Perfect ambiance. This restaurant was our first date. Moved out of NYC and decided to eat here again after 25 years! Still a great place!

The food was very good but no ambiance at all. We sat at the quietest table we could get which was wedged between the entrance and the bar/cashier (still very noisy). Go someplace else if you are looking for a romantic French restaurant.

I enjoyed the trout; the sauce was tasty and the fish was cooked to perfection. My wife and I also had an excellent creme brulee'; the top was seared just right. The location near the Metropolitan Opera makes it an ideal place to eat before attending the opera.

Very good pre concert French restaurant. Waiters are attentive without being bothersome. Service was good for the pre concert crowd that we were. Several had fish - excellent saucing as you would expect. At dessert, cheese cake was meh according to my daughter but a couple of us had the bread pudding which was indeed to die for. It was finished with a bourbon sauce. Excellent!

Roasted salmon was drowned in a too sweet sauce. Service was disinterested at best. Desserts were good.

We had brunch with relatives from California and one of them is a very challenging restaurant guest. I had requested a "quiet" place because one person in our group was hard of hearing, The entire restaurant is the size of a small rail car. single line of tables on the right and single line of tables on the left. Had to go down a few steps from the street level which initially concerned me. Very cozy atmosphere. When we arrived about 15% of the restaurant was occupied, by the time we left it was full. Food was very very good, a bit expensive for the serving sizes but money was not an issue for the payers. Asked for "spicy" bloody mary's and one person had to add tabasco three times! Waitstaff not eager to please. Asked for 1 cup of coffee for one guest at least 3 times! We were casually dining and not in any hurry but 3 times for a cup of coffee? Unacceptable. Overall enjoyed meal just wish that there was more of a sense of urgency on the part of the waitstaff. The youngest waiter in the group could teach the more seasoned ones a few things about customer service.

Will not go back. We had a reservation for four people at 6:45 and were not seated until 7:15.... explained we had a 9:30 show at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Our first course did not arrive until after 8:15. We had to get the attention of another waiter to get our dessert which arrived around 8:50. I was given four wrong coats before receiving mine. What was planned to be a leisurely walk to jazz ended up a run and we arrived as they were closing the doors. It was not a good experience.

One of our four diners received the wrong dinner. When he told the waiter, the waiter said “we ran out of what you ordered.” The waiter never asked the person to select something else from the menu. The waiter just handed him a dinner and expected the person in our party of four to eat it. And he did not like the

As usual the food was very good. I had the country pate as an appetizer, which is always tasty and well presented with a small salad. My wife chose the leeks vinaigrette, which were well prepared with a beautifully flavored vinaigrette. My main course was calf liver, which was good (but slightly overcooked) with excellent side courses of potato and sauteed shredded vegetable. My wife had ordered monkfish, but was served cod. The cod was very good, but not monkfish. Because we had waited a quite long time for the course and we had tickets for the Philharmonic, we chose not to have the error corrected. However, this was the one difficulty with our evening. Something was amiss with the kitchen and our order was very much delayed in addition to being incorrect. This is something very different from our previous experiences. We strongly believe that this was a one-time problem within the kitchen and not representative of the usual excellent service and food.

We were there for brunch and the main course was very good. I had the mushroom omelette and my daughter had the salmon eggs Benedict. Both dishes were done well, nicely plated and served hot. The dessert, though was a disappointment. We ordered the creme brulee, which you would think that a French restaurant wold do well. Not so; it tasted like it had been sitting a while and was over-cooked - very heavy. The service was fine, but a bit distracted at times.

I had eaten here before for lunch, and preferred that. For dinner, the menu was more limited and only available as a prix fixe with all the courses. The food was saltier than I prefer.

Very flexible. We arrived late (but we called to let them know traffic was bad coming from Westchester). We did not have time for dessert, so they let us order out of the “menu”.
Good food (not fabulous, as the duck skin was not crip at all), and pleasant staff.

Best pre-Lincoln Conter restaurant by far. French bistro food very good. Service and ambience are great and everything works to get you to the theater on time. Small but not too noisy and pleasant atmosphere. Highly recommend.

While I generally enjoyed the food and ambiance I was not happy at the end of of the meal when both front doors of the restaurant were opened and the restaurant suddenly became an ice-box - obviously as a not -too-subtle way of telling us to leave.
I also had to retrieve my own coat from the coat-check. Restaurants should have enough respect for the patrons to inform them that the restaurant will be closing at a particular time.

This was the second time we ate here before going to the opera. We had a dinner reservation for 6pm and had just enough time to finish dessert and walk back to the opera at 8. Next time we’ll make a 5:30 reservation just so that we could enjoy a little more conversation over coffee. I’m not complaining... the service was great, the food delicious, and the prices very reasonable. We were a party of six and were comfortably seated.

One of our favorite places we wanted to share with sister and husband after the opera. At 6:30 it was fully booked, "No room for coats inside" the coat check woman said, and she was right. We were so tightly squeezed in my brother-in-law got bumped more than once by the waiter serving and clearing plates. The noise level was uncomfortable this time and of course we did not linger - they needed our table too! For us, we will return, as we are used cozy and noisy, but they (from wide-open Arizona) were unhappy. Food and wine were quite good as usual, especially the calves liver and the lamb stew.

Cooking is always great with interesting items on the menu. The Calf's Liver with pearl onions was very tasty. Decor is good. The only problem is that it is small and fills up quickly probably because of the food. Best to make a reservation a few days in advance. If you just walk in off the street it is likely you will be turned away.

My second time at this restaurant, staff is exceptional and food is very good and pre-fix menu is great. Best for pre-theatre or post-theatre dinner. Noise level is high when crowded and seats are very close to other diners so private conversation is not possible, nor is this good for intimate leisurely dining experience.

The name literally translate to, Wooden Box. And you're seated at cramped tables emblematic of its name.

Service was spotty with waitstaff constantly bumping into to one another, similar to what you'd see in an old Marx Brothers movie.

Food was okay. The kitchen needs to learn how to serve the mashed potatoes and the wild rice at least at room temperature. When my wife returned her ice-cold mashed potatoes, they were returned only somewhat warmer.

My roasted duck came out with limp instead of crispy skin. When I returned it, instead of cooking it properly, it was thrown under a broiler which dried out the meat.

I can't believe this place stays in business and apparently still "packs them in". It just shows you how NYC diners are so craving French bistro cuisine, they're will to put up with a second rate operation like this.
