Awesome pre-opera dinner. Only caveat: Place is TINY so would be difficult for some folks to dine there...

I started dinner with a crab cake over salad, and followed that with a wonderful dinner of trout in Meunière sauce. The food was exceptional as always. La Boite en Bois remains a true NYC gem.

One of our favorite places we wanted to share with sister and husband after the opera. At 6:30 it was fully booked, "No room for coats inside" the coat check woman said, and she was right. We were so tightly squeezed in my brother-in-law got bumped more than once by the waiter serving and clearing plates. The noise level was uncomfortable this time and of course we did not linger - they needed our table too! For us, we will return, as we are used cozy and noisy, but they (from wide-open Arizona) were unhappy. Food and wine were quite good as usual, especially the calves liver and the lamb stew.

They were flexible when we were late for a reservation and still managed to serve us very good food in a short time so we could still make it to a performance on time.

My second time at this restaurant, staff is exceptional and food is very good and pre-fix menu is great. Best for pre-theatre or post-theatre dinner. Noise level is high when crowded and seats are very close to other diners so private conversation is not possible, nor is this good for intimate leisurely dining experience.

The name literally translate to, Wooden Box. And you're seated at cramped tables emblematic of its name.

Service was spotty with waitstaff constantly bumping into to one another, similar to what you'd see in an old Marx Brothers movie.

Food was okay. The kitchen needs to learn how to serve the mashed potatoes and the wild rice at least at room temperature. When my wife returned her ice-cold mashed potatoes, they were returned only somewhat warmer.

My roasted duck came out with limp instead of crispy skin. When I returned it, instead of cooking it properly, it was thrown under a broiler which dried out the meat.

I can't believe this place stays in business and apparently still "packs them in". It just shows you how NYC diners are so craving French bistro cuisine, they're will to put up with a second rate operation like this.

Charming little restaurant with old world European ambiance. Food is delicious and beautifully presented. Wait staff well-coordinated despite only 2 servers for the whole dining room.

I love small intimate restaurant spaces. La Boite en Bois fits the bill. But got very noisy. They only serve $55 pre- theater menu which I didn't expect. The coquilles St Jacques was ordinary as was the chocolate mousse. Maybe other dishes were more exciting.

While the service was attentive -- in contrast to other reviews that complained about that -- the food was only an okay version of traditional French bistro cuisine. My endive, arugula, beet salad was very good, but my monkfish with leeks was overcooked and may well have been reheated from a frozen state. My husband's calves liver was the better of our two entrees. Creme brulee was a quite disappointing dessert. For the price, it wasn't as good a value as Boulud Sud nearby.

The only complaint I had concerned the service. Our order was taken promptly and the food arrived in a timely manner. But then we lost all service. We weren’t asked about coffee or desert and we had to ask for the check. On the one hand I appreciate not having a waitperson hovering but the person never communicated with us after our food arrived. But the food was delicious and the place was warm and cozy on a wet rainy Sunday

The meal was fine. The calves liver was especially good. However, after the waiter brought the dessert menu he disappeared. Two of us wanted coffee to prolong the evening and the discussion we had, because the waiter didn't return the conversation was interrupted. Then-- maybe 20 minutes later-- the host of the evening forgot that two of us wanted coffee and asked for the bill.

The food was very good. The salad was fresh and flavorful and the roasted salmon was excellent. But it is way too crowded for my taste (even by NYC standards) and the tables are uncomfortably close together. I would only recommend it if you are already in walking distance.

A pleasant surprise! If you are on the upper West Side of NYC, it's a must for casual evening dining especially if you like French. Menu is full of great dishes but check the daily specials too.

We have been dining at this restaurant for over 30 years and have never been disappointed. The food is delicious and the portions generous. Service is usually attentive. The only situation some people may not accept is that the restaurant is tiny, and the tables are very close together. We have chosen to ignore that since everything else is positive.

Old school upper west side French Bistro rarely disappoints. Yes it's tight, yes it can be noisy, but hey it's NYC! Table had a range of dishes--all terrific, though Profiterole and creme brule desserts not particularly inspired.

Service wasn't the most attentive:
– water for refilled once mid-meal despite being empty, and only after asking
– asked for additional bread - never got it
– didn't have time for the prix fixe dessert b/c we ran out of time (despite letting water know or time constraints when we sat down) – there would have been time had the service been speedier and had the waiter paid attention to us

Despite the service, the food was very good and the wine list decent.

I often prefer to eat at La Boite en Bois and that is because they always live up to expectations. The staff is extremely courteous and helpful, and the food is consistently good. During this visit I had the Brook Trout special which was outstanding. I will be returning many times in the future.
