It’s always a great feeling that when you return to an all time favorite after many years and it’s still as superb. The food we ordered were so delicious. I had the shrimps, scallops and lobster dish. My daughter had the lamb entree. The herb crust on the lamb was outstanding. DON’T forget to order the Grand Marnier or the Chocolate soufflé. Both were out of this world! Our waitstaff was such a gentleman and took care of us well. The manager on-site was always roaming to check to make sure things are going well.
Food was good, but service was quite poor -- particularly for such a nice restaurant. We couldn't get anyone's attention for the first 20 to 30 minutes and then at the end, we couldn't get anyone to bring us a bill.
When we complained, the manager became very defensive instead of genuinely listening to our concerns.
This is the first time I've ever written a poor review of a restaurant and I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be La Chaumiere. We will not be returning,
This is a very old, established French restaurant with traditional French-style offerings of salads, meats, poultry, fish and desserts. The food is consistently very good. The service was excellent on the Friday night we were there. Reservations are important. As with most every place in Georgetown, parking is an issue, although the restaurant has a parking agreement with the hotel across M Street and it validates to reduce the price. We were quite pleased with the food, service and wine selection. Two of us had lamb chops, one a steak au poivre and one a brandade. It is not inexpensive, with main courses in the $35-$40 range. Our dinner for four, including appetizer or salad, main course, dessert and wine was $378.00, not including gratuity. For this level of food and service, we did not find it expensive for DC. The service was unobtrusive, experienced and well-paced. We were able to chat and did not feel rushed.
The food is outstanding and the service is excellent. The waiter was most attentive to our needs. The soufle for desert was so so. The chocolate or grand marnier flavor was too subtle for our tastes.
We have been going to La Chaumiere since the late 1980's and is still our favorite restaurant! We love going just for dinner or a special occasion. Martin and Mariel are wonderful and always great us with a big smile!
We can't wait for our next visit!
A good, unpretentious, traditional French restaurant--good, reliable and imaginative cuisine; friendly professional service and comfortable quiet atmosphere.
David in front & Marcello serving were wonderrful!
Several of our orders were wrong, long wait times for our main meal and to order wine. Our anniversary was really upsetting based on our experience. We will never be returning here.
This restaurant is a go-to for my family. Always uses high quality ingredients. I was surprised and disappointed by the temperature of my entree tonight though—not even lukewarm. But the flavors were very good. I’ve been here several times and never had this happen before, so perhaps just a fluke. I did enjoy the warm berries with caramel for dessert.
The food was excellent. Everyone had a different entree and everyone liked their choice. The tables are crowded; thus the noise was increased. The service was competent and efficient.
The best trout almandine, followed by the scrumptious pre-ordered apple tart for dessert, is my idea of the perfect meal.
I was more than pleased with selecting La Chaumiere to celebrate my first wedding anniversary. Our waiter, Henri, helped make our dining experience even more memorable!
The food was absolutely delicious!
We spent a week in Washington and experienced several nice restaurants. La Chaumiere was our favorite, as it featured great food and exceptional service. Our entrees featured sea scallops and lobster, and we heard others at tables around us rave about several other offerings. We look forward to returning to this restaurant on our next visit to DC.
The waiter was superbe! I must give him due credit.
Everyones’ meals were very good. The duck, salmon en croute, steak and trout were very good.
The cassoulet (in my opinion) has been Americanized. When living in France the sauce was more of a brown sauce wherever it was ordered. This sauce was orange with a tomato flavor. The morsels of lamb, saucisson, the duck confit and the white beans were cooked beautifully.
The desserts of various sorbet were delicious. Both soufflés were heavenly.
I look forward to my next dinner.
Very nice French food. Always a great night with good wine a very good service
This restaurant has been excellent in service, food and atmosphere for decades!
Went to La Chaumerie to celebrate the arrival from a family member from overseas. My wife and I like this restaurant so much we always bring friends and family there. The food is excellent the service consistently good and the restaurant has a typical french atmosphere. Can warmly recommend the Onion Soup and the best Escargots in town! The Roast Lamb , Duck, Venison and Sole Meuniere are specially excellent and so is their panfried Calfsliver.Their Soufflees Tarte Tatin and Profiterolles are out of this world! The owner is there all the time and greets his guests at the entrance.Ask for Harry as a server:Great guy! This restaurant is highly recommended.
Food was just average.
Another great meal at La Chaumiere. As always, Rene you are the best!
Never a bad meal at La Chaumiere. Rene, thank you for the excellent service!
Very nice place. Waiter very courteous. Menu very interesting and varied. Took far too long to serve dinner with no explanation. Patrons seated after us were served their dinner before us and finished their dinner well before we were served. Waiter said just another minute when serving them probably expecting us to complain. We didn't and there was no apology or explanation when we were finally served. The food was delicious and we enjoyed it. The appetizer was fantastic as was dessert and the course in between (the entree)
Fabulous as always! We've been coming here for many years and have never been disappointed. The food is terrific and so authentic French.
Service was very good. Food delicious. We had early res before a show at Kennedy center. They got us in and out in a timely manner. Highly recommend the sausage appetizer and the Chaumiere after dinner coffee.
It is refreshing these days to find a good restaurant where you can have a conversation without screaming at each other above the din. Excellent traditional French cuisine.
Excellent meal. Delicious! I very much appreciated the attentive service.
I strongly recommend the Dover Sole, which is probably the best one on the continent. Great cuisine, I'm going there regularly with my wife since 20 years.
We have been a number of times. If you are a fan of Julia Childs style of French food this is a place you will like. The added benefit is the Lyonnaise dishes not served to many places especially the Quenelles with lobster sauce
Excellent restaurant, authentic French cuisine and perfect location in Washington, DC. I had Medallions of Beef and it was delicious. My wife had the magret de canard, superb too. Our waiter was French and very nice. I highly recommend this restaurant
Loved this restaurant, the food, setting and service were all absolutely fantastic. What a great find.
Also, make it easy on yourself and park across the street at the Four Seasons Hotel valet parking. Give them your parking voucher when ready to pay the bill and they'll just add the parking charge directly onto your restaurant bill as well.
Very good food but the service was very long for everything. The manager was not really paying attention to the overall dinner experience we could expect for this price range!
We had a lovely gastronomic experience at La Chaumiere in Georgetown. The main dining room looked like a French country kitchen, very charming and lively with diners some speaking French. The menu is very traditional which was delightful. We had foie gras, quenelle, entrecote, and a gallette dessert that were all delicious, and paired excellently with a grand cru classe Bordeaux. The service was attentive despite the Saturday evening crowd. Wonderful time and will return.
Excellent all around!XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Whenever we are in DC, we have a family dinner here. It is a ritual that we will never stop sharing. Thank you for another fantastic meal before our daughter left for college.
We dine here frequently, ordering steak au poivre, our favorite entree. However, we were disappointed this time. Our steaks (medium and medium rare) were tough. The black peppercorns mixed with green peppercorns (a recipe change) were hard with an overwhelming flavor. And the meat and sauce were almost cold. The chairs were painfully uncomfortable, as they always are, and the backs were sticky. And, awful for a restaurant with restrooms near diners, the Ladies Room toilet would not flush! Our server—and dessert—saved the evening! We were celebrating our 27th Wedding Anniversary.
Love this Restaurant but would be even more enthusiastic if I could get them to share their recipe for their apple tart, which is THE BEST!
Enjoyed our time, quiet, interesting menu .choices
My daughter and I truly enjoyed our dining experience. It felt like an authentic French experience. The food was delightful. My daughter who lives in France felt inspired to speak in French to our waiter, Phillipe. He was great as well. We will definitely dine at La Chaumiere again.
Excellent restaurant with superb food and service . Truly a gem .
Much louder than what I expected. We were given a table near the waiters point of entry stand so no privacy at all. Always someone coming and going. The resturat week deal was no deal at all with a much reduced menu and an upcharge for half the items. While Open Table said parking at Four Seasons hotel was $10, I was chaged $14 at the restaurant which added a very bad aftertaste in my mouth. Fool me once, I am not going back again.
Awesome dinner. The Steak Au Poivre was excellent. Haven’t had a bad meal at this wonderful spot. A must go to if you are in Georgetown.
