La Esquina Ratings and Reviews
I was impressed with the way you enter the restaurant (didn’t realize it was on the basement level). Also, I like the decor and the ambiance. However, the food was very expensive for meager portions. My bill was $81 for cheese dip with fried tortilla chips, four tacos, two margaritas and two beers. I could’ve paid less than half for equally good food and more substantive portions elsewhere. Although the food was delicious, I will not be back. Way too bourgeois for me.
Second time dining here. Always impressed. Food is quite exceptional. We had the cheese fundito with crispy tortilla and an array of tacos along with tostadas. Everything was really good. Bartender was quick with our drinks when we arrived before we sat. Waiter was attentive and quick with service. Always checking in if we needed anything. No room for dessert everything was sooo good. Don’t ever forget the world famous corn. It’s worth a cob each. We split two cons four ways. I’m dreaming about having more.
La Esquina wast'n as special as in other occasions that I had been there. Our table was stumbling all night, I guess that it had a shorter leg in one side or something like that, what it makes it very uncomfortable to go through the dinner while dealing with that, you guys have to make sure the tables don't do this before seating the people. Our waitress apparently was so busy that she forgot our drinks and bring then about 30+ minutes later than when we order them right by the time that we sit on the table, that was one very bad thing, then there where no plates by the time the food arrived to the table, knowing that the majority of the small plates and entrees you serve are to share and you will need empty plates to have your food in, there was another 10 minutes waiting for the empty plates to arrive. And as if this wasn't enough, the waitress seems to had the wrong attitude every time she came to our table... I honestly consider leaving without giving any tip because of the lack in service she gave us, but at the end I did leave the 20% tip as I always use to do, because if the tip is to be share equally between all the personnel of the restaurant, then it wouldn't have been fair for me to do that. I feel disappointed about this visit to the restaurant and hope that you guys can work something out to improve the service, because I really like the ambient and the food, and I had been coming to La Esquina for many years as it's one of my favorite restaurants of the city.
This place is dope. My wife found this spot from a celeb reference and we booked a table about a month in advance. The food is great and reasonably priced. They have lots of items that are good to share in a group or on a date. I think the best part of this location is the ambiance since it’s “underground” and it has a cool vibe.
The food here is always incredible I just wish our server would be more attentive to our requests. I ordered drinks for my mom and dad but my dad’s drink took about 25!! Minutes to come out with no explanation given. Our server offered a special of ribs and I asked if it’s beef or pork and she said beef, it was pork! I don’t eat pork- had to send it back. Asked for a drink for myself, one ingredient was missing from out and instead of asking me if I prefer something else she just brought it without it, which was the reason I ordered the drink... sent it back. She sent us a dish we didn’t order, we said that not ours but it was on the bill, we had to ask to take it off. A place like that I would expect a better service to go a long with their amazing food... I will go again and hope for a much better server.
We were very excited to try this restaurant. Certainly a place that is difficult to get a reservation. The bartender was great as were the drinks. We were very disappointed in the food that was not very tasty. We had the Chile Rellenos. Bland and tasteless. The shrimp tacos were good, but we were expecting amazing based upon reviews of this placed. Loved the ambience and the décor, but that is about it.
The food is so delicious. The elotes were to amazing and my shrimp tacos were utterly delightful. I had a passion fruit margarita which I definitely could've gone without. It was nothing to scream about and it was $14. If it weren't for the fact that shrimp tacos are only available in the downstairs restaurant I would not go back. Simply because I could get the same food at the upstairs window for cheaper. Overall I would go again anytime I was in the area.
Small plates not a lot of food, we were charge 6 usd for tap water, food is expensive for mexican food is know for. The service need to improve because even though a mistake was made several times to our check ; we try to be polaite aboutit but their customer service was not the best.
The fun of this place is that it is akin to a SpeakEasy. The address takes you to a walk-up diner-type joint, cool if you are ordering a hot dog and shake, but not what was expected for a $$$ Mexican restaurant. What you learn (after asking several people where La Esquina is) is that you enter thru the front, go thru the kitchen, down a flight of stairs (fairly steep so careful if you find stairs a problem), thru a couple of hallways to the dining area. Which you'll find is super cool once you get there. Ambiance, lighting, bar, seating areas are all top notch. Now the negatives. No quac (my first question AND the 4'some who sat next to us = clue maybe?), no chips/salsa (that's just wrong!) (DO order the Fundido - it's excellent), and the tacos were just "fine." They weren't bad at all, they just were "fine." The soft tacos come in two's are are normal-size for a street-taco. (The server suggested that we might need more than just an order each for both me and my adult daughter, so we ordered a third flavor. It was too much, the two orders (one for each) would have been fine. So, bottom line, for all of the hype and expectation on the front end, the back end was a tad disappointing. I was just expecting "great." But definitely worth seeing and experiencing.
I had dinner at La Esquina with my boyfriend who is here from out of town and the service was terrible. The server blatantly tried to upsell us at every interaction and basically rushed us out the door. We got our bill without asking for it when we still had half a margarita each and hadn't decided yet if we wanted another. We were excited to have a date night there but it was an awful experience. Pretty disappointed.
I took my husband and a few close family members (cousins, sister-in-law, etc.) here for my husband's 30th bday. We had a blast. Getting a reservation (even a month in advance) was difficult, so we arrived at 11:30 and only had nachos, drinks and desserts. The food wad all good. The service was...fine? Not memorable by any means. We were very hands down there for the ambiance. I didn't tell anyone it was a speakeasy so they were all super surprised/pumped by the cool "employees only" entrance door. The music was loud and awesome, but we were all joking how the DJ could literally not stick to one song for more than 45 seconds. We'd be getting into a song and then bam! on to the next. haha. Anyway, all in all the fun vibe of this place makes up for any other short comings.
