View Private Dining DetailsLa Fonda is our No. 1 stop every visit to San Antonio. Food, service, and environment keep us coming back! Enjoy!!!
La Fonda on Main is day in day out one of the best Mexican food restaurants in San Antonio, and that's saying a lot! Tender meat, flavorful cheeses, perfect combinations of spices, and the best chips and tortillas around make La Fonda a perennial favorite. One of the restaurants we go to for special occasions or an every day treat!
La Fonda is a San Antonio institution that never fails to do a good job. The salsa that comes with the chips is lovely, spicier than most items on the menu. I have always enjoyed the seafood here and the Mexican Paella special was really very good - not overwrought like most paellas. Margaritas were solid although I do wish they had tap beer or local beer.
We enjoy your resturant. Made my reservation on line- wish I could of reserved for seating outside.
Also, your resturant had a large function outside.
Always delicious. Great service and wonderful margaritas. The patio is lovely and there was a mariachi band that entertained us beautifully.
Anniversary experience was outstanding
Excellent meal. Authentic Tex-Mex. You have to sit outside if it is nice. GREAT PATIO!!
We enjoyed the evening. All met our expectations
Delicious and low key. Highly recommend. Great casual setting for a business dinner
The food here is a cut above your average Mexican food and was an excellent recommendation to me from a Lyft driver. My British friend had been looking for a 'real' Mexican food and were told that this was the place to go to in San Antonio. I had the chili poblano and the sauce on it was sublime. Our server was excellent as well, and the atmosphere very tasteful and elegant- not tacky like some of the places along Riverwalk. Highly recommended!
We have dined here on previous visits to San Antonio. This time my brother and son were with us so we wanted them to experience La Fonda on Main. They very much liked the place. We'll be back the next time we're in San Antonio.
Great food and awesome service. Waiter was spot on with the recommendations and very attentive. Outside seating on a nice night is the way to go. Highly recommend this place.
Beautiful place. Excellent food. Service was a little spotty.
This place is a San Antonio classic. If you can go to only one Mexican restaurant. The ambience is excellent the food made with fresh ingredients Blackened fish tacos excellent. All the specialty platters well done. Don’t miss The skinny top shelf margaritas. The guacamole is superb. Eat on the patio.... just lovely
We went to celebrate a graduation. We were a party of 6 and happened to be a lot earlier than our reservation. They were able to seat us early and were very friendly and kind. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and the food was outstanding! The six of us all ordered something different and everyone was so happy with their meal! The handmade tortillas for the tacos are amazing and the nachos were a perfect appetizer.
This place is very busy! Reservations are a must to enjoy this place!
Our first disappointing experience at a neighborhood go to.
We are regulars but usually just walk in at off hours, as this was a peak time dinner I made a 7.30 reservation on OT.
We were not seated until 8.05, in that time no manager or host approached our bar table with an offer of even salsa and chips or apology.
After complaining to the host when we were finally seated the manager brought us over comp apps, very nice, but should have happened 20 mins earlier before we started feeling neglected and ignored
Love having lunch & dinner at La Fonda On Main. Have celebrated my birthday & special
occasions there.
The food and service were excellent and I would recommend it.
Me and my girlfriend had a date night and were celebrating a birthday together. I decided to make a reservation and surprise her with this trip. Everything went perfectly well. From the food to the drinks to the food to the service. Thank you La Fonda.
Fantastic Mexican restaurant. Delicious food and drinks, impeccable service. We were visiting San Antonio from Los Angeles and glad to have eaten here at lunch time. I am sure dinner here is fantastic as well. Well worth the price. Will definitely eat here again. A shout out to Monica our wonderful and enthusiastic server!
We have been to La Fonda on Main over a hundred times and live in the neighborhood. Friday night we reserved a table outside for a family member’s 90th birthday. I called during the day to reconfirm and was told reservation was set and sever would know about our special occasion. First, at no point in the evening did the server recognize or mention our very special birthday guest. Second, the service was inattentive owing to over-challenged staff, and third the food was mediocre to poor. The chips in our basket were actually stale. I don’t even know how that happens in a restaurant that is always so busy. We love going to La Fonda because it is a beautiful historic place in the neighborhood and the courtyard is wonderful. However, they have some serious Quality Control issues which they need to get under their belt. We hope they do because we would like this to once again be a bright star in the neighborhood.
Food was ok...expensive for what you get. The service was excellent. The server was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant itself was nice and tons of parking.
Nice place. Thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance. The food was very good. It's traditional Mexican food with a modern twist. Good combo.
We ate on the patio and it was magical! The food was delicious. Highly recommend the enchiladas verdes and the gold margaritas. It was all wonderful!
A great dining experience, top to bottom.
My date had a great experience and so did I, great as always...
The Latins restaurants always will run. I enjoyed the Gulf shrimp tacos. Appreciated they use good quality ingredients.
I go often to La Fonda and was not disappointed. The pose verde was better than any I have had in Santa Fe... simply delicious! And the diabolito appetizer was the perfect bite of spice! Another delicious meal!
Didn’t know what to expect initially. We live out of town but was intrigued that La Fonda was the oldest Mexican Food restaurant in San Antonio and well rated. This gem did NOT disappoint! La Fonda appears to have a very established clientele (old, young, families, etc). The staff was very friendly and attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was absolutely superb- especially the pork chop - yummy! I will make this a staple when I travel back to San Antonio. Finally... sit on the patio if the weather is nice - simply beautiful!
Enjoy!
I was very impressed with the service. My guest has Celiac and our server, Monica, was informed and helpful and ensured he enjoyed a full dining experience.
Outdoor seating is a must if the weather is nice. The back patio is gorgeous and was so enjoyable.
I requested outdoor seating when booking through Open Table. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was told they do not read the comment section of Open Table and could not honor my request. I expressed my disappointment especially because it was our Easter dining plan. The restaurant did nothing to make up for the oversight. A free drink or dessert would have helped smoothed things over. I won’t go back.
A really great place to have a fun dinner. Outstanding food
We eat here all the time. The food and services is always great.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in town, but I felt treated like I was "less than" for making my reservation through Open Table for whatever reason. I called well in advance to confirm the reservation and request a possible table outside as well as a highchair. I was told "that wasn't going to happen" since I booked through OpenTable. I booked it in the middle of the night out of convenience, but needless to say, won't be doing it again.
La Fonda on Main never disappoints, and this visit was no exception. Because we arrived just after the Saturday dinner crush, we were able to enjoy the exceptional food in a relatively quiet atmosphere. The food is invariably fantastic. The combination of excellent food, attentive service, and a lovely neighborhood setting makes for an ideal evening.
Thank you very much
La Fonda is where we go in San Antonio when we want to celebrate a special occasion, although we find other excuses to go too!!!
Get the queso fundido! We skipped the meat portion and just had the mushrooms + cheese—delicious! Rest of the meal was good too—shrimp enchiladas, chicken enchiladas, beef fajitas and enchiladas callejeras. Excellent margaritas, and decent portions for the price. Definitely a nice place to get together at.
