La Fonda on Main Ratings and Reviews
Friend from out of town popped in for a day. We relaxed on the patio at this reliable restaurant and enjoyed a lovely lunch. First time trying the salmon with chipotle sauce. Very good but enjoyed the vegetables even more. Was expecting hohum steamed ones and received wonderfully grilled ones instead.
The service was great, everyone’s meal, except mine was fair to good. Not great, but good. My meal was terrible! I ordered the shish kebab over rice. The rice was fine and the skewered vegetables were ok. The pork and “steak” meat was under cooked and was full of gristles. It would appear to me that if you are serving 4 tiny pieces of meat on a $19.00 dinner, the chef would at least select tender and attractive cuts. These were not! I did not complain and picked up the check because the friends that we were with recommended the restaurant. We travel through San Antonio often, but we will not return to this restaurant. SAD!
I always enjoy dining in the La Fonda patio. The drinks are good, the patio is beautiful, the wait staff are great. Food is sometimes very good and other times only OK. The last time I was there I ordered the shrimp in butter garlic sauce over rice. The shrimp were delicious but the rice was kind of clumpy and had bits of cheese in it (I don't eat dairy) and seemed to have been reheated. I"ll continue to recommend La Fonda for the patio, drinks, and chips and salsa.
Cappy's La Fonda is an outstanding restaurant in every way. Cappy serves inspired Tex-Mex cuisine in a pleasantly traditional setting with superbly trained servers. Patio dining is especially nice. It is a neighborhood gem, but it is also worth going out of one's way to dine there if you are visiting San Antonio to experience the best that San Antonio has to offer. La Fonda is festive, fun and delicious.
We were very disappointed with the overall finish experience. Typically La Fonda on main provides better services. We added a chair to our party and that delayed our seating by 32 minutes although the hostess communicated it would only be 20 minutes. When we were finally seated the hostess communicated that there were no high chairs available. We have four children and our youngest is 18 months. Needless to say it was very challenging holding and entertaining an 18 Mo old on a lap. When we left we walked out the back and found two high chairs stacked (we think the hostess forgot to go and look). Food was good, price point was fine. Margarita was subpar this evening but the La Paloma was great. Hope that La Fonda gets it right the next time or we will be changing up our Mexican food dining options.
