Consistently wonderful. Never disappoints. ❤️
Though we hadn't been in a couple of years, it was nice to see great things remained great at Chaumiere. The service, food and ambiance were as special as we remembered, and the neither the owners nor the servers failed to take note of our reservation for our anniversary, providing congratulations and more. We were very pleased to have revisited this special place.
Lovely good food, ambience felt old school French. Wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food was delicious.
Our go to French restaurant when we visit DC, authentic outstanding menu, delicious food and great service.
We continue to be thrilled by the quality of the French cuisine offered here. Dishes that are half-heartedly executed elsewhere, with precooked ingredients, are cooked here a la minute with authentic flavors. This night our dishes were perfect sweetbreads in madeira sauce and tripes a la mode da Caen as appetizers, followed by lovely veal scallops in Calvados cream and a special of utterly succulent quail nested on lentils de Puy. Flavors are layered and everything is perfectly seasoned. Expert, professional service from staff who know their stuff. A well chosen wine list with offerings at several price points. There a just so many dishes on the regular menu -- not to mention weekly and daily specials -- that will keep us coming back over and over to taste them all.
Always great food and service. Have never had a negative experience.
As has been the case for years, the food, service, and ambiance were outstanding. Every time we are in DC, we go back. The riz de veau are the best in the City.
Thier liver is the best in town. My wife loves liver and has tried at many of our best DC bistros. She says, "to die for."
Awesome food but the seated us at a table for two jn a corner. The table was really small. Other than the table the food and service was outstanding.
This was an amazing restaurant. The food was outstanding, as good or better, than many places we have been in France. The waiter was knowledgeable about the preparation of each dish and was fun to talk to. I would highly recommend this restaurant and the prices were very reasonable. Try the salmon en croute. It was amazing!
Celebrated our anniversary here with our teen kids while visiting DC from New York. Loved everything about the restaurant. The ambiance was cozy French country setting. Food was all delicious. Service was great; the waiter put a little candle on our shared desert and wished us happy anniversary - a very thoughtful touch. Would recommend this restaurant.
Classic French fare and amazing service. Most underrated restaurant in Georgetown.
A bit pricey, especially for the appetizers. Overall, wonderful food and ambience.
Always superb, never disappoints. We’ve been going here for decades, so wonderful it is still here!
If you're looking for a classic French bistro with traditional food, you can't beat La Chaumiere. We rank it as the #1 best place to go in Washington. Sweetbreads, brains in butter with capers, fabulous pike quenelles, and, of course, the souffles!
Delicious cucumber soup for a warm evening, robust cassoulet, saumon en croute reminiscent of coulibiac and a wonderful chocolate soufflé to finish
Excellent venue for everyday dining. A bit noisy this past Saturday, but food was excellent.
Great flavors, menu & staff & wine list/knowledge!
In a world of trendy restaurants, I love finding a restaurant with classic cuisine, but this was fair at best. Really disappointing.
My wife and I were insulted by the maitre d' / owner in loud and abrasive tones. He and his staff had clearly overbooked (it was Bastille Day, and it is a French restaurant, but that is no excuse). We had a reservation, arrived on time, but were told it would be at least a half-hour before seating. The maitre d' / owner then said he would not seat us at all, and we walked out. Another couple was told that their reservation could not be honored, and they walked out. To try making a bit more money, the restaurant squeezes reservations together, and thus risks losing customers. We have been there at least a dozen times (the prior ownership was far better - courteous and helpful, as is one's right, given that they are in business and we are paying.) Never again. Tell people who are thinking of this restaurant that a reservation is no guarantee of a table.
We were seated upstairs. The waiter would disappear for extended periods of time. We waited for our drink orders and had an exceedingly long wait for our main course. During these long waits, the waiter was no where to be seen, and seemed irritated having to climb the stairs to the second floor. Although it was quieter upstairs, it lacked the charm and ambience of the main floor dining areas. Fortunately, the food was quite good, making up for having to wait but not completely making up for the lack of professional, friendly service.
In celebration of Bastille Day, La Chaumiere provided a very authentic and traditional french meal. The service was prompt and courteous. We selected Soup L'onion, with veal and lamb dishes to follow. Everything was cooked and prepared to perfection. We saved room for great desserts of creme brûlée and profiteroles. If you are looking for predictable French food served in a great ambiance, La Chaumiere will provide a lovely experience.
My second time here and I really liked it again. I got the Waugh Flap Sirloin and my girlfriend got the salmon. Server did a very good job and gave us both excellent wine suggestions to pair with our food. I look forward to coming back again.
The rustic charms of La Chaumiere never fail to impress. I had four courses - salad, entrée, plat principal and dessert. Each was perfectly presented, correctly portioned and delicious. The Foie Gras was a particular treat, as was the Soufflé au Chocolat.
The service was a bit disordered, as we had several (very experienced) waiters calling on us, so there was some duplication of inquiries. But overall, very nice without being too intrusive. There was a dustup at the table next to ours when an older gentleman stepped out to take a phone call leaving his younger date to sit alone for at least 25 minutes. When he returned, she was furious! She made quite a scene. Still, it was better than sitting next to some jerk on his cell phone, so I could only feel bad for this young woman.
Years ago, when I first visited, I was refused service by Mr. Martin Lumet himself, because I was wearing shorts. This time, I noticed many others wearing shorts (it was 95F, so it's understandable). It was also a Tuesday, which apparently is a slow night and Mr. Lumet wasn't anywhere in sight. Or maybe the standards have slipped?
I visit DC with some frequency, and I will be back!
Wonderful place!! great food and service!! best in DC
Always delicious food at this French Restaurant. We shared the lamb chops & Special
For that day Wagyu Steak...and each had the Caesars Salad...Highly recommend this
Excellent food, great service, wonderful ambiance.
Impeccable food, service and ambience, as always. Our favorite in DC.
Classic French cuisine beautifully prepared. Delightful but not overpowering depth of flavor. Excellent service. Great wine selection. Cozy place, great for couples too. All staff were gracious and welcoming.
Definitely recommend ordering the chocolate souffle ahead of time for dessert.
We have dined at La Chaumiere many times in the past 15 years. It does not get better than this for those who enjoy country French cuisine. The restaurant has an expansive wine list with plenty of offerings in all price ranges including sufficient wines in the $40 range.
This was such an incredible culinary experience, from start to finish. My husband took me for my birthday and although it was very expensive, we both thought it was worth every penny for a special occasion meal. We both ordered the filet beef medallions and then split a piece of the flourless chocolate cake with hazelnut sauce. It was the best meal I've had probably in years! We will definitely be back.
Was very good! True French food and offerings. Nice wine list of French wine. They do souffles for dessert if you are so inclined. Dover Sole was as expected, excellent. Everything was very tasty and temperature correct when arriving at table. Nice little private area/room in front if you have a larger party you wish to accommodate and dine alone.
Highly recommended. Incredible service and food. Absolutely perfect.
This dinner was a business dinner. Upon entering I was greeted and escorted to the table. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. The waiter discussed the menu with us and explained details with us. Upon learning of one colleague's preferences the chef offered a Crab dinner salad which was not on the menu. It was delicious. A cold Summer soup was also very good. This was very considerate. I am a huge fan of Escargot. Their version of Escargots Au Buerre D'Ail arrived a deep black color with 6 tiny morsels of Escargot. They were not much bigger than the eraser on an end of a pencil. It was not my preference for the preparation. The Trout Almondine was excellent. The service was excellent. I look forward to another meal.
Authentic old school French restaurant. Could have been dining in the French countryside. Warm and true.
This restaurant is very cozy and comfortable. The food was delicious. Service was attentive but not overbearing. If I lived in DC I would eat there often.
Excellent French food, well prepared, and in a real French ambiance. Certainly not cheap, but given the quality of the food, a good value indeed. Special tip: the Dover Sole is outstanding!
The food is authentic French and beautifully plated as well as fully delicious.
Our waiter was extraordinary - personable, attentive, efficient, altogether excellent.
And he knew a (deceased) friend of ours from Univ. of Michigan - which added a little
extra. The food, as always, was delicious and beautifully presented.
