We sat at our seat for at least 15 minutes before anyone came to our table. And that was only after I saved down the hostess. Took forever to get a menu water or someone to open our bottle of wine. Good was mediocre at best. Salad was just greens with maybe a small piece of walnut. My soul was served barely warm. Entree was ok but nothing special. Had to ask for bread. No butter or spread. Waiter never even asked if we wanted coffee or dessert. Very disappointed and was over priced.
2nd time here did not disappoint. Excellent food and service. This was a mid week meet up with friends so the restaurant was very quiet. We were greeted promptly and courteously service was good but not overbearing. We had daily specials for appetizer and main course which were prepared perfectly. Although a little pricey for a local BYOB definitely worth it. Will definitely be back.
Our reservation was 7:15 pm. Service was unbearably slow. Tables were crowded into a small space allowing another patron to crash into my back while I was seated . The excessive noise level made conversation difficult. We waited over an hour for our dinner to be served.
Haven't been to La Cippolina for years and glad I returned. Food and service were excellent. A couple of things to note:
Service was outstanding for 3/4 of the meal, however fell off a bit as the restaurant filled up. We opened an additional bottle of wine ourselves, and my cappuccino was forgotten.
Portions are somewhat small, however there is plenty of bread, roasted garlic, wonderful pesto for dipping and a marvelous chick pea salad prior that for most of us, the size of the meal wasn't an issue.
Looking forward to returning and trying the prix fixe menu.
My wife and I most recently dined here Saturday, 1/6/18. We have been loyal customers of this restaurant for many years. The menu designed by Matt has always been superb and the service and willingness to accommodate customers is excellent. At each visit we are greeted by the classy and sophisticated Adele. She is extremely proud of her talented and handsome grandson Matt and does everything within her power to enhance the dining experience of every person who enters the doors of La Cipollina. She is a wonderful asset to this restaurant. We look forward to enjoying Matt's next Zagat rated culinary creation!
I was not aware that it was a pre fix menu when I made
The reservation. Had I had known I would not have gone.
My husband doesn't eat salad and neither of us drink
wine. We didn't order the salad course for one and understood that we would still be charged the full $75. Ok fine but did they really have to charge us for 4 fountain drinks. Which didn't come out correctly. Hostess was friendly but seemed overwhelmed with the coats.
This was our first time at La Cippolina and went since it was a special occasion....New Year's Eve. Their menu prices have always been quite pricey and was disappointed when we were seated and handed a $75 pp pri fixed menu. I had purposely looked at their website before booking to see if thete was a soecial menu for that night and no where was it noted.
This was our first time here for a Christmas Eve dinner. The food, service, and atmosphere
was absolutely TOP NOTCH!!
HOWEVER, the hostess was horrible, rude, and nasty. My sister did not want to hang up
her ultra expensive fur due to the fact it was right next to the front door very accessible
to anyone walking in. When my sister asked the hostess if the coats would be attended
to throughout the evening, she very nastily replied, WELL I'M RIGHT HERE !!
Moving on, we had a reservation and so I gave her the name of our party. She left us all standing there for at least 10 minutes without a word while she escorted other people to different tables (people that came in AFTER us). I finally had to ask about our table, where
she then walked into the entrance of the dining room pointing, turned to me and said, 'your table is there'. She then promptly turned around and returned to the front entrance.
When our server arrived with our food, she was trying to squeeze behind him and another
table with people following her to their table (at least they got shown to their table). She
then BARKED at my server that she was trying to ' GET THROUGH HERE ' while he politely
answered her stating that he was serving our food. I commented on how rude she was
since our arrival, and he let us know she is always this way, and the Owner's grandmother.
Lastly, we did meet the Owner's wife, family and little girls who sat right behind us. She
was super friendly, and wished us all a Happy Holiday !!
As good as this place was, unfortunately I would not return or recommend it due to the
unprofessional, unaccommodating NASTY GRANNY situation. You may want to think about
hiring a smiling, friendly hostess who actually knows how to treat customers !!!
Loved La Cipollina from the moment we walked in. Staff (Nick and Stephan) was friendly, attentive and helpful; ambience was perfect for a dinner-time escape from a hectic holiday season. Plenty of vegetarian options to choose from. We started with a cheese board--delicious selections and a variety of tasty accoutrements, but probably should have ended the meal with it instead as it was very filling. The mushroom risotto was perhaps the best I've had--thick pieces of a variety of wild mushrooms, the rice done to creamy goodness. The rigatoni putanesca was also exceptional. The long hots should have come with a warning label--hot to the point of pain--but would order them again in a heartbeat. Despite very generous entrée portions, we decided to cram in dessert. The assorted sorbets were fantastic, but the simple fresh berries with homemade whipped cream were the hit. Add to this the holiday lights display of downtown Freehold on a cold Saturday night, and it could not have been better!
I’ve been a few times prior and this trip was a let down. Other than the young man making the bananas foster we had no real attentive wait staff and the food was decent at best. We were asked the same questions over and over, given the wrong check twice, given the wrong result card back, and then just ignored until we asked for ours. Everyplace is entitled to an off night but the fact that they didn’t even offer dessert on the house or something of that nature was a bit upsetting since I spent $200 on a sub par meal with admittedly sub par service.
Good: food; friendly hostess; decor and ambiance
Bad: service: our first waitress had never opened a bottle of wine before and asked for our help. We never heard from her again. A second waiter came out 20 minutes later and told us the specials, yet we didn't have any menus. After getting our menus 10 minutes later, we ordered. The food came out quickly, delivered by a random cook, and was delicious. A third waiter came out to check on us and eventually got us our check. The check was picked up by a FOURTH WAITRESS, but came back and explained something about them not having the right amount on the check despite running it. I was never given a receipt to keep or sign, and at this point, we just left. Very confused.
The restaurant called in advance to say they had mistakenly overbooked and asked to move our reservation back an hour. We were flexible and it worked out great as we had private dinner on their outdoor grotto on a beautiful summer evening. Our servers and hostess were lovely and accommodating; the food was really very good as usual. We have been here many times, but not recently...too bad for us, we remember now what a really nice place this is...our experience may not be quite as great next time considering the circumstances but La Cipollina is a consistently lovely local restaurant.
We expected more of the restaurant based on the reviews. The service, while they tried, was a bit awkward and uneven, as well as lacking in true warmth. The food was good especially the Pasta special, but the Shrimp was overcooked. Pricing was reasonable due to the fact that it is a BYOB establishment. The ambience was the high point of the meal, it is a shame that this fact was the highpoint as the potential is there.
Our go-to restaurant whenever we have a sitter, the fresh mozzarella is AMAZING!! Served warm, you can tell immediately just how fresh it is! We always order the cheese plate, which comes with olives and fruits, and the pasta, another staple, is obviously homemade. We haven't had the seafood yet, but we're very excited to try it!!
We had a wonderful time and meal at the restaurant. The staff could not have been more accommodating. This was our first time dining here and with 4 couples we could not have been more pleased. We had a lot of catching up to do and our meal was never rushed. A most pleasant dining experience.
This place is usually amazing. This was our worst experience at a restaurant ever and we go out to nice restaurants very often. The service was terrible and the place was empty so there was no excuse. 20 minutes after we were all served our meals my sons meal finally came and was literally spilled all over his lap. It was a nightmare. It was so bad our entire meal was free per the owner. Sadly we won't go back .
LaCipollina's is a hidden neighborhood gem in Freehold. The food is delicious, ample and cooked to perfection. They have outdoor dining when the weather is nice and it was nice the night we went. They even have music many Friday nights. Its BYOB which keeps the tab down and lets you concentrate on the matter at hand, having a delicious meal in a wonderful setting surrounded by caring and attentive servers, a recipe for success anywhere.
While Mother's Day is always a challenge to go to a resteraunt on, I wasn't expecting our local neighborhood restaurant to be so frazzled. We arrived at our time, not too long of a wait, but once seated it took quite a while for some to acknowledge us and give us menus. Some of the specials were no longer available, while it was on,y 6:00 pm. We were also told the chef would not change any item on the menu, the menu was what it was. Ok with that said we ordered, scallop with risotto which the scallop came out raw , returned it and it came back the same way. The Osso bocco, one of our usual favorites was a bit bland and not up to its usual standard. I had shrimp risotto nothing great. And we also had a carbonara dish which was lacking in flavor, another of our usual favorites. We ordered coffee and dessert and the cappuccino cam out cold. I guess it was too busy for them to handle which was reflected on the staff and the food. Very sad about it as it will be quite awhile before we frequent this resteraunt again. I don't like to give bad reviews but with so many disappointments I felt they should know.
Always good, so when saw cippolina listed for nj restaurant week at $32 3 courses made reservations. Bring your own wine..
Menu was one of the better for that week.
Had caprese salad, lobster pasta mac& cheese, fantastic tender thick pork chops,
Salmon on mushroom rissoto was excellent dessert with an assortment of cookies also fresh and delicious others at table had espresso mousse cake which was very good and ricotta cheesecake I would never hesitate to go to cipolina food is very well-prepared services very good and during the summer weekends outdoor dining with live music generally a guitarist
