Martin was very super nice
The service outstanding
The food very well prepared
Calf liver cooked to perfection
And my rack of lamb was succulent
Chef Patrick you are one of the best French chef in DC
This was our 2nd visit and La Chaumiere does not disappoint! We were celebrating our daughter's quarter century birthday (!) and everything was perfect! The food was splendid and sitting by the fire so very special! Merci infiniment Mariel! A la prochaine fois!
We were traveling to Georgetown and La Chaumiere was recommended by a friend of mine. The food was excellent - Trout Almadine was outstanding as was the Duck. A friend who had the Calves Liver said it was the best she had had. Wait staff is very professional - takes good care of you. The only non positive thing is the tables are extremely close but we had nice tables mates around us so it was not an issue. It has a very European flair. Would high rec if you wanted excellent French food!!
A Georgetown standby for decades, very cozy. Classic French cuisine, a little heavy in the old style, but well-executed. Wine list has a good selection, but no real bargains. The two of us had a very pleasant evening. Will go back.
Classic French food. Especially enjoyed the rack of veal. The tables are very close so difficult to talk quietly, but locals love the atmosphere in Georgetown. They could use an update on the old photos on the wall from 30 years ago.
We met a longtime friend visiting from Minneapolis, who likes La Chaumiere a lot. For my wife and me, it was our first time. We shared two baked mussels appetizers. My wife and her friend ordered the duck confit, I ordered the fish stew. Everything was prepared perfectly and delicious. Our excellent waiter, though he was from Bordeaux, recommended a reasonably priced white Burgundy, which paired perfectly with our food. The fish stew was rather different from bouillabaisse but still wonderful. I only wish I'd saved more of that crusty bread to wipe up the last few drops. For dessert we had one order of profiteroles, one chocolate soufflé, the best soufflé I ever ate. The ambience was agreeable, there was no annoying background music, and we had little trouble hearing each other. We will be back.
An old favorite, still living up to happy souvenirs.
Comfortable atmosphere, relaxing actually. Not a trendy place but a classy, casual ambiance. Top notch service. Food is very good and reasonably priced. the French onion soup was excellent. The scallops were sliced thru the middle horizontally, were about 1/2 inch thick. I actually prefer them that way. The other two got filets and said they were very good, their plates were clean. I could eat here several times a month. It's not a ritzy, big dollar place, and I think that's a good thing.
This place is just an amazing under rated gem in DC. If you think places on 14th Street are the places to eat in DC, you've got it all wrong. Just outstanding all around!
Excellent food, nice authentic French ambiance, great service and staff.
Our favorite place in the entire DC area for good food and conversation.
Went to try this restaurant for the first time just to hang out with my good friend. We enjoyed the food very much. We for dinner on Saturday night. I had the trout and he had the NY Steak for our main course and lobster bisque and oysters on the half shelf as appetizers. The lobster bisque was ok, I wasn’t really into it but my friend enjoyed every bit of it. When our main dishes came, we were wowed by the amount of taste in every bite of out dishes. He let me try his steak and it was so succulent, I tell you it set the bar really high on steak that anything after it will have to be equally great. The trout was amazing! It had almonds on it and I wish I had asked to have them on the side. I enjoyed every bite of my trout and can’t wait to go back and have it one more time. We also shared a creme brûlée and it was so creamy and sweet I want more now! The ambiance felt a bit crowded and people were being sat so close to us we felt we could not hold a conversation. I wish that could change but I do understand that being Saturday they might have been booked! The waiter was amazing, the place even though it was full at capacity, they do not rush u. I loved the experience and can’t wait until I go back!
We spent the weekend at a hotel nearby because of power outages from the recent storm, and happened to find La Chaumiere on one of the "Best" lists for DC restaurants. Saturday evening, the restaurant was extremely full, and we noticed right away that the hosts knew many of their patrons personally. This is always a good sign! Though the main room was full we were tucked away in a corner and were very happy with our assigned table. The wait staff were clearly seasoned professionals, who never pushed along the timing of service. The lobster bisque was very much what we have tasted in the south of France: not thick and creamy, as much as so intensely flavorful that each mouthful was a taste explosion. The chef's pate was wonderfully fresh and rustic in style. I would only have appreciated a bit of whole grain mustard as an accompaniment. Entrees were the Dover Sole, perfectly prepared; tender, mild and not a single bone! The Fricassée du Pêcheur was also a wonderful dish with each element prepared with care to bring out the best in the seafood and the winter vegetable that accompanied. We finished with a wonder chocolate souffle that was "TDF". We will return again whenever we are in the DC area!
We had RSVP at 6pm. At 7:30pm, the manager came and told us he needed our table in 5 minutes. We believe that we were asked to leave because we were two Asian women, and therefore were a minority. I guess he thought we would acquiesce. Do not eat here if you are not of European-colonizing descent, because they'll just try to kick you out to make room for those who are Caucasian.Too bad!
We chose La Chaumiere to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday and she was not disappointed. My wife chose the salmon puff pastry...my daughter the braised short rib and I the venison. All said they would order again. I also had the chocolate souffle and it was very good. All in all we would happily return to try some of the other dishes.
The restaurant was very charming and the food was excellent. Very authentic. The staff was helpful.
This restaurant NEVER disappoints on food or service! It is ideal for so many occasions from making a business lunch meeting with colleagues more enjoyable with their food to a romantic dinner with my husband or a fun outing with friends.
The overall experience was lovely and quite outstanding. It’s definitely an excellent place to have a date, but more so with the person you have been with for a while and due to the intimate setting maybe not the first date. To start off, the food was great. Both the appetizers and the entree were amazing! My boyfriend and I were really blown away with the meals. The whole ambiance was nice and cozy and romantic. Our server was very kind and funny which definitely enhanced the experience and he even recommended us places to go afterwards since it was a Saturday night. It was packed so could be a little noisy at times but once it cleared out a bit it was quiet. Overall an amazing resteraunt. It was my first French resteraunt but I’ll definitely want to come back! Great place for a date with someone special (especially since its not cheap).
Food was superb, with a wide range of choices. Seating was a bit tight, but it was a Saturday night. Pretty busy place, the waiters really have to hustle. Ours was wonderful.
My favorite restaurant whenever I am in Washington. Not there often but my husband and I went for years without fail. Unfortunately, he has passed on so this time I took my two grandsons 12 and 13 and it was enjoyed by all 3 of us.
I've had a number of dinners at La Chaumiere and it has been consistently very good. This time was no exception. La Chaumiere has the feel of a 1960s Parisian restaurant, the food is well prepared and presented, and service is attentive without being overbearing. This is an excellent place to meet with friends or family. It is one of my favorites.
Great French Bistro! Food is terrific. And many typical French options.
Outstanding! Every single dish we ordered was simply amazing. We got escargot, stuffed oysters, salmon in puff pastry, roasted lamb, and of course the chocolate soufflé. We came hungry and left extremely happy. Our waiter also gave a good recommendation for wine to suit our taste.
we're long-time fans of this wonderful restaurant. return again and again. . !!!!
Awesome! Good food and service
Usual excellent food and service, warm and welcoming atmosphere. Still a gem.
I always like to come here when in town. The Dover sole however was just okay and had a lot of bones. $600 dinner tab made the experience feel overpriced.
I hate to admit this is only my 2nd time to visit La Chaumiere. We came 3 years ago to celebrate our anniversary. This place is absolutely amazing!! The service is always stellar and the food is out of this world. We had a nice cozy table by the fireplace, which was very romantic. Our daughter was in town so we decided to try ALL of her choices. We started with some fabulous foie gras and escargot. The BEST foie gras we've ever had. This alone would be worth coming in and having with a nice bottle of wine. The venison, was scrumptious, the lamb PERFECT, and the veal OUTSTANDING! We all sampled each others' dishes and were thrilled. At the end of our dinner, we shared the Grand Marnier Souffle which was truly dreamy. I should be reprimanded for waiting so long in between visits. This place IS A GEM.
Overall a good dining experience. The onion soup was somewhat bland. The waiter should let the customer know the prices of the specials. One entree was $40. Nice place.
Amazing as always. Even after 42 years in business they are still one of the best restaurants in town.
Fantastic, as always! Wonderful ambience and food.
Excellent restaurant, with classic French cuisine. Wine list a little high but wines are good.
I picked La Chaumiere for a romantic dinner, was really looking for great food and an old-Europe rustic feel. Found it at La Chaumiere, and along with a great waiter, we truly enjoyed our meal and experience. The restaurant was almost at capacity the entire Friday evening, but we never felt crowded or rushed, and always had attention of the staff without that feeling of hovering. It is not inexpensive, but we certainly got what we paid for.
Fully recommend La Chaumiere for romantic date night, or small groups of friends out for an elegant meal.
The food was underwhelming for the price. The mussels were under-done. The salmon was good but peppery which was not described in the menu as such.
This restaurant was delicious!
A great classic French restaurant with outstanding food, wine list, and service. I go there every time I am in DC. The quality of food and wine, the ambience, and the pleasant service have not changed in 10 years (and that is a good thing!).
Highly comfortable evening meal -- excellent service (including description of specials) amid large number of diners, like us, enjoying the meal.
La Chaumiere never fails to impress. The customer service is like family, the atmosphere is rustic French country, and the food is... well, amazing!
My friend and I had a very nice day-before-Valentine’s dinner. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the service was efficient and friendly. We’ll definitely go back again.
Came in from out of town and took my girlfriend on a date here. The maître d’ was, well, French. So no expectation of a warm reception, but not rude, either. We arrived during the height of the rush. The table was cozy and in an excellent location, though we had to wait a bit after our reservation time to be seated. The wait was worth it. Table setup was impeccable. Our waiter arrived promptly, the House Côte du Rhône was affordable but nice, and the food was superb. Despite the rush, wait staff was attentive, helpful, and extremely courteous. Overall, an enjoyable, warm dining experience, that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves a diverse French menu.
