La Chaumiere was highly recommended to me and unfortunately I was very disappointed! Our waiter was not helpful when we asked about the menu and for his recommendations and snapped at me as well. I had a $30 entree and was totally unimpressed. Go somewhere else!

This restaurant is such a gem. Authentic French cuisine, reasonable prices, wonderful wine list, attentive service. The atmosphere is charming and the charm of the maitre d and wait staff is wonderful. I had visitors from Europe who were very impressed.

I have dined at La Chaumiere for many years now and the quality has been consistently good. The wait staff is knowledgeable and thoughtful. When I spent into La Chaumiere I feel I am in a French country restaurant with wonderful comfort food, perfect for a winter night.

I would encourage anyone interested in classic French/Alsace cuisine to give this place a try.

I will be back!

Diners who arrived long after us were finished with their meals and left the restaurant before our dinners were served. I told the waiter to cancel our desserts (apple tart) because the wait was so long for our dinners. The manager came to our table and he was extremely rude and offered no apology and he insisted on arguing We were a party of 3 and his demeanor was embarrassing. He refused to cancel the dessert and did not offer coffee. I have been going there for many years for special occasions and the terrible service and the outrageous rudeness of the manager ruined what was to have been a special dinner.

Everything was great except the soup of the day. It was potato leek. It was $9 a cup and not only was it served luke warm, it did not resemble any potato leek soup that I have ever had. It appeared to be the broth from onion soup with green beans and mushy diced potatoes (canned). It was really a shame as it was the 1st thing tasted and set a bad tone. Fortunately, the snails, boudin blanc and lamb chops were all delicious. In hindsight, I should have insisted they remove the soup from the bill. The waiter never inquired as to why we did not eat the soup, just took the full cup away.

Food and service was amazing. My only very minor knock was with the place being small the fireplace makes it too warm inside restaurant. Even with that I would still recommend and definitely go back.

I was celebrating a birthday with a friend. We asked for a particular table and the request was honored. The staff welcomed me friend both remembering him and noting the special occasion.
Service was excellent, a special accommodation to a menu item made and we were not rushed.
A privately owned neighborhood treasure in a very busy city, D.C.

La Chaumiere is a favorite of some 40 years' standing. The couscous on Wednesdays is a particular favorite. It's casual, but not too casual, please; dress nicely but coat and tie are not required. The service is very good and the waiters understand how to treat a good bottle of wine, including how to appropriately top up a glass when needed. The fireplace in the center of the room is a special treat. Recommended!

We had just been to Paris and had enjoyed a great deal of delicious food there, and so for a special occasion we decided to try La Chaumiere for fun. The menu was extensive and nicely seasonal. We enjoyed the escargot and some salad, and our mains (duck and sole) were simply fantastic. We ended with the chocolate souffle, also very good. The wine list is impressive and varied with many French selections. Highly recommended.

Another terrific evening marking a friend's birthday at La Chaumiere. She raved about the escargot and the mussels, and I again adored they trout almondine. The gentleman both gave high marks to their beef tenderloin medallions. The tables are very close, but cheery service and charming setting make it tolerable. And I recommend pre-ordering the yummy apple tart drizzled with caramel!

Went on a Friday night for my sister's birthday. Food was absolutely incredible and our service was fantastic. The waiter had great recommendations and did not bat an eye when we needed "several" more minutes to decide. It was cold outside and there is an open fireplace in the middle of the restaurant, so it felt cozy but not cramped.

This is a nice place where you should dress up a bit -- not a suit per se, but definitely not a t-shirt.

There been such great innovation in the last 50 years in French cuisine in America. ZIn all this noise La Chaumiere has maintained as the only true classic French restaurant in Washington DC. The sauces, the dishes, the wine list( Wine Spectator awards since 1978) all are as well done as anywhere in the world. If you want to find out what sparked Julia Childs to inspire the very beginning of a food revolution that has transformed America and food you should go back to the basics. Every meal is a marvelous experience!

The food was excellent. The hostess asked about our plans for the evening and then assured us that we would make our show time which we did vey comfortably. The wait staff was attentive without being obtrusive. My only "complaint" was that we arrived a few minutes early and were not admitted even though there was a light rain. Being allowed to enter would have been appreciated.

A gem in Georgetown. I passed La Chaumiere many times. Saturday evening I made the call and was treated to a truly splendid meal. I started with pumpkin soup that was seasoned to perfection and just the right temperature and texture. My date had the escargot. I also had a green salad that was splendidly dressed, crisp and fresh. My entrée was venison medallions served with whipped white and sweet potatoes. The venison was sensational and cooked in a wine sauce that brought out the true taste of the meal. My date enjoyed the snapper, cooked to perfection. I wanted a bottle of Claret wine but the waiter recommended an exquisite red wine that complimented the meal. Espresso and wishing I had saved room for dessert. There will be a next time in the immediate future to re-visit this top shelf restaurant.

Great french restaurant. Whenever we are in Georgetown we eat here. For appetizers we had the pike quenelle and baked oysters, both delicious. For entrees we enjoyed the lamb chops and the special of short ribs in cabernet sauce. The chocolate soufflé is definitely a great choice for dessert.
