where Michelin starred restaurants might get 4 unless they were truly phenomenal; so "Good" means Good - no verbal inflation here. The food is traditional French/Italian - tasty, satisfying and predictable without any fashionable affectations. Service is efficient, thoughtful and unobtrusive.
