Had a great meal with work colleagues-highly recommend the Jalapeño Cucumber margarita! Food was delicious and friendly service in a fun, casual atmosphere!
When making a reservation online there SHOULD be an option to select Outdoor/Patio Dining. I made a reservation around 5pm for 7pm Sunday, when I arrived I advised I wanted to sit Outdoors and they told me I needed to wait until after 8pm. Not very happy!
Our server seemed to be more bothered by us than anything. From the get go, when we told her we were splitting a meal, she was aloof. We were totally out of salsa, she brought new chips, but no salsa, and we had to ask for it. We had to get someone else to fill our drinks. Then there was the bone in the duck tacos. I know things like that happen, and yes, the meal was compensated, which was appreciated, but I it still leaves you with a bad feeling. What if the bone had been swallowed, or broke a tooth? Anyway, all in all, we love the food, and will return at some point.
Whenever I have a friend in town… From Paris or Italy or Kansas City or New York or Costa Rica… I always go to Lafonda and I am never disappointed: they always compliment me on having such a wonderful neighborhood restaurant to go to!
I chose La Fonda as a special treat for out of state guests. We were seated in the courtyard at my request. The specials were imaginative and delicious. Our waiter was outstanding. We had a great experience.
La Fonda is such a charming restaurant. They have delicious vegetarian options (some of which can be made vegan - though I wish there were more of these options on the menu) and are a fantastic place to take visitors.
Server was very busy and wasn’t as attentive, so it wasn’t as perfect as usual.
The food is good, but it should be since the restaurant has been around since the 1950s or 60s. It is relatively expensive for good Tex-Mex food.
We've been to this restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. Decided to take an out-of-town guest and he, too, was very pleased with the food and service.
Dinner was very good. The only problem was that a fan was on that was blowing our hair a lot. We asked for it to be turned down and were told that wouldn't happen. After the chips blew into my lap and purse, my friend went to demand that we be moved or the fan adjusted. A manager came and turned it off.
Great food, great service, very nice atmosphere. Wife and I came here from Austin to dine and we were not disappointed. Marcelino gave great service. Menu was good and food seemed authentic. I cleaned my plate and my wife's plate too.
Wonderful food and ambiance. Service was a bit slow to begin, but then improved. Perfect evening to dine outside.
Seated us promptly, food was excellent and we ate on the patio and it was lovely!
It was rated #1 by TripAdvisor so we decided to give it a try. It is a very old restaurant and even though we had both visited SA many times over the past 40 years, we had never tried this restaurant. Big mistake on our part. It is exceptional, with excellent food and a fantastic wait staff. The outdoor patio was awesome. And a very good value. We will now make the long 3 hour drive every once just to eat at this restaurant. Cheers to Monica our servers who made our first visit "excellente".
Sat on the patio. It's heated from below. Food was outstanding as was the service. Highly recommended. Great margaritas!
The food was delicious and filled with a variety of classic Tex-mex items. The margaritas are also especially tasty.
The food was amazing, and really shows how good the tex-mex in San Antonio is. Not to mention the flan which also knocked it out of the park.
However, the service I received was very sub-par. It appeared there was a party or group dining in the hall attached to the restaurant, and instead of having a dedicated team of servers, there were a smattering of servers from the main dining area. This led to several instances where I needed my waiter, only to see them outside serving people in the party hall. To top it off, the other waiters and waitresses who were not part of the party serving group, stood around and did nothing while I was very clearly waiting on someone to come by. Because this was my first time, I can't say that this is to be expected, but it was very off putting and annoying.
Overall, this place is worth a visit, and you can't go wrong with their enchilada plate.
La Fonda on Main never disappoints, and this evening was no exception. The food and service were phenomenal--superlative, actually. But be sure to eat at this location; the other two locations (Oak Hills and Alamo Heights) are owned by different corporations--they can't hold a candle to this beautiful location.
We’ve typically had amazing service and intuitive waiters but Zeke just hardly came to our table. At one point he was pouring more water for us while we were talking aloud about ordering our next drink. When he was finished pouring he just turned and walked away without a word. We still love La Fonda and this waiter was not a deal breaker. He was just not like any others that we’ve had!
Food was excellent. You can Mexican food here that just is not found anywhere else in San Antonio. The items are prepared with. Presentation is beautiful. Our service was Ok. There was nothing really wrong with it, but there was nothing special about it, either. Chips and salsa could have been attended to better. It is a very nice restaurant, and we will certainly return. The chicken diablito appetizers were outstanding. I had enfrijoladas, which I never see on a menu here. My wife had steak tampiquena and very satisfied. The mango margaritas were great.
Fabulous food - can’t get enough of the duck tacos!!!
Had a nice meal at LFOM last evening. Had a reservation and was promptly seated as requested outside. However the host did try to steer me off to an inside seat bs outside, but I voiced my objection and he then seated me outside as requested. Food was good, not great, just good. Service also was good, not great. Have been here many times in the past when the food was exceptionally good, so was a bit disappointed in the overall experience last night. I love the ambiance of the place especially the courtyard area. I do hope the food preparation improves next time I visit.
This was my first visit to La Fonda on Main since the interior was renovated and I love the fresh, new look from the much needed "makeover". Dora, my server, was wonderful and I will be sure and request her for my next visit. She was most patient and helpful in relaying my questions and special requests to the kitchen and checked on my needs and satisfaction at appropriate intervals throughout the meal. I started with the soup du jour, which was a creamy and flavorful chipotle cauliflower bisque. It was subtly spiced and had the perfect smooth texture which was accented with the comfort food additions of butter (in lieu of cream) and shredded cheddar cheese (pureed cauliflower casserole in a bowl!). I had a difficult time choosing my entree; I was torn between the recently added trucha divociada (trout with two different rubs) and the shrimp enchiladas. I had the enchiladas when I first visited LFM years ago and had a wonderful sensory memory of how much I loved the dish. Perhaps they have changed the recipe (or perhaps my taste buds have changed?) because the sauce was not nearly as tasty as I remember and it seemed to have an almost overly cinnamon-esque flavor and the filling would have benefited from a few more shrimp. Nonetheless, I look forward to a return visit to get my fix of the spicy poblano shrimp nachos (always a good choice!) and I WILL ask for Dora AND try the new trout dish! (and save room for tres leches or flan!).
Most disappointing level of service I have had at La Fonda in over three decades—yes I said in over 30 years!
Out of town friends.
Tasty food, yet overpriced for what you get. Our waitress was overloaded with tables so service was slow, but the ambience made up for it. All in all, a good night out. I will probably try again on a weeknight instead.
We dined there twice while visiting San Antonio. Both times were great but, they are busy, so a reservation is a must.
A real treat and a San Antonio icon. They don't rest on their laurels. Service was prompt and professional, food was delightful. It had been 40 years since my last visit. Hope it won't be that long before we get back to San Antonio.
Excellent food, service and classic old San Antonio ambiance. Mexican on the River Walk is fine for the view but then come to La Fonda.
We have been here many times. If not for that we might not go back. The main courses were good. The guacamole was WAY too hot and this is not typical. It was very noisy. The waiter was the worst we've ever had. Maybe they had too many tables but SOMEONE should've refilled my drink. We also had to go to the hostess stand to get our check brought to us.
Rib appetizer was amazing.
Guacamole spicy but....so good.
Had great specialty margaritas!
Candice was the best server. Food was incredible. Shrimp nachos were light, exquisitely seasoned, and well cooked.
Our La Fonda experience was an an excellent one! Coming back next year!
We had a wonderful time. La Fonda on Main is a welcoming, customer-friendly place to share a meal. We have had many enjoyable moments in Mr. Lawton's establishments, and this was no exception.
Easy parking, beautiful setting, excellent food. Already looking forward to my next opportunity to eat here.
Definitely worth the drive and best of the 3 locations. I live at the RIM and have visited that location a few times and went to the Main ST location for the first time after visiting the RIM and will only go back to the Main st even though it's out of the way. The service and quality of food is far superior and the ambiance is better too. I made friends drive from comfort to this location and we had such a great time. Sean was our server and had great recommendations for substitutes since some items we were interested were unavailable, everyone ate their entire meal. Portions are perfect too.
