Overall, it was a good experience. There were several things that prevent me from giving a higher rating. 1. The Bravas sauce was ketchup, which is an insult to Spanish cuisine. The sauce is supposed to be made with pimentón, not Heinz ketchup. 2. I returned the patatas bravas twice, and a manager never showed up which to me means they don’t care what the patrons think of their food. 3. The waitress dropped a can of conserves in the floor and never sent anyone to clean it. After about 15 minutes I stopped another waiter to get someone to clean it. 4. I requested to go boxes and the waitress said she had come to the table to ask if we wanted more beer, so again I had to stop another waiter to get the boxes.
Excellent start to finish
What a wonderful experience tonight. Great service, wine, food and of course dessert.
Lovely spot to celebrate my bday, even if they did seat me in the back because I was a single, which I protested. The food was delicious, especially the meatballs and the patatas bravas. Could enlarge the croquetas - they were tiny and you only get two. Anna, my server, was very sweet, and the bday dessert just hit the spot. They have an extensive wine list and I definitely will come back for more!
Great food, and excellent service.
Delicious food, excellent service, nice atmosphere. 100% recommended
We had a delightful experience celebrating with friends who have been married 50 years. The food was delicious, the service impeccable. This is our third time at La Cuchara...we would come more often if the wine list were not so expensive.
This review, and our feelings about the restaurant, are completely colored by the dismal experience at the hands of our server. She was the strangest combination of intrusive and diffident. Dinner conversation was impossible because she constantly interrupted. When we needed help she was absent. This was our first time dining here and she provided no guidance at all about portion sizes; she promised to “course” everything but at times 3 of us had multiple plates in front of us at once and one person had nothing.
It wasn’t fun or pleasant and while the food tasted good, there’s plenty of good food in Baltimore and I won’t be going back here.
Food was good
Weekdays are always nice, quiet. Food was great. Highly recommend sword fish. Melts in your mouth.
Not a Spanish restaurant, as advertised, even less so Basque cuisine. Extremely noisy; a huge place and, yet, nearly every guest was seated in one room, with a large party of 15 guests plus children, celebrating very loudly. Service was good, but I can’t say the same about the food. Yet, they do offer a decent selection of wines and beer, and a few entry-level Sherry from Jerez de la Frontera.
Easily one of the top restaurants in town. The only thing better than the food and ambiance are the knowledgeable staff!
Every bite, every sip was wonderful. Our 4th visit and it always delights.
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner, complete with a complementary sparkling dessert wine. The food was delicious and ambiance was upscale. Highly recommend.
We went for our anniversary dinner. The ambiance was lovely. The staff were accommodating. The food was excellent. We can't wait to go back.
Every time I have been to La Cuchara has been a delight. Service is exemplary on all fronts. The food is delicious and the Sommelier makes excellent suggestions based on your preferences. Definitely a place I will keep coming back to.
What a great dinner for our small group of friends! Food, wine, and service were all on-point. Highly recommend.
We got a few tapas and the salmon and everything was delicious. Service was attentive. It’s a cool location and a good looking restaurant. All I wish there’d been was some music. Gotta have music.
Overall, fantastic as usual.
Really cool spot! Menu looks crazy, but Gavin explained everything well, and the food was awesome! Can’t wait to make it back for the grilled calamari, it had some nice heat and was cooked perfectly.
I've had dinner, drinks, and tapas at La Cuchara many times. I live in the neighborhood and I love the restaurant. The food is delicious and the service is usually professional and friendly at the same time. But I was dismayed by the dinner I had there last night. A good friend of mine from Barcelona gave my 11 year old son a gift card from La Cuchara for his birthday, because he was such an adventurous eater when we went to Spain with them. So after a year of putting it off, we took him and our sixteen year old son there for dinner last night. We figured that on a Sunday night it would be okay to take two well-behaved kids there, and I'd seen kids at the restaurant before. For some reason, they seated us in the bar area, though there were plenty of tables in the restaurant. Perhaps because they assumed a 16 year old boy and an 11 year old boy would be loud? At any rate, our server was so caught up in being hip and cool, that he made no effort to hide his disdain at our party--again, I guess because we brought two kids with us. When his pen dropped onto our tomato bread as he served it, there was an opportunity for him to act a bit more human, but he offered no apology and simply asked me to remove the bread that the pen had fallen directly on and brought us one new slice in a large bowl, as if he somehow felt it was our fault that had happened and wanted to make it as awkward as possible. Though we ordered a big dinner with a variety of dishes, and wine, thus insuring him of a good tip, he was rude and standoffish the entire night. Maybe he should go to Spain, where he could learn that children are valued, that kids can have sophisticated palates, and that food is about friends and pleasure, not about posing as some kind of sophisticate.
I would recommend this restaurant, food was good but not mindblowing, in a lot of cases it was a take on Basque pintxos, which is fine but it is not as authentic. Service was very good and attentive. Noise level was pretty high.
Outstanding menu, and a really attractive place, clearly designed by a practiced eye. We were very well treated. Glad we went at 7; it was packed to the rafters by 8.
This is my second time back to La Cuchara. The wine flight is exceptional and offers a variety of wines to try, all very tasteful. My favorite by far is the fried oysters which are crunchy and creamy and delicious. The duck empanadas had no duck flavor and could have been any type of ground meat, quite disappointing. I had the bronzino entree which was delicious which included one filet of fish. I was a bit surprised as a few weeks ago I had the same dish with trout which came with 2 filets. It appeared as though the portion was half the size. Not sure if they were running out of fish but surprised to see only one filet which wasn’t so big. The blistered sheshito peppers are very tasty with a great romesco sauce. Also shared the lamb shoulder which was very tasty but a bit fatty. All in all, a very enjoyable meal. Will return.
La Cuchra is everything and more that people have been saying about this restaurant. The service overall was exceptional, and the food is wonderful in every respect.
My only complaint is that the restaurant became very noisy around 7:30, so much so, it was really difficult to talk to others at our table without nearly having to shout.
While a bit on the pricy side, the food and service make you want to come back again and again. We certainly will!
Food was fabulous. The evening was relaxed and enjoyable. The service team allowed us to enjoy and savor the courses. We never felt rushed.
Always a fantastic experience with great food and wine. Make sure to ask for Red the sommelier who can chart out some great picks that you’ve surely never heard of before. I truly believe this is the best restaurant in Baltimore!
What can I say? Daughter brought me here for my birthday and it was beyond delicious. True Basque food preparation and presentation. Love love love this place. Go you will not be disappointed
Highly recommend, a must on your dinner try around town.
Great and varied tapas. Great wine selection lovely wait staff. In nicer weather, sitting outside on the patio is quite lovely. And both the patio and the bar have happy hour specials before 7 PM.
always enjoy the food, drinks, service and atmosphere at La Cuchara! This time around tried the scallops and of course some pinxtos...deliciousness beyond!
Food was OK, Service was lacking, our server never told us her name, never smiled, could not get the check at the end, etc. For a place of this supposed caliber the meal was not worth the price. we will have to give another try because we hear good things from friends.
Amazing food and drinks!
Went here for my birthday - we arrived early and started at the bar. First off, this restaurant is tucked away on Union avenue and you'd expect an older building/etc. but the design of the restaurant's interior is amazing. The bar in the middle is surrounded by all sides, and as soon as you walk in you see the many breads/cheeses/meats used in the charcuterie-type spreads accompanied by all of their alcohol selection.
The bartender was great and we started off with a few plates including potatas bravas.
Once we reached our reservation time, we sat outside and ordered a few more tapas and I ordered the lamb shoulder. My girlfriend ordered a series of tapas because none of the main vegetarian options stood out. It was easy to order because of the variety of appealing options as well as the knowledge of each staff member.
Everything was amazing- perfect sized portions, flavor, presentation, and timeliness. They were kind enough to provide a mango sorbet dessert, while we also ordered the churros. Overall this is my new favorite place to sit either at a restaurant bar or to sit outside. They mentioned that on Sundays there is half-off all wine bottles and they made the joke that their $1,200 bottle would be a steal, but we may take them up on the offer with a $40 bottle instead.
Great food, and our server provided recommendations for a lovely wine pairing. Every course was perfect.
It's an expensive but delicious way to dine. You have an opportunity to try a lot of different recipes but the cost can be considerable and sneaks up on you...
15 year wedding anniversary dinner. We arrived on time and were promptly seated. I mentioned in the reservation we were celebrating the occasion. They sat us out of way in a quieter area on the restaurant which we very much appreciated. The small plates were great, the calamari exceptional and the rib eye was fantastic prepared over the wood fired grill. Service was very attentive. A perfect spot for a special occasion!
My only negative comment is that it is very noisy if one doesn't request a booth. Other than that, we will go back many more times! It is like being back in Spain again.
We love this place. Our server Shaun did an outstanding job!!!
Very nice celebration dinner for our anniversary at La Cuchara. The first course of cheese, charcuterie, and the pan con tomate was sublime. Main courses were good but not great. Pasta with chanterelles was delicious but a bit tired after a few bites. The lamb shoulder meat itself was excellent but the dragon beans and accompaniments left something to be desired. Service was excellent. Overall, very nice experience and would come back.
A local fav, we go there once a month. Great place for business or casual dinner with friends. Love the big bar (25 seats?) and friendly bartenders.
