For a restaurant that makes ordering from a pre-theater menu mandatory, the staff were oblivious to the timing of the service. The wait staffs’ attempt to act as a team resulted in a tragedy of the commons - when every table is your responsibility, no table is your responsibility. We had to box up half our entree and all of our desserts. Half the fixed price menu options had upcharges. The attention to detail was completely off for the price point.
This is a lovely restaurant. The food, service and ambiance...delightful.
The food is excellent and, while the restaurant is a bit cramped, it works.
I love neighborhood cafes that have been around and try to frequent them as much as possible.
Unfortunately, this was such an ordinary brunch I doubt I would return.
Best think was the bread.
Sad to say but I think this place is going down hill. We had a 6:45 reservation so just as the pre-theatre crowd should be wrapping up. I do NOT recommend this time slot. It was at least 15 minutes after we sat that someone came to offer us water and that was all we were offered. We were not asked for our drink order until the 30 minute mark. The food was a bit blah. The fish way too salty and sauced and the duck a bit overdone.
Great food and drink. Gracious service.
I had a 9:45 reservation. When I arrived on time, the manager said they were done for the evening. There weren’t enough customers for him to stay open and honor my reservation. He said he had called and left me a voicemail, but I had been at the Lincoln Square movie theatre with my phone turned off. He has done this before to us. It’s infuriating.
Great neighborhood place.
We were meeting old friends for dinner and knew conversation would be an important part of our experience. We remembered from a previous dinner at La Boite that despite its small size and closely arranged tables, the restaurant remains relatively quiet. We had an early (6:45 pm) reservation, the time when there is the price fixe but no a la carte menu. The price fixe, fortunately, provides as many choices as most French restaurants with several salads as appetizers (along with traditional dishes like pate and snails) and several fish, meat, poultry, and vegetarian choices for entrees. I had the day's salad of watercress, the roast chicken, and an apple bread pudding for dessert. My husband chose the cod. Our friends chose a special seafood ravioli appetizer, and the cod, and an arugula and beet salad and bronzino. We all thought our meals delicious and attractively presented. Portions were generous. We shared a bottle of Pinot noir.
Decor is plain but comfortable. The service was attentive.
The leeks vinaigrette was perfect. The coquille St. Jacques was done in a totally new way in my experience but delicious. The Tarte Tatin melted in your mouth. Add to all this the friendly attentive service and we had a thoroughly excellent experience!
Greeted warmly. Delightful meal and service.
Food was excellent as usual. I had the veal scallopine special which was delicious. We always come here before we go to Lincoln Center and are always satisfied.
Very nice, Prix Fixe pre-theater dinner. Many selections to choose from. Cheerful staff and very good service. Really loved the sausage and lentil appetizer. We arrived when it was virtually empty and it was amazing; every seat was taken when we left.
Never disappoints. Food is always delicious and the service is friendly. The brunch offerings are varied and reasonably priced for the location (one block from Lincoln center ).
We try to have dinner here every time we are in NYC.
Outstanding, cozy, neighborhood restaurant. Well worth a visit!
The food was excellent. However, the quarters are very tight—you sit shoulder to shoulder with customers at adjacent tables. It's very noisy, so if you're looking for a quiet conversation at peak dinnertime, this restaurant is not for you. The service was attentive—but only at first. After getting menus and hearing about the evening's specials, no one bothered to ask us if we wanted a drink or a glass or bottle of wine (even though we were handed a wine list). Once we finally ordered wine by the glass and finished our respective glasses of wine, no one asked if we wanted another glass (which we did). When I got my appetizer of sausage atop lentils, I realized that I did not have a dinner knife. The disks of sausage were quite large, so I definitely needed a knife. I had to ask twice for one. In France—indeed, pretty much anywhere—this dish is served with mustard on the side. None was offered, and it took at least 10 minutes until I could get anyone's attention to request it. By the time I got the mustard, my appetizer was cold. I understand that Saturday nights are particularly busy, but, hey, it's a small restaurant. The service was decidedly lackluster and diminished our experience.
Food was excellent, as usual and service was unusually slow. But the worst is the table set up that is so close one to the other.
Couldn’t say enough good things about La Boite en Bois... if you are looking for outstanding food, in a place that is cozy and neighborhood feel, you’ve found it here!!
The wait staff did not always listen ... asked for one water with ice and one water without ice ... wait staff brought two waters BOTH with ice. Coat check attendant left and I had to wait 10 minutes for my coat. Wait staff often tried to clear when we were not totally finished. Brought one pen for check out when there were two credit card slips.
We celebrated my mother's 80th birthday at La Boite en Bois with 7 people and it was wonderful1 The food was delicious, service delightful and we could all hear each other! Great place for a group!
Quaint French Restaurant with great food, ambiance and class. Merci Beaucoup!
Absolutely wonderful French cuisine in a charming and quaint setting. Service is very efficient and friendly! We will be back often.
Excellent food and service. Everything prepared perfectly! Even the Bloody Mary’s!!
It is tight and crowded, but the foos is really superior. It's about the best Steak au Poivre I've ever had, including the ones I make myself.
The restaurant was extremely noisy and crowded. The main dishes were fair. The appetizers were very good and the homemade sorbet was delicious. Overall experience was poor. Won’t go back.
Great food. Lively crowd. Great service. Duck was fantastic as was the special veal. And the bread is superb.
We were at la Boite with a pre-opera group--had dined there before and liked it very much. There seemed to be confusion in the kitchen, or perhaps our waiter didn't hear well over the noise, but both appetizer and entrée were wrong initially - soon corrected. Salmon and ravioli were excellent, but the roast duck left a lot to be desired - tough and tasteless.
Great as always. Alain the new fellow from Romania is excellent as is Nelson and Raoul. Busy Tuesday evening and good company made it a pleasant evening as always.
The prix fixe lunch is a nice deal. This is a great place for a quiet lunch on the West Side. I appreciate the "unchanged" quality of the atmosphere as well as the food. I don't want to leave the impression that dinner isn't good too. I've enjoyed both meals there. Warning, if you can't do a few largish steps down into the restaurant, I'm not sure that there's another way in.
Both waiters who waited on us were excellent. Food is always great here - a little corner of Paris in NYC. The crepes and the scaloppini are delicious and the desserts are definitely worth the calories! Great place before theater or after. We keeping coming back and are never disappointed.
This is an intimate french restaurant that is not too stuffy with great traditional french food that is served with charm. Everything was delicious and I wish this restaurant was in my neighborhood. We shall return!
Lovely place for brunch. Menu has lots of variety, room is cozy, noise level at brunch is perfect. My omelette with ham, cheese, and leeks was quite good. A nice secret.
Classic old school New York. Tight space, amazing food.
It is crowded just like all the other reviews say. The food and service were good enough. They force you to do the pre-fix on certain nights and at certain times, but there’s no discount with the pre-fixe price. If you total the cost of each course off the a la carte menu it comes to less than the flat pre-fixe price, even the most expensive items.
I made this reservation a month or more ahead of time as I was dining with visitors from Norway who were here in NYC for a week...we arrived to find there were no tables ..our reservation was posted BUT too bad for us no seats !!!! what a horrible experience....and we were going to the Opera so time was of the essence. No one was very nice nor helpful...actually I would say rude>>>>looks lovely but I can not speak for the rest of the restaurant and I have no suggestions for future. We will not be going there EVER.
Great place for lunch - nice menu of classic French food, good service, great ambience
When it's crowded, cramped and noisy, the Box loses some charm, but food and service remain very good, except attention to the wine service. Salads are excellent, and both the shrimp/scallop and the salmon dishes were tasty and attractive, nicely portioned.
With every visit La Boite en Bois reminds me of why it is my favorite. We had a wonderful dinner that consisted of appetizers of warm sausage over lentils and smoked salmon, followed by entrees of salmon in a wine & caper sauce and lamb stew. Everything was exceptional!
Well appointed dining room, charming waiters, appealing menu, excellent food quality. Seafood crepes were delicious and my husband enjoyed the omelette. Has the attributes we were looking for in a French restaurant. Definitely on our “visit again” list.
