We had a lovely dinner. We chose the appetizers that were the special of the day for our meal. We paired sweet potato soup with Sopas. Both were yummy and left us very satisfied but not stuffed. We enjoyed with a red wine from Argentina. The location is perfect if you are enjoying a play at the public theater, only 5 minutes from the theater.
Excellent daily special choices--good value, presentation, and knowledgeable server. Nice to eat outside with plenty of fans and not too noisy. Overall a pleasant experience and highly recommended for date night or even a small dinner party. Definitely ask for seating outdoors; inside is rather dark. Oh yeah, the margs are terrific.
The food was very good but our waiter rushed us but will absolutely go back.
Anniversary, this is always our special place!!
Mother, daughter get together for a weekday lunch. It was perfect, grrat food and service, comfortable to linger and jus visit.
Great meal in festive setting with attentive, friendly service. Local favorite for Mexican food in an attractive setting. Only issue was the nachos (bean and cheese) are no longer (apparently) individual bites as in past. The La Fonda special is always a favorite. Will return.
Great to be back in San Antonio and have dinner here. As always the staff was friendly and polite the food is fantastic and sotto g out in the courtyard is an absolute delight
Very expensive. Food was just ok . The only positive was my wife and I had a 10 dollar off card. La Fonda Alamo Heights is much better. Maybe owned by different people.
Very nice and attentive staff. Food was very good and presented well. Guacamole was a generous portion.
La Fonda came highly recommended for it's outside seating area. I reserved an outside table for this reason. However, I was disappointed to be seated a plastic table and chairs. I was expecting something more classier. When the food arrived so did the swarm of flies. We couldn't eat in peace or keep the flies from landing on our food as we ate. It was highly frustrating and ruined our Mother's Day outing. I would not sit outside again or recommend anyone sitting outside at this location. The fans did not help keep the fans away and you need a bug zapper to eliminate the pests from swarming the table when food arrives.
My in-laws were in town visiting for Mother's Day and we dined at La Fonda on Main at my Mother-in-law's request. We were seated immediately (just after 4pm) and shortly thereafter, the young, lead hostess approached our table and informed us that there was another party scheduled to be seated at our table at 5:30.I suppose this was her subtle (yet highly unprofessional) way of letting us know that we would have to rush through our meal to accommodate the next reservation. Needless to say, this was not a pleasant way to start off our Mother's Day dining experience. Despite this "warning", it took a bit of time for our server to reach our table. When he finally greeted us, he seemed flustered and very tired (which I suppose is common for restaurant personnel on a holiday as such). In an attempt to be cooperative diners, we ordered our appetizers immediately and our entrees shortly thereafter. We were still enjoying our delicious appetizers of diablitos and poblano shrimp nachos when our entrees arrived (which added to the "please hurry" vibe that were given at the beginning of our meal). I had to ask that my appetizer plate not be removed so that I could finish the shrimp nacho that I was still eating. Three of us ordered the trucha divorciada, as recommended by our server, but two of our plates were served without the shrimp escabeche (which eventually arrived after our server had to "find them"). The menu description of the dual seasoned trout sounded delicious but we found the fish to be bland and lacking any distinct guajillo pasilla or jalapeno chimichurri flavor. The escabeche, however, was a nice addition to the plate. We ordered both of the dessert specials, chocolate flan and sweet potato cheesecake. The flan was tasty but the cheesecake was divine and a made for a creamy, delicious ending to our whirlwind Mother's Day meal.
food was way overpriced and a bit cold. they sat us by the kitchen which was also next to the waiter station. so we constantly had waiters walking past our table. they were plenty of other tables that were empty.
Amazing service and food! We will go again.
Mother’s Day brunch
Hands down the best Mexican food in San Antonio as well as some of the best food in the city period!
We’ve loved this restaurant since we moved here 25 years ago. Consistently good authentic mexican food. Always a good dining experience.
Birthday dinner La Fonda didn’t disappoint! Sean our waiter was awesome made some wonderful suggestions! We will be back soon!
TexMexMax and contemporary items for the hipsters and nontrads.
Took family from out of town. Food and service were excellent as always. A family favorite. Patio seating is a must.
Terrific food! Terrific ambiance! terrific service!
Well done Mexican food served in a sophisticated setting.
Perfect evening! Love sitting on the patio under the big oak trees! Food and service are always amazing!
Always great food and a wonderful atmosphere. Cappy the owner is also a great guy and friend. Love this place!
I used to go to La Fonda on Main 50 years ago when I was in high school. We went there on Fridays for lunch since my school was literally just around the corner. At that time La Fonda on Main was arguably the best Tex-Mex in San Antonio. The flavors harkened back to the days of the Chili Queens in downtown San Antonio and the advent of what was to become Tex-Mex. I was hoping to find some of the old-school dishes again with the flavors I so fondly remember. Yes, they still exist; not quite to the level they did half a century ago but still good. The others in our group ordered more current items that more closely resemble authentic Mexican. While it is virtually impossible to find the "old style" San Antonio Tex-Mex restaurant anymore, La Fonda still impresses and the margaritas are some of the best in the city.
A regular Sunday after church destination for our family!
The food at la Fonda is always good, fresh an d well prepared. If you have a choice eat outside. We had a gathering of 6 and wanted to add one more seat. We did have a reservation. The hostess was extremely rude to our party and said you will have to wait another hour. I sat in the bar till the party was seated and the waiter just added a chair to our table. Highlights were the shrimp nachos, shrimp omelet and Mexican French toast(spicy)
There are few better places to be than with an old friend enjoying a creative brunch on a beautiful San Antonio weekend morning, on the La Fonda patio under that massive live oak. Friendly, unhurried, professional service. Not an extensive menu, but some classic dishes, along with a few more inventive options. We both had different and delicious twists on Eggs Benedict with potato and onion hash and fruit. It's a classic restaurant that never lets me down when I bring an out-of-town visitor.
Once again La Fonda on Main does not disappoint! I had the shrimp poblano nachos as I often do and the chef had tried a new version with avocados in a spicy sauce instead of serrano peppers.... it was exquisite!! A brilliant combination of flavors and textures! Well done La Fonda!
With all the hype, it was very disappointing. Bland, overpriced food.
This is one of our all-time favorite restaurants. The only thing they can do to improve is have homemade corn tortillas.
We have not been to LaFonda on Main for over 5 years and it clicked that we needed to go. We are all so glad we did - it is still outstanding and we must return more often.
La Fonda's food is always great. I love the chicken relleno and enchilada suiza plate. The specials are always very creative. Service was slow this visit, but I will go again. I love that this restaurant is walking distance from my house
The food was very good!
Took out of town guests here for their 40th Anniversary. What a hit! From the waitstaff, to the management, to the delicious food on their gorgeous courtyard -- the Sunday lunch at La Fonda on Main was the perfect ending to a celebratory weekend. Couldn't be more pleased!
I am new to the San Antonio area and I was pleasantly surprised by La Fonda. The restaurant's decor is lovely as well as the outdoor seating area which has a grand tree. The service was excellent and my guest and I were happy with our brunch selections. I will definitely be back for more. Highly suggest reservations as people who were walking up for a Sunday brunch were told that they had to wait 1.5 hours.
We sat outside in the beautiful patio. The food was great, as was the service. Very enjoyable dining experience.
We were visiting from out of town and this place was recommended by our hosts. We made a reservation a few hours before as was recommended to us. If you can reserve a seat in the outdoor patio I would highly recommend if the weather is nice. The patio looked lovely. We were sat inside since we reserved more last minute. When our food arrived we were both amazed how delicious it was. I ate every bite and will definitely return if I am back in the area. Many people were dressed up for dinner but since we were being tourists Allie day showed up in shirts and t shirts and that was okay too. But the restaurant was a bit nicer than my outfit. Don’t let that stop you. I now feel like all other Mexican food will be compared to this place. Not sure they can compare. We got two desserts to go. Tres leches and chocolate cake. They were just okay. Which we were surprised by since the dinner was a amazing. Highly recommend this place still.
Our favorite Mexican restaurant. Great food, good service and the patio seating is very special.
I typically have great experiences at La Fonda on Main. However, this time, my experience left me not wanting to come back. Our waiter turned in our order incorrectly and did not apologize when he did so. He then overcharged our table $21. Following the lack of sympathy and poor service he had provided, we literally saw him pointing to our table, asking the manager to ask us to leave. The manager then proceeded to do so, which is incredibly rude. It was fiesta weekend but it was apparent that our business was not of importance.
