Enjoyed our evening very much. Excellent escargot. Will return.
Always superb service, and very very good traditional French food. The restaurant has a wonderful open fire on a cold winter’s day. The ambiance is welcoming and diners feel at once at home.
Food was alright but flavors weren't too special or outstanding. Felt overpriced as well, but ambiance was cozy and service was nice and quick. Overall would not return back though.
Food left much to be desired. Unsure if we tried on a bad night, but would not return. Service was to be expected for this price range, and ambience was nice for a date night type evening.
Excellent evening of fine dining. Food and wine were superb. Service was excellent. It was a busy night so a bit noisy but we were able to talk. The trout and salmon were excellent as well as the mussels and escargot. Get location excellent venue. We will be back. Thank you.
Nice but rather expensive, we spent a good romantic evening with my husband. French quisine seemed a little bit bland to my husband.
Simply the BEST, most reliable restaurant in DC! Always my favorite !
We went for restaurant week and I was surprised at how few choices there were and with the number of dishes that required add ons. Hard to find something to order. We also are there Christmas Eve and the food was memorable. Friday it was run of the mill. I will not go there during restaurant week again.
We had a wonderful dinner at a cozy table. Our waiter, Ron, was fabulous. He recommended a bottle of white wine that my husband and I really liked, no small feat since our tastes are very different. The mussels in garlic and butter are always a treat. I had never tried their veal stew before but it was subtle and wonderfully flavored. The poached pear with ice cream topped off a delicious meal. La Chaumiere is still delivering as a Georgetown favorite.
Tried this wonderful place for Restaurant Week on Friday night and it was crowded and noisy on the main floor so we were seated upstairs. Much more quiet but also less ambience. I'll try it again so I can sit near the fireplace maybe and enjoy the French decor that gives the place character. The food was outstanding and I enjoyed the caesar salad, fish and profiteroles. My friend enjoyed the French onion soup, which appears to be one of their specialties. If you want a trip to France without the plane ride, give this place a try.
Wonderful food and experience!
We tried the Restaurant week menu and found it reasonable. But the price of house wine at $18 was preposterous!
Food was good.
We went to La Chaumiere for lunch during restaurant week. All in the party had been previously.
the food was excellent, it was, admittedly more crowded than on previous visits and we were given a 'smallish' table (it accommodated all in the party, but there was little wiggle room.
Three of us ordered from the special restaurant week menu, two ordered from the regular menu, the only difference was in portion size. All in all it was a very good experience.
We enjoyed a delicious late lunch. We were not rushed; the food was beautifully prepared and presented; and it brought back many good memories of meals in France.
We went to La Chaumiere for a Restaurant Week lunch. The portions were very small, even with an upcharge for the entree. The food had very little flavor or seasoning. The Restaurant Week food
choices we ordered werer also on the regular menu, so we wouldn't be tempted to go back and order from the regular menu. The restaurant is cozy, however, and the service was very good.
We continue to return to La Chaumiere because of its outstanding menu and wine list. In this case it was also restaurant week which certainly enhanced the quality to price ratio. A wonderful Marseilles soup followed by a Veau Marengo went superbly with a Moulin-a-Vent from Beaujolais. This was topped off with a Profiteroles dessert. The portions worked well and were supremely served by our wait staff. Just the right amount of time between courses to have a pleasurable meal ending with the end of the bottle. I don't know how one could have a better evening.
Great restaurant great food
This is a great restaurant. Always a great meal. Onion soup, trout almandine, and a soufflé is the ideal meal. Wonderful management and service. The tops.
We have been several times, including over NYE. Excellent escargot and highly recommend the signatures plates of the Oysters Chaumiere and the Quenelles from the Cuisine de Terroir.
This was our first time being seated upstairs. Unfortunately the upstairs room is completely lacking in atmosphere. I understand not everyone can fit into the charming downstairs room, but they should make more of an effort to make the upstairs attractive. It really detracts from the experience. Also the service up there might be lacking; the waiter brought my husband his pre-ordered souffle but did not offer dessert to anyone else at the table. By the time we were able to ask for dessert menus, order, and receive dessert, my husband had long since finished his souffle. Finally, while most of our food was very good, the vegetarian option was very bland. It seems it would have been easy to correct these problems (ugly upstairs room, single bland vegetarian option) given the price. If we had been seated downstairs and did not have a vegetarian in our party, I expect this would have been a much more positive review.
Although I made a reservation several weeks in advance, requested a table next to the fireplace to celebrate a birthday, and arrived when they opened, they gave us a table along the wall. Then 30 minutes later a couple was given a prime spot next to the fireplace. WHAT??? The food was OK and the waiter was unfriendly. Perhaps they thought the free chocolate moose with a candle would appease us. This restaurant use to be a great place. Too bad -- we won't return.
wonderful French bistro feel, with great food. Definitely get the chocolate soufflé!!
Very noisy. Even though we had a reservation, we were seated in very cramped quarters in the back of the restaurant. I never like having to dine with persons I didn’t come to the restaurant with, but when the tables are maybe three feet apart . . . . The food was good. I ordered the Dover sole which was good, but not as good as when I ordered the same entree in a visit to the restaurant a few months ago. The other three persons at the table really liked their entrees. Overall, a good meal, but this is not the place to go for a quiet dinner with friends.
The maitre d' showed us to two undesirable tables and then we sat at a third table that was available.
Food was excellent except for trout amandine. It should have been sent back to the kitchen since it was
barely warm but did not want to wait after both entrees arrived.
Second time celebrating NYE. Does not disappoint. Lovely menu
I was disappointed. We were put upstairs where there is very little by way of ambiance as it felt like overflow seating. The fish was dry and that was truly disappointing. The waiter was the only highlight.
Excellent food and fantastic service. Would go back in a heartbeat.
traditional authentic french restaurant. friendly helpful staff. most men i've seen wearing suits or jackets for dinner in a very long time. xlnt food choices and desserts, esp the chocolate souffle, ordered before dinner.
We hadn't been there for several years and came for a special occasion. It was a fine meal, the menu had all the things we remembered, the waiter was knowledgeable and professional. I had snails , tripe and profiteroles, which were great. The snails were less garlicky than I remembered, and I could had have a little more meat in the tripe bowl. It was a fine meal, however.
Getting there obvious out of the way - you're going to be very cozy with your neighbor. It's a close quarters kind of dining room. Now that we're all European and comfortable with this - moving on. Not cheap. Good. Shouldn't be. But also, not obnoxious. 30 bucks for duck, perfectly cooked, deep portion, rice perfect, etc. etc. No regrets. You could go to some goofy celebrity chef place across the street (ahem Michael Mina) and spend a goofy amount of money for, well, that. The soufflés were perfectly executed - both cheese and chocolate. The Salmon in puff, delicate, delicious and enough. Only disappointment was wine by glass. Both we had were marginal. Gin martini as starter was banging. Two mains, one starter, couple of cocktails, two glasses of wine, one dessert, all in for a buck forty, you're winning. I have to say, one more time, the duck was exactly what a french country house should serve. If you're tired of one duck nugget with a magical jazz jam of modern plating expressionism (for 50 bucks), go here. And have desert. And relax in the warmth of the room. Then go to 4 Seasons for a night cap. The bar is good.
Outstanding meal at La Chaumiere! We came in on Thursday night so I could order the special of the day- Cassoulet. It was sensational and the most authentic serving I’ve ever had outside of the south of France. It was perfect!
My husband had the Duck a l’orange and was thrilled with his dish too. Finishing off the evening was a Grand Mariner Soufflé. What a great night... thank you!
This is a wonderful classic. Walk in, sit, and when the waiter comes you know immediately you are in professional hands. All the food is fantastically well-prepared. We had mushroom soup of the day and lobster bisque and were already happy. My clams on half shell were very tasty, Caesar salads were not huge but high quality with light dressing. My lamb chops were the best I think I've ever had, with a very interesting crust. Chocolate mousse was perfect, as was my wife's berries dessert. Been here before, will certainly come again.
The atmosphere here with the fireplace in the center of the dining room is perfect for a romantic dinner in the winter, and the apple tart dessert is amazing! The food & service were both fantastic.
Excellent set of choices for dinner, very well prepared. Busy, busy night (Christmas Eve) but we felt totally welcome and were very well served.
Great service, delicious food
Aucun effort était fait pour fêter un anniversaire annoncé et très spécial . Aucune attention particulière n’a été donné à cette personne . Nous aurions mieux fait d‘aller ailleurs !
As always, Martin was the perfect host. The food was delicious as always as well as the service
Crazy crowded holiday night but the CB food never disappoints!
Peter is wonderful !
