About La Cantina Italian Chophouse

Patterned after a wine cellar with tucked away booths, this unique restaurant places diners to dine on traditional Italian steak and seafood dishes with a Northern Italian flair. House favorites include pasta staples like the tortellini tre formaggi-a three cheese filled pasta with fresh cherry tomato garlic basil sauce-and the lasagna al forno which combines pasta layers with meat filling, cream sauce and parmesan cheese. House specialities include manicotti with fresh tomato sauce, shrimp casaligna and spaghetti mare Monti. Steaks and chops are hand cut to order and include our famous "Cantina" Rib eye, 16 0unce T-bone and pork chops vesuvio. La Cantina is perfect for theatre dining and famous Chicago steaks. The wine bar is the perfect setting for a romantic date or private deal making. With nods from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast La Cantina has the largest wine cellar in the Midwest.

Great service - felt very welcome and like part of the family. Excellent dinners - salmon, risotto, grilled calamari. Cheesecake was just okay, but overall I nice dining experience.

Our waiter was excellent - service is just as important as food quality.

Thank you!

We had a lovely dinner before the theater. The restaurant has been around since 1955 and is still very enjoyable.

We flew into Chicago mid afternoon and this restaurant was within walking distance of the hotel. Being Valentine's Day, I made reservations weeks in advance. We arrived 15 min early and were seated immediately. We received a complimentary appetizer after we showed a business card for the concierge at the hotel. The service and food were quite good. I didn't score as 5 stars as my 'cannoli professional' husband mentioned he has had much better.

Very nice. Sat at the bar before dinner and were unexpectedly (enjoyably) joined by two friends. Restaurant was very good at easily and unquestionably finding us a table for 6 (we had a reservation for 4). Service was excellent at the bar and at the table. A great variety of food was ordered and everyone enjoyed what they had. Good food - Great service - Good time -- nothing more is important!

Seafood Ravioli was delicious and thanks to our waiter I got the Canniloni with white sauce on one and red sauce in the other. It was perfect. Will definitely return on my next trip back to Chicago!

A pre-Hamilton dinner. Staff was very attentive to our needs, food was excellent. We told the staff we needed to get to the theater, and they got everything out to us without making it appear rushed, or losing any quality. Can't wait to go back and have a nice leisurely meal!

This is a good basic Italian restaurant. They were accommodating for one person in our party that need a special diet - no garlic or onions in the dish. The lasagna was different from what we are used to - no ricotta and mozzarella is an add-on. My husband's assessment: good but not the best he's ever had. Risotto ala pollo was ok, but nothing particularly special for me. Entrees do come with a salad, so cost was very reasonable as were the glasses of wine.

I had an Open Table Dining Reward and the manager indicated that it could not be used there as they have a "swipe"system, no key input. I told him prior to being seated that I had the Dining Reward and he said it would be used at end of meal. When bill came I was told I could not use it.

Our reservation was for 8:00 but arrived 1/2 hour early. We were seated right away with no problems. The service was very good. Our server, Ken, asked if we were attending a show to expedite our meal if need be. He was very knowledgeable about the menu. We asked to see the wine list which is quite extensive. Could be daunting so he offered to have the wine manager come and help us select a wine. We were fine but appreciated the offer. I ordered the Veal Marsala. It was good and what I expected. My husband ordered the Eggplant Parmesan. It was very good. It was made with panko crumbs which gave it a much lighter crust. Very nice. Plates were picked up quickly. We were checked on frequently by our server as well as the manager of the evening. All very friendly folks. We would definitely return.

Excellent service. Great food. We had two Caesar salads. Caprese with excellent tomatoes and mozzarella. Huge high quality pasta dishes. My wife says portions are too big which is true. Could easily share. Waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely going back.

Decided on going here due to the reviews and proximity to the Theatre District. Atmosphere was very nice in the basement. Surrounded by old brick the space was quaint and elegant.

As for the food I can’t say it was anything special. I had their lasagna which was a specialty on their menu. It was bland with over cooked meat, noodles and lacking spices. If you’ve had Olive Garden you’ve had theirs.

My daughter had the Meat Ravioli. I tried it and again very bland. I knew everything I needed to know when she said she preferred her schools meat ravioli. Really Hun?

If you want to be close it’s fine but since your in the city please go elsewhere. There’s countless other Italian options that are 5 Star.

Everything about the ambiance and location and service was wonderful. It was the food that was problematic. We ordered gnocchi, advertised to come with sausage, mushrooms and asparagus. It was difficult to find a mushroom, and the asparagus was cut into tiny pieces from the "not-as-good" end of the spear. The pasta was OK. A seafood salad was lacking much seafood. In the past, it had a better variety of seafood, and a lot of it. This one had mainly shrimp, and very little calamari. Very disappointing. It's close to the theater where Hamilton is playing, but I'd much rather eat earlier and walk farther than return here.

The food was good but the atmosphere felt a little cramped. The walkway through the restaurant is narrow and the tables do not have a lot of space. I have no complaints the food itself though or the portions.

We were early for our reservation but they were able to seat us right away which was great. Our server looked like maybe he had too many other tables in his section. It was a long wait from seating to placing our order. He came by shortly after the meal was delivered and checked on us but we had to flag him down for anything after that.

We had tickets for an evening performance of Hamilton, wanted to be close to the theater and we were starving! The restaurant is part of the Italian Village with each restaurant having its own ambiance. For a chophouse, there are lots of salads, seafood and pasta options. We split the salmon and it was very good. They forgot to bring our salads which really doesn’t affect the review. The bread is less than average. Skip it. There is a nice wine list and our server was very knowledgeable about the different reds. This is an excellent pre-theater choice. There are far better restaurants in Chicago so if theater isn’t a consideration spend some time looking through Open Table.
